Hi Duane, I had a very good time in La Bahia de Luperon in 2014. Officials were coming aboard but they were very friendly and professional. Compared to the rest of the Caribbean it’s rather cheap and you can buy fresh veggies which are locally grown and not imported from the US. Also a good place to get Trojan Batteries at a very low price. For me the DomRep was one of the best places in the Caribbean, but I do speak Spanish.... Fair winds Rainer Huthmacher

night's Amel Rally/Mango Bay dinner! Many thanks to Bill, Mango Bay & all of the sponsors who put on an incredible feast & handed out some wonderful gifts. I am only sorry that I did not get to meet everyone there. Tracie & I would like to make a trip to the L'Habitation Clement grounds in the next few days if any of you are interested in sharing a car with us. I think is was a huge success & would think this is the truly the 'First' of many Amel Rally gatherings. And it aint over yet! SM Chain Counter
Thomas Peacock
I am in the process of trying to fix our chain counter, which has not worked since we purchased the boat several years ago.
Troubleshooting thus far points to a probable short in the sensor up by the windlass. I have purchased a nearly identical new sensor; the only difference is the old sensor is "normally closed", while the new sensor is "normally open". Anyone have any thoughts on whether the different open/closed setting will make a difference? Thanks as always to all on this invaluable forum. Re: Anchor Chain Size and Length
On my A50, Amel is installing 100m of 10mm G4 chain. I plan to splice 30m of 8-plait rode at the end of it, for the deeper anchorages, or stronger blows. The factory recommended the 35kg Ultra anchor, but I will have the Ultra 45kg. I know it's on the heavier side, but I like to sleep well at night.

Re: Insurance update US East Coast & Bahamas- Pantaenius US
Craig,
I think the remarkable part of the Pantaenius requirements is the fact, in my opinion, it would be impossible to meet the requirements anywhere in the Carib. When I first read these changes as a part of our policy, I inquired as to where in the Carib they felt I could meet the requirements and wondered if they had specific boat yards in mind when they wrote the specs. I never heard back from them regarding this. It would seem logical to me if they are to have such specific regulations in terms of meeting the policy requirements they would have at least a couple of places in mind where they had done some reconnaissance to help their members comply. But, I guess not.
We have heard good things about Geico, however they coverage geography is limited. Look into Novamar. Novamar uses Geico as an underwriter, along with other big names. They are A-rated. They have an easy to read policy, reasonable rates and none of the stupidity of Pantaenius. Here is a broker who can help with a quote (or you can get one online):

Given this topic is about ways to keep your boat further south, this is probably irrelevant, but I feel compelled to add it: I had BoatUS coverage on my old boat and dropped it when they switched to Geico as the underwriter. I keep my boat in the water year-round in Boston (when not cruising) and Geico requires the use of a bubbler to receive ice and freezing coverage, even if bubblers are not normal practice in your location (it's not in my marina). I think there were a couple other caveats as well, so read the policy carefully. For now, I'm still happy with my Pantaenius America coverage, but we'll see what happens when it renews. Insurance update US East Coast & Bahamas- Pantaenius US
Some recent posts discussed Pantaenius coverage for east US and Bahamas with respect to the hurricane season - here's an update (spoiler alert: no change).
We just received offers for renewing our Pantaenius policy as of April 30, 2019: Option 1: $2,287 premium for $185K agreed value with $5K deductible, $500K Indemnity; boat North of 30.5°N (Florida) from July 15 to Nov 15; Option 2: $5,192 for same coverage; boat North of 21.0° N (Includes Bahamas), If south of 30.5 between July 15 and Nov 15, that is, in Florida or the Bahamas, a Named Tropical Storm (NTS) deductible applies of $37,000 and you must comply with their NTS Plan of 1. being hauled with unitized cradle or hurricane pit with 5000 pound blocks etc.,or 2., stored inside a Cat 4 hurricane building or 3.between fixed concrete piers or 4. being moved out of the way of the NTS. No coverage if the NTS Plan is not followed. Noteworthy is that Lighting damage now has a deductible of 5% of Hull Value if, under Option 1, in Florida from June 1 to July 14 or Nov 1 to 30, or, under Option 2, from June 1 to Nov 30. Bottom line, if you want year around coverage for Florida and/or the Bahamas, Pantaenius USA's rates are breathtaking. I'm shopping and have found Geico (Boat US) offers a competitively priced product. Cheers, Craig SN68 SANGARIS, Delray Beach, FL

Hi Duane and Peggy. I can echo Marko CREAMPUFF’S sentiments. I have been to the DR several times. I could hardly wait to leave. Other than Haiti, it is the most unpleasant place in the Caribbean from my experience. Officials are quick to let you know you are at their mercy and that is unsettling. I can only imagine what their legal system and eventual prisons are like. The previous owner of Marks boat took over a failed building project for a resort and regretted it every day there-after. You won’t like it there.

