I replaced my hawse pipe with Schedule 80 PVC pipe 3 or 4 years ago (you can search my posts and find more detail.) Schedule 80 is a little thicker than Schedule 40 and so far it is perfect - no visible wear after - just guessing - 100 anchorings. It was not available at the usual "big box' stores like Home Depot or Lowes, but I found it at a lawn sprinkler supplier. An option might be the grey PVC electrical conduit which is easy to find and inexpensive. Frankly, I would not hesitate to use Schedule 40 - it is all pretty tough stuff and it would not be a big job to replace after a few years if it were to wear. It is totally compatible with polyester resin and fiberglass to fasten it in to your locker floor replacement panels. Craig SN68 Sangaris.

Second vote for Turtle Cove on Providenciales, Turks and Caicos!!! As Ian said, be sure to take full advantage of the free pilot boat. It is a tight narrow channel with lots of reefs. Marina is very sheltered and offers great protection.
This is a big touristy island with a lot of resorts so there are plenty of flight choices.
The marina is not much to look at but it is centrally located. Walk to grocery and tons of restaurants. Car rental on site. Napa and hardware store also within walking distance. Or, use jitneys for about $3 to anywhere on the island.
Blue Haven is really nice but I don’t think they are fully operational yet due to damage from the hurricanes.

A more reasonably priced option is Turtle Cove, also on Providenciales.
Both are well protected. You will need to get piloted in through the reef, especially for your first time. You will need car to get anywhere but there lots of services and shops.

Currently, blue haven has only been offering floating docks and without water or electricity. This is as of February 4 when I was at TCI. Instead, I stayed at Turtle Cove. It was $.55/ft daily rate and water/electricity was very reasonable. It is shallow in places so make sure they give you an appropriate slip. Definitely use their complimentary pilot service for entering. It is very circuitous and tricky. Also, you may brush bottom at low tide. I read ,2.2m at the shallowest point and that was half tide. On SM2K #422 (SV L'ORIENT) the bow locker floors have degraded and need replacement. I'm taking this on in the next two weeks and have pirated design ideas from Mark on Cream Puff, Bill Kinney and others (thanks in advance). I do have one pressing question as I finalize my materials.
I bought L'ORIENT in 2010, when she was 6 years old. The hawse pipe (galvanized steel, I believe) was already very severely corroded, which contributed to the floor damage I have now. I've faithfully adhered to the advice of folks in this group to keep my boat "an Amel", and have resisted doing anything that runs counter to that ethic from a maintenance perspective. However, in the case of the galvanized steel hawse pipe, there is the well known invocation from Einstein that only an idiot repeats an experiment and expects a different result. I'm reluctant to replace my corroded hawse pipe with an exact replica, which I imagine began failing almost immediately after the boat was built. Has anyone used any other material for this conduit with success ? With the wide variety of super-plastics available, I was curious if someone had experimented with a solution like this, and what the result was. If I'm persuaded to use galvanized steel again, I plan on- at a minimum- installing it with flanges at each terminus to enable easy replacement, as I fear this will be necessary again. Yes Gary,
It is essential that the diameter of the hole of the tool be just slightly bigger than the shaft diameter. This will make the tool sit on the slotted shaft and transmit the force created on the shaft by the pushing screw (the black one in my tool). The "Amel" tool has a very large square hole which may not sit on the slotted shaft and cause damage of the bearings or the casing.

On 05 MarHi, Hi Barry In Shelter Bay Marina Colon, Panama I was addressing this problem. I approached the yard asking for a man with a gas torch to heat it. Instead I got a big man with a big hammer and a puller. The result was a shattered housing. We were 36 hours from transiting the Canal. Fun. He then used the gas torch as I had asked and it slipped off. So in my opinion beware a big man with a big hammer. I advised everyone after this to regularly remove and lanacote this shaft and avoid this issue forever. If done regularly it slips out easily. Thanks again for all the feedback... Miles, I bought a normal car alternator and isolated the ground myself. It’s a small 30amp alternator which produces some charging at low revs. Then I put a 25 cm pulley to the shaft and a 5cm pulley on the alternator... All together the cost was less than 400.- €. Changing from a SM to a Sharki was not so easy. I don’t miss any living room space, but I do miss the storage space of the SM. Basically I carry the same equipment. I installed 600w of solar power and a Silent Wind aero generator ( which I don’t recommend, the regulator is a piece of crap) because I want to make my fresh water without any engine. I even installed a washing machine.... But I miss the SM still very much. Fair winds, Rainer

If you experience any difficulty during re-assembly just ease the tension of the outhaul line. That line, if under a great deal of tension, can cock the Anderson Winch "cap" slightly causing a small misalignment with the gearbox slotted shaft. Usually the rubber grommets that isolate the gearbox from the boom bracket allow for enough movement to allow the well lubricated outhaul shaft to be inserted very easily without having to do this. I would like to confirm that I believe that it is important to exert pressure only on the slotted shaft and shaft and not to apply pressure to the gearbox housing or, perhaps even more importantly, the aluminum bracket of the main boom to which the gearbox attaches. Both of those items are aluminum whereas the shaft and the slotted shaft are steel. When using any type of pusher/puller it is important that the pressure/counter-pressure be applied only to the steel parts involved and not to the seals, bearings, housings, or other parts lest those parts be damaged or distorted. For the same reason I recommend agains "hammering" with large hammers against the inner shaft as a method of removal.
I have found that with annual removal and re-greasing of the outhaul shaft, all that is required is either just pushing the shaft out by hand or at the max very light tapping with a hammer against the bolt that I thread into the threaded lower aspect of the shaft. In my opinion, re-greasing every 6 months is probably over doing it a bit (no harm but annual is adequate in my experience). All the best to all who own Amel boats. f Gary S. I just did a quick scan on SC's boat tax website and see what you point out, that they don't title/register USCG documented boa. I then looked at FL and it seems they may have changed their tax laws about 2011 and would, indeed, collect tax on your boat. So our situation of no sales tax, having bought the boat in FL in 1999, may no longer be the case, as Mark suggested. My suggestion would be to call the FL Sales Tax department in Tallahassee, try to get to the manager of the boat/yacht division and discuss it with him, which is what I did. Craig, SN68
