Re: VP TMD 22P

Hi

I have also a Perkins M80T which is equivalent to the TMD22 A. For me it is not clear if I can order filter for oil and fuel from Perkins or from Volvo. Perkins is much cheaper. Till now I didn't have any problems. I have ordered always from the big online broker parts4engine from UK. If I need to order for Volvo, then I have to order from the broker from the Netherlands which is at the moment much more expensive.
Does anybody know which is best for what?

Thanks to all for any answer or suggestions which are highly apreciated.

Here’s what I got from Maud.

Dear Mike,

Sorry for my late confirmation. I was on vacation last week. Please find here attached 2 photos of the needed black support for your LEROY SOMER gearbox.

The price is 48.56 euros/ each without taxes and without transport.

Let me know the needed quantity and delivery address + phone and I will arrange shipment as soon as possible.

With my kindest regards,

My Superwind does not create any noises or vibrations.  It is attached to the mizzen mast via a decoupling device that does not transmit vibrations.   It is expensive, though.

A loose spade connection under AMEL dash board near the switch. Everything else is fine.

I guess the rocking & rolling yday caused this but I believe this connection was handled by Willie last year when they put in the new dash board.

Anyhow – all good to go for leaving tomorrow morning to VAUATU.

Hi Bill,

Willie on board. Switch is good.

I didn’t know that next to the white Velcro panel where there are 2 heat breakers when you open the closet door there is at the top a wooden panel which is held by 1 screw. When removing it gives access to 1 main furler (brake) relay and 2 solenoids. See pic.

Willie is testing now.

I will have it checked by Willie this morning. From everything it sounds the bushes might be likely the issue as it furls in no problem; when the motor released from the furler we can hand crank easily.

Teun,

Furling solenoid is behind the Velcro'd panel just inside the forward watertight door near the ceiling, or behind the Velcro'd panel in the forward port side berth.  I don't think this is the problem, but Willie should check it and the helm mounted toggle switch.

First check the simple things:

I assume you are having an issue with the furling motor/gearbox and not the outhaul motor/gearbox.

Loosen the 4 bolts on the furling motor/gearbox, lower the unit enough to disengage the main foil fr the motor/gearbox, then test the manual furler with a winch handle. If it works, you've eliminated a sail jam. Next try the furler motor while disconnected. Take a rubber mallet a rap the gearbox sharply. If either of these work, call Willie and tell him you probably need new brushes in the motor. You may have spares... check my Amel Book for changing brushes.

It is possible that the large solenoid has failed, but I have yet to actually see this happen.

OK, this is what I was talking about. This is where the furling motor wire connects. The solenoid allows for reverse polarity, as well. Reversing the polarity causes the reversing of motor rotation.

Hi Teun,

I am sure you will enjoy Vanuatu. Tana volcano is amazing, you can stand above the crater and watch it blow. Wow. Then as you go North you will find many places of great interest.

I knew of these 2 boxes but was not aware they were the solenoids; I thought they were resistance breakers.

I will have it checked by Willie this morning. From everything it sounds the bushes might be likely the issue as it furls in no problem; when the motor released from the furler we can hand crank easily.

Will let you know the outcome today.

Teun,

Furling solenoid is behind the Velcro'd panel just inside the forward watertight door near the ceiling, or behind the Velcro'd panel in the forward port side berth.  I don't think this is the problem, but Willie should check it and the helm mounted toggle switch.

BTW

Behind the white velcroed panel in the guest cabin on the A54 mentioned earlier are 2 overload protectors.

When I got the boat the main outhaul had a problem and Bill & I decided to replace the complete motor & gear box but noticed that this overload had heated before as there were black heating marks around the area on the bulkhead. Thierry/AMEL sent a new unit jointly with the motor & gear box. This new unit (75 AMP) didn’t work and we had to use the 100 Amp MAXI FUSE override (which was zip tied to the wires) to get the outhaul to work. Thierry/AMEL sent a new unit (also 75 Amp) and we installed today and AGAIN it didn’t work and we are back to using the 100 Amp MAXI FUSE.