Duane,
We sailed from T&C to PR without stopping at the DR. The DR government officials are corrupt, the smelly bays are polluted and the islands offer nothing that cannot be found elsewhere in the Carib. Others will most likely disagree but my point is, if you do skip it, don’t feel bad about having to.

Re: Any news about the 3D printed Toe pulley (headsail)
Mark McGovern
Jose,
My machinist just finished making another batch of the jib car pulleys from 316L Stainless Steel: The design is pretty much identical to the original cast aluminum pulleys but we make them out of 316L Stainless Steel to avoid the corrosion issues the aluminum ones suffer from. I sell them for US$190 for each complete pulley so $380 for a set of two (2) pulleys. Contact me at mfmcgovern at gmail dot com if you are interested in purchasing them. Out of curiosity I got a quote for getting them made using Direct Metal Laser Sintering process (3D Printing) out of the same 316L Stainless Steel material. The quote was around US$1776 per pulley or US$3552 for a set of two pulleys: -- Mark McGovern SM #440 Cara Deale, MD USA

Dear Eric,
The prop shaft bushing for the AMEL 55 is not out of stainless steel. Except for the first AMEL 55 boats, the prop shaft bushings are different (the diameter is not the same) and the material is bronze or chromed.
In short, the new type of prop shaft bushing for the AMEL 55 will not fit the shaft of your Super Maramu.
Feel free to take contact with me for any further details.

Re: Fuel Polishing
My only experience with my boat and I have also discuss used with several other cruisers who have had similar problems is that you can get some water and microorganisms that form gelatenois blobs at the bottom of the tank. They generally behave and stay put until you are in rough seas with low fuel level in the tank. Then the sloshing breaks them loose. I did not experience any clogging as I saw the first signs of junk in the racor filters. The fuel tank had only about 100 liters in it so when I opened the inspection ports I could see the globs on the bottom of the tank. I attached a 3 meter length of fuel hose to the fuel dip stick with a couple zip ties and then using a 4 liter fluid extractor I sucked each of the remaining blobs of gunk out. Less than $100 invested. I can tell you that if you have 200 liters in your tank you will probably not be able to see the bottom, but a fellow cruiser just borrowed my rig last month an successfully sucked about 20liters of dirty fuel off the bottom of his full tank just by sweeping across the bottom. He stopped when the fuel coming out became clean. Daniel Carlson, Sm#387, sv BeBe

I think that nowadays they can be printed in stainless steel at a reasonable price, particularly if there are enough parts made. I will be in the market for two units and be willing to put whoever has made mechanical drawings with the printing shop.

Re: Anchor Chain Size and Length
Danny and Yvonne SIMMS
Hi Jose, Chain size. May be either 10 mm or 3/8 inch gypsy. You need to check. Good idea to take the gypsy with you when you go to buy the chain. Check for wear on the gypsy, that may be why it skips although even right size and good condition will skip under high loading. We have 100 m of chain and a further 70 m of heavy nylon anchor rode (rope) spliced to the chain. Very important that the rode never makes contact with coral as it would cut. I found this to be a good combination. I spliced it through two links to get it to fit and did a nice tight splice so it would go down the hawse pipe. The gypsy will grip the rode if you find a way to apply a little pressure to the rode onto the gypsy. Regards Danny SM 299 Ocean Pearl

Anchor Chain Size and Length
Jose Venegas
I am getting ready to replace my current anchor chain. The chain that was installed by the yard 7 years ago tends to jump when enough force is made by the windlass, which I imagine is because is not the exact size for the original windlass on Ipanema.
First question: Do you know what size chain should be used? I am still going to buy a sample before getting the full length to make sure it fits well, but I may save time and money if I try the proper one first. A second question: how long (meters or feet) of chain are recommended for long distance cruising. I find that 100 meter is too short and restricts the anchorages I can use.
