Dessalator duo 60 warning light
eric freedman
Hi Alan, Sounds similar to my problem. I had a bad hose connected to the membranes. It looked fine outside but partially collapsed on the inside. That could be your problem. I basically rebuilt everything and the last thing that I did not replace or rebuild was the 2 hoses on the hp pump.
Does your water quality sensor actually work? On many older Super Maramu’s Dessalator supplied a water quality sensor but it was not connected to the circuitry, do you know if you water quality sensor is actually working? On the older Super Maramu’s the green light was connected to a timer circuit and in about 2 minutes the green light went on regardless of the quality of the water—just an aside.
Just as an aside, if I recall correctly you are supposed to disconnect the output water from a new set of membranes and hook the output to a hose and run it into the bilge. You should run the watermaker for 20-30 minutes to flush out the sanitizing solution. That was from the USA Dessalator rep. Fair Winds Eric Kimberlite Amel Super Maramu #376

HI, If I understand you correctly you disconnected both hoses from the membranes and the unit still went to the red alarm position. I assume you had no low pressure showing on the gauge, is that correct? Or do you have low pressure in the green but the alarm light is on . With the hoses disconnected from the membranes did water come out of either hose?
I went through the entire system last system with a problem it even stumped the USA Desalator rep. I do have the 160, however, I might be able to help if you would reply. Fair Winds Eric Kimberlite Amel Super Maramu #376

We turned the knob increasing the pressure slowly. We were just in the green and we had product water start to flow, however we had looked away from the gauge when everything stopped and the warning light came on. We can fresh water flush and water flows thru and we have 10 liters per hour on the flow meter. Dessalator duo 60 warning light
Alan Grayson
Hi All, I started my water maker for the first time and I have a problem.
i put new membranes in and flushed it with fresh water for about 15 mins. I ran sea water thru it for about 5mins then started to slowly increase the pressure while checking for leaks. Once the needle was in the green it started producing product water but after about 1 min the warning light came on and now nothing runs. I was using the 24v side. I released the pressure knob and even unhooked the pressure lines then tried again. The red warning light came straight on. I reset the 24V breaker in the engine bay and checked the 2 fuses in the control box in the lazarette. I then tried the 220v side and had the same result. does anyone have any ideas? Re: Med Berth
Steve, I assume that you want in-the-water berth. If Sicily is OK for you, there are 2 marinas that have 7 months (October to end April) "winter berths" for less than 2,000 Euros. The 4 months prior to October are higher. I prefer di Ragusa below because the marina has several freshwater springs, which reduces the number of barnacles. They are: Marina di Cala del Sole Corso Argentina, snc , 97027 Licata (ag) , Sicily, Italy Tel:+39 0922 183 7137 Fax:+39 0922 183 7138 ,VHF Channel 74 (24 hrs) Porto Turistico Marina di Ragusa Via Livorno 28 , 97010 Marina di Ragusa , Sicily,Italy Tel: +39 0932 230301 Fax:+39 0932 239466 ,VHF Channel 74 If you are interested in more information on these two marinas, or other places go to https://www.noonsite.com/Countries If I can be of any other help, let me know.

James,
I think it would be a good idea to avoid the Venezuelan islands. Although we did meet a couple in Bonaire who had stopped there without incident. Our insurance would not cover us for anything Venezuelan.

Giorgio - Thank you so much for the info! I will definitely contact Daniella. I have heard that there is some concern of piracy / theft when sailing between Trinidad and Grenada or near the Venezuela coast in that region. I believe that air and sea travel has been suspended on the border of Trinidad and Venezuela based on the UK.gov website..

