HI Dean,
I believe the definitive experts on the Volvo D3-110-I are Porter McRoberts, who has had significant issues with this engine, and Bill Rouse of the Amel School. Sorry Bill, I will likely be associating you with your old name for a long time. Bill worked with Porter to help overcome his issues. Mark Mueller Brass Ring A54

Re: Watermaker Fuse
Ralph Heilig
Hallo Wolfgang,
My Dessalator Duo also once had the problem after long motoring (3 days nonstop) and a hot engine room. It only run 30min and then switched the fuse. After cooling down the engine room temp (after a day or so), it worked fine again. I did not Change the fuse yet, but if you have detailed Information what fuse you installed and if it fits with the existing type (easy mounting?) I would be happy, Ralph SY Santa Isabella AMEL 54 #144

Re: D3-110I-C Wandering RPM
Ralph Heilig
Hallo Dean,
I know this Problem. My Engine (D3-110 , 1600 Hours, 2008) has the same "Problem" between 1.000 and 1.200 rpm. It has it since many years and so far no Problem. As I noticed It's exactly when it wants to open the Turbo. So I think It's at low rpm and cold engine, when the Turbo opens and closes. My experience after after 1600 hours D3: 1) I had to Change the raw water pump ( after 1.500 hours) - leaking and sea water running over the Alternator( which is stupidly mounted under the raw water pump) - so also a new Alternator 2) I had a faulty oil pressure Sensor - Error was" low oil pressure" - tested and it was only a faulty oil sensor ( this happend after 80 hours nonstop motoring on flat see - 4 days nonstop - Maybe the sensor stuck due to this) Since my Engine is 2008 - there are differne oil sensors - the Electric Connection of the "actual" D3 oil sensor does no more fit-I found one on eBay that fitted (Part Nr. 863169). Other Problems not regarding the Engine: 3) 3 (!) Mastervolt Mastercharger - 2 x 40AMP, 1 x 100 AMP - every two year one dies.... 4) Replacement of the Freshwater Pump (after 8 year) due to pressure leaking - Discussed with AMEL- they said the pump is no more avaliable and I should go for a Jabsco (V-Flow). Now working since one year without problem- mounting was easy. 5) Cooling Unit of the Refrigerator (after 9 years) - expensive repair 2.200 Euro.. 6) Bilge Pump no more pumping - also after 9 years - Easy repair with the Marina ZZ Repair Kit (Setback Flap) 7) Climma Display LED - I had to replace 2 LED Display Chips ( 5€ one ) - The whole Display would cost About 200 - 300 Euro - but my Display just lost one or two Segments on the 7-segment Display... 8) The Hydaulic Gangway never worked perfect. somtimes I have to press x times the remote an shake the Gangway manually to get it working- Problem since day 1.... 9) Mainfurler Gearbox - oil leaking - yet not fixed… Greetings from Sardegna, Ralph SY Santa Isabella AMEL 54 #144

Re: Engine room ventilator
Mike Longcor (SV Trilogy)
Hi everyone,
While on the topic... Our engine room has no 220V blower, something that has bothered me for a while and often prompts me to open the engine room cover or turn on the DC powered blowers during longer generator runs... not a great set up. Just curious what brands, styles, CFM ratings, etc. have worked well for others to ventilate the generator. And upstream of the main engine exhaust blower is the preferred installation? We plan to install something when we get to Panama City next month. Thanks, Mike & Hannah SV Trilogy SM#23 San Blas, Panama

Thanks Olivier For info, the galley extractor uses a Plastimo 16275 (dated 2008, so probably installed by the yard). It’s rated 2A, 150m^3/h (88 cfm) so quite a bit less than the engine room blower (150 cfm). I did hope for some redundancy there and might decide to implement it. Best, Thomas GARULFO A54-122 Panama

However, the inlet blower is the most exposed to salty air, and it may not be wise to install the most expensive there... Bon courage. Olivier

Re: Wintering in Aegean
I kept my last boat in Leros at Partheni for three or four winters. It is a good, tidy, secure, boatyard. There are no shops nearby but the yard has a reasonable chandlery. It is walking distance to the airport with daily flights to Athens.
They can cope with quite large yachts maybe up to 80 feet. They can undertake pretty much anything work wise but I always did everything myself so I can not vouch for their workmanship personally. Nick Amelia Aml 54 019 currently ashore in La Palma Canary Islands.

I would recommend the Marina of Agios Nikolaos on Crete - if you can get a place there. We have a couple of Amel here, most afloat though.
It is one of the cheaper marinas in Greece with a lively town 100m from the marina. 1 hour to the airport of Iraklion (no direct flights during the winter, have to change in Athen). All services present. Costs for being on the hard are the same as for being afloat but the marina is always full during the winter, so you have to book quite early. Michael, SY SIONED, Maramu #148

Hello Thanks all for your feedback and link to prior discussion. Has anyone installed the alternative blower suggested (jabsco 35770-0094 continuous duty) who could share their feedback (any fuse, wire changes required) ? Any insight on why Amel didn’t go for this 24v model with a longer motor life? Thanks all for your input. Best, Thomas GARULFO A54-122 Panama city

Re: Wintering in Aegean
Hi Greg,
I'd highly recommend the Partheni Boatyard on the north end of the island of Leros. It's part of Agmar Marine which also runs the Lakki marina in the main bay. The boatyard is immediately next door to the airport - you can walk over for regular flights to Athens at €41 on Olympic Air.. They've got a 70 ton travel lift and a 55 ton crane and can easily handle your boat. The workers are highly skilled for anything you'd want. Cheers, Craig Briggs, SN68, Sangaris

Olivier explained to us a while back, this was because it would last longer (running on 12 volt) also I think less voltage variation. Sincerely, Alexandre --------------------------------------------

It’s a 24V/5.3A 250CFM jabsco (ref 35440-0010) that’s purposely powered with 12V from the engine alternator/starter battery (as per the A54 user manual) We are in Panama and we only have access to the 12V equivalent. Would that be ok? Anyone knows why Amel uses a 24V appliance with 12V? Thanks in advance Thomas GARULFO A54-122 Panama City

We wintered in D-Marin in Didim Turkey, Lesvos Greece, Kos Marina Greece and Gouvia Marina Corfu Greece . We found all of the marinas to be safe and friendly. However only Didim and Gouvia Marina had the facilities to lift us out of the water or space on the hard. Corfu is in the Ionian and not the Aegean, but it has many direct flights to many of the main European cities, especially outside the winter months.