Clearly there is a problem with these overload protectors as they don’t work as they should. It can NOT be that the outhaul/gearbox needs to be cleaned, greased & serviced as it is brand-new and it says no grease & service needed.

Hi Ian,

Appreciate your input; especially reminded me of the old cloth. Bill ROUSE has seen the carnage on deck when a local “mechanic” removed the outhaul motor and gear box. It took me months to get the stains out and even then I still had spots which finally disappeared when professionals polished everything above the waterline.

try the mallet Bill suggested.

Mine played up in Antigua last year.
If someone stands near the solenoids, you will hear them click if they are working. If they are power is going to the motor. My motor responded with a gentle tap. The problem was the brushes sticking in their guides because of carbon dust. A good clean sorted it out. But make sure you surround the motor with an old cloth. Carbon dust and a bit of water make a nice mess if the deck.

Hi Arno,

Indeed it seems both of us have spent/are spending a lot of time, energy and money to get our boats back in shape.

There are two relays/solenoids behind the white panel near the ceiling next to the closet in the guest cabin. One of them is for the main outhaul (we had to renew that one last year) and the other one I guess is for the main furler.

I really think it is either the switch (we think it is good); the relay/solenoid or the bushes as: A) I can furl in with the motor and B) the furler itself can be hand cranked. BTW you need a short handle o'wise you will not be able to make a full turn due to the outhaul motor cover.

I should have tested all furlers b4 leaving port; but everything was working perfect 7 days ago coming back from ISLE des PINS. I guess another lesson learned.

How are you getting along with LUNA?

Best Regards Teun

Hi Teun,

Your boat is really keeping you busy, not?

For your problem I think you have two possibilities. A relative good one and a bad one.

The good one is that the relay is not working for whatever reason. I’m guessing the relays are near to the circuit breakers in the guest cabin (see attached circuit diagram).

The second possibility is that there is so much play on the gears inside the gearbox of the furling motor that they lock-up causing the motor to stall.

My first guess would be it is the first problem, maybe caused by a broken wire or contact corrosion.

Regards,

Arno Luijten

Bill,

I knew of these 2 boxes but was not aware they were the solenoids; I thought they were resistance breakers.

I will have it checked by Willie this morning. From everything it sounds the bushes might be likely the issue as it furls in no problem; when the motor released from the furler we can hand crank easily.

Will let you know the outcome today.

Thanks for the help.

Best Regards Teun

Teun,

Furling solenoid is behind the Velcro'd panel just inside the forward watertight door near the ceiling, or behind the Velcro'd panel in the forward port side berth.  I don't think this is the problem, but Willie should check it and the helm mounted toggle switch.

Hi Bill,

Correct – furling motor/gearbox.

Did loosen as you described below; can furl & unfurl manually - no sail jam.

Did NOT rap the gearbox; it is night now; will do tomorrow.

Willie is coming on board 2nd thing tomorrow morning; was holiday here today.

Brushes motor – didn’t think about those. l did study your AMEL bible but missed that.

Where is the solenoid – I tried to find in the manual as well as your “A B”. As this is similar problem I had 2 weeks ago with the windlass (not down but luckily did go up) which was the solenoid I have been trying to locate.

Thanks for the help.

Get back to me.

Was on my way to TANNA VANUATU and can NOT unfurl the main sail. It will furl but NOT unfurl.
The switch in the cockpit is good.   Any suggestions?

Have returned to NOUMEA as I need to have this working before crossing to VANUATU

Thanks.

Thanks Arno,
I switched wires on the relays to one of the working motors and got the same symptoms. I am going to remove the motor to take it apart and inspect gears and brushes. Fortunately I found a whole bag of replacement brushes in the piles and piles of spare parts that came with the boat. If I need to there is a local company that rebuilds electric motors at a reasonable price.