Danny and Yvonne SIMMS
Hi again Pat, just an extension to my previous to emphasize to value of following the wind. On one voyage from New Zealand to Fiji, around 1200 miles we set off in wind just aft of the beam. We set big headsail, main, mizzen and mizzen staysail and put the auto helm on wind steer. The wind varied to port around 20 degrees and the auto helm followed, about 24 hours later it varied 20 degrees back to starboard for about 24 hours and so it was all the way. We never adjusted sheets the whole way. wind varied from 8 to 20 knots and we averaged 200 miles a day. Now that I call a dream run. But the dream came from going with the wind rather than holding the rhumb line. If we had followed the rhumb line we would have been adjusting and changing sails all the way. Hi James, I left for the second year my Amel Sharki from Peake Shipyard in Chaguaramas Bay Trinidad. The shipyard works like a Swiss watch and all the staff is very helpful. The prices compared to the various marinas on the islands are much lower and the service it's great. They have a shipchandler inside and various technicians capable of performing any kind of work. In addition, Trinidad is practically at the lower end of the hurricane belt and is an event that occurred 3 or 4 times in a century. In this moment there are 4 Amel in the yard. Write an email to Daniella, the person responsible for the reservations and get a quote for your boat. The address is: reservations@... If you want more info I am at your disposal. Good luck. Re: Long term storage options in southern Caribbean
Grenada is not impacted by the Venezuela instability, neither are the ABC’s.
The passage from Grenada to Trinidad and Tobago has become a little dodgy. The Coast Guard is asking for float plans of vessels making the passage so they can keep an eye on them. When passage making to the ABCs it is best to give Venezuela a wide berth by departing from a higher island. We departed Guadeloupe for Bonaire. You will also have better winds with this angle.
Grenada offers affordable haul outs as does Curacao Marine in the ABCs. Rates for work done on these islands are equivalent to USA prices. You will not really see lower rates unless you are willing to go to Trinidad & Tobago, Colombia or Central America.
With best regards,
Mark

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Genoa sheet cars
Hi Alan,
On our SN the eye bolt has a nut and washer on the end. It was difficult to find as it was buried under some hull lining which we had to cut open. We discovered it because the eye bolt just kept turning and not coming out - we were able to get a socket on it after cutting the lining open. Craig SN68 Sangaris

I'd like to ask the forum for recommendations on safe and affordable locations for storing our boat for 3 - 4 months.
Martinique is a great option, but there are perhaps better locations for getting work manual labor type jobs done at more affordable rates. Grenada seems to be historically a popular place, but I wonder about the current situation with more instability in nearby Venezuela. Any advice or recommendations is greatly appreciated! Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Genoa sheet cars
Hi Allan Attached is a cross section of the rub rail showing genoa track machine screwed to mild steel backer plate that has given some rust problems to some Amelians. On Aletes, age 15 or so, turning off the eye bolt at the forward end of the track to replace the genoa car resulted in shearing off the bolt. We had to drill it out (cobalt drill bit) and re-tap the hole for a new bolt. We also had to move the stanchion out of the way as Danny relates. Good luck! Mike Ondra Aletes SM#240

Hi Allan, yes that eye bolt comes out. I approached it with trepidation but it came free quite easily. Take care it doesnt wring off. This still doesnt give enough room to get the car off. I removed the screws from the staunchon base and pushed it sideways. Some others have cut the sides off the track to get it off. Regards Danny SM 299 Ocean Pearl

Hi Mark, If you will be in Colombia for a bit more, It is a phenomenal place to have your upholstery or curtains replaced. In Colombia it is normal to negotiate the price for work etc. Bear in mind that the salary for a worker for 50+ hours a week is 700,000 pesos or about 230 Us dollars for an entire month. A few years ago, I burned out the furling motor. I ordered a new one from Amel and keep the old one to repair one day. I just had it repaired in Colombia at an electric motor shop (US$60 – Gotta love Colombia). Here are the pictures of the original. Perhaps this will help.

Thx Bill. I have done so, just awaiting response. I know the gearbox model/specs and have ordered it from the distributor in the US. Last time I communicated with Maude they did not have any stock. I'm really looking for the RPM and HP/KW and can match to the using dimensions I have from the Bonfiglioli catalog. I think it must be a fairly standard electric motor otherwise it would likely be sold together with the gearbox. But maybe I am wrong about this. S/V Loca Lola II SM153 Exumas, Bahamas
