Just curious if anyone has had any claims experience with Novamar? How well do they follow-up and how quickly do they pay?

Hi Duane -. I am wondering what deductible you have for your policy. I'm also considering Novamar. Thanks. James Soteria 347 Culebra

Re: Anchor Chain Size and Length
Thank you Jean-Pierre.
I spent 3 seasons in the S. Pacific with my previous boat, Lagoon 450. I used NZ for off season, which was ideal. I had an unforgettable time... I plan to go again with my A50. I found catamarans to be miserable, but safe, in rough ocean. They are best on anchor. I also went through some of the strongest storms I've ever experienced. I had a 35 kg Manson Supreme for my 450 and I only dragged once in Opua because of the river mud bottom. So, I'm hoping that the 45kg Ultra will be at least comparable. The 450 has much more windage .I'm glad you like your Ultra. I've read good things about them. Enjoy the S. Pacific. It's amazing there. Theo Paloma 2019 A50 #18

Re: SM Chain Counter
Our original Amel chain counter had always worked perfect till we arrived in the Caribbean. I tried everything to fix it myself to no avail then asked Amel here in Martinique who put me onto Pouchon Electronics at Le Marin marina who are the only shop in the Caribbean to hold the replacement sensors. 280 euros and 20mins job by them and our Amel chain counter is like new again. We also replaced our old chain here with 110m of new top grade French manufactured 10mm P30 chain for just 750 Euro. As others commented here this is avai5 at Le Ship Chanderly at Le Marin which seems like the best place by far for Amel bits and pieces. Colin & Lauren SV Island Pearl II #332 St Anne's anchorage

We've been to Samana twice and also Luperon. It definitely feels like a police state and this is the last place in the Caribbean I would want to have a problem with customs. The Army, Navy, immigration, and others inspected and asked/demanded bribes. The marina in samana is quite nice but we only went there out of logistical necessity......

Re: SM Chain Counter

Hi Tom, I don't know how the stock chain counter works, but I was able to fix the one on our boat (I don't think it's original) by duct taping a magnet to the windlass. I'm unsure if the original magnet fell off or just lost its magnetism, there's just a tiny rusty insert where it should be. The sensor was fine. What makes you think there is a short in your sensor? If you're just looking at the output of the sensor with a voltmeter while the windlass is running, it's possible the pulse is happening too fast for the meter to react. You might want to try using an oscilloscope if you haven't already. I think it's unlikely your new sensor will hurt anything, since it will be providing the same signals as the existing one -- just with opposite duty cycle. You may find that it works perfectly if the display is edge-triggered rather than level-triggered, as I suspect it is. if you do find you need to invert the signal, it should be possible by adding a relay. The exact way to wire it up will depend on specifics of your system. Good luck, Ryan and Kelly

It really was a great time with lots of things provided by the sponsors. All of the sponsors want to do it again with the same or increased investment. Anchors etc
I like the look of the Ultra and do not doubt it is a superb anchor but .....,,££$$$.....it is an expensive bit of kit that I would not want to lose. The 45 kg retails for about £3000 in the UK. Maybe could knock off the VAT but still...

Hello Theo, I’ve had a ULTRA since 2015. It has yet to drag if set properly. It is the 35 KG version. I’ve gone from Turkey to New Zealand in the meantime ; it’s a good looking piece of SS sitting on your bow. Enjoy your boat! Jean-Pierre Germain, SY Eleuthera, SM 007, NZ.

Hi Kent, Here is the blurb from Howes—I use Meaner power cleaner. I have not noticed the mustache on my port side after using this and changing my injectors. Fair Winds Eric Kimberlite Amel Super Maramu #376
At Howes we understand the science and importance of year round lubricity and protection and our Meaner Power Kleaner is the proof. Safely eliminating water and removing the environment that creates bacteria, Meaner Power Kleaner contains no alcohol or harmful solvents and eliminates injector deposits. The end result is a performance enhancing product that protects your engine and boosts MPGs…guaranteed

Re: Fuel polishing
Hi Eric,
Yes, I use Howes and Biobor Jr. I didn’t think Howes did anything to prevent or kill microorganisms. I haven’t been able to confirm any increase in fuel efficiency with Howes, but I do think my exhaust ”mustache” on the port hull isn’t quite as bad as it used to be. What I’ve been doing seems to be working well, but if I start finding dirty fuel when I get to the Pacific, I may add a system like you have on Kimberlite. Kent SM 243 Kristy

Re: Anchor Chain Size and Length
Thank you!
I hope the Ultra works as good as it looks. I wasn't looking for a SS anchor but Amel told me that anchors with bars wouldn't fit the A50. So, we'll see... I've used Manson Supreme and Rocna on previous boats and I was very pleased by them.

I had no problem. I read that there is a government law that when you check in a Marina, only 2 officials are allowed to board your boat. Only 2 did, they did not search the boat, was more to seat down and fill up the paperworks. One of the official was amused by a stuff monkey I had. The “Commandante” made his speech that he accepts donations, etc. I said thanks and didn’t give anything. Several weeks later when I checked out, 3 (instead of the 2 allowed came) but no issue either. I heard from many other sailors that did not check in a marina their horror stories… so I highly recommend checking in a Marina… Work done by the local at first was good (cleaning the stainless), but as they did more work the prices increased and the quality decreased… I remember the last job was an offer to clean the water line, I don’t remember the amount they ask, but it was insane and I said I would do it on other boats being paid for less. Re: Fuel polishing

Hi Kent,
Did you ever try Howes fuel treatment instead of Biobor? https://petroleumservicecompany.com/howes-meaner-power-kleaner-12-32-ounce-case/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIx8LAkdHJ4QIViYrICh1MjQOZEAQYASABEgJr8fD_BwE. This product is guaranteed to give you 10% better fuel economy, will not allow the diesel to gel, and absorbs the water so it will be burned with the fuel, in addition to dissolving the bacteria in the tank. It is used by large fuel depots to store fuel. I thanks to PenAzen) had Amel install a 2 way valve in the fuel fill, The fuel goes to a pump, then through a racor truck fuel filter The filter itself is about 12 inches high and 6 inches in diameter. It then goes into the tank. I have never had any fuel problems and the fuel tank is spotless. I use a 2 micron fuel filter in the dual racor fuel filter before it goes into the engine fuel filters. I believe the problem with using Biobor is that it kills the bacteria and the dead bacteria accumulates and sits on the bottom of the tank. Most boats have a dip tube for the fuel so sludge on the tank bottom is normally no problem. Our tanks draw the fuel from the bottom so any crud in the tank goes directly to the Racor filters. I have close to 7000 hours on my yanmar with no problems so far, Fingers crossed. I would suggest you try it. You can get it at most auto supply stores. I bottle is good for 350 gallons. If you use it, the first time, I would double the recommended quantity. Fair Winds Eric Kimberlite Amel Super Maramu #376 -=-=-=-=-=-=-
