I  might be totally wrong in the below description, then enlighten me about charging, but both Swi-Tec and Watt & Sea, are programmed to charge batteries and not to feed the boats consumption, which has the strange consequence, that even when you consume a lot of power during sailing the hydro-generator only produce so much current as the batteries would take even if you where not consuming any energy. Don't ask me how it works but I talked with an owner of a Watt &Sea and he explained the issue for me but I can't repet the info, He was in contact with Watt & Sea who confirmed, they gave him info so he could reprogram his regulator, (out of my competence).

Both his experience and mine is they do not give as much as expected, when looking at the amp meter the current varies a lot jumping often between 5-8 Amps at speed around 6-7 knots  but seldom above 10 amps even at speed exceeding 8 kn.

Speed reductions is negligible.
but not the issue of cleaning the propeller from sea weed

Mounting; as I have a stern platform it was rather straight forward but do not see that it should be more difficult without the platform, I attache a few photos om my installation.
If someone is interested I would consider selling our Swi-Tec hydro-generator,, used less than 14 days

OK Paul, I thought you had attached a block at the outer end in one of the notched hook cutouts or to the tang the topping lift is attached to. Thats what I did. (notched cutouts) Since things always go wrong at the worst possible time the saving in time by not removing the endless cord may be useful. However if the length of time it was to be in place is significant it is a neater solution. I did the process early in my ownership before I discovered how often brushes worn or sticking caused the motor to malfunction, and how quick and simple it is to deal with. In any event mine was in place breifly.

Hi, I went to our local hardware store Mitre 10 in Kaitaia (pop 5000) in the far north of New Zealand and off the shelf got a faucet identical in every respect to the original. Mine had the pull out function. Incredible I thought, instaled in France year 2000. replaced with identical from Kaitaia year 2016.

Hi Will,

I’ve spent a couple of nights sleeping in the aft cabin of a Maramu, I’m 6 feet tall and found it quite comfortable. I’m assuming the Santorin dimensions are comparable but hopefully someone can verify this?

I’ve also heard of a few owners who have customised the aft cabin layout to incorporate a larger bed, so I’m sure there are ways to squeeze in taller owners :o)

Have you considered a Maramu? There are more on the market and they will often be lower in price than Santorin’s.

Aesthetically I prefer the sugar scoop rear of the Santorin but beyond this I think they are quite similar - anyone care to chime in with any other major differences between the two models?

Not sure if you have looked around a Super Maramu? If your budget can stretch, the additional space will be most welcome if you plan to have guests on board on a regular basis. If you plan to sail solo or as a couple, then the Santorin, Maramu or even the Sharki would be perfect.

Nice system Paul. Why did you not use the main mast winch to haul the sail instead of the lead back to the cockpit? Or maybe it’s better if it is just the outhaul that has stopped working then you can reach the inhaul switch....,,,

Hi Paul and Ellen. I like Pauls set up in that it is totally adjustable from the cockpit, perfect. I can add a level of simplicity. You do not need to remove the endless Amel outhaul line. Just remove the locating bolt in the top of the front wheel and it will spin free of the motor.

If the depth sounder transducer is original, it is old enough to need replacing because it is beyond its average life. I have seen these act up, before eventually failing completely. Send me an X-Ray image I will will diagnose further. 😀😀

I don't remember all the details but some years ago we met another Santorin owner in the Med who had extended the aft berth with a "foot-well" into the aft locker area. I recall he was a cabinet maker and it was a good looking "Amel-like" job that did not seem to compromise anything structural and retained the water-tight aft lazarette, albeit making that a bit smaller.

We modified ours at one point with a filler piece of plywood and a couple of supports that gave us athwartship sleeping.  That gave a very long berth that was comfy in a roll. I had engineered it to be changeable at will so now we have three possible layouts: 1. Two separate berths; 2. one single to starboard and a double to port; and 3. an extra long, extra wide athwartship "king" size berth.

Lotsa ways to skin a cat.

The owners of Cayenne, Hannes and Sabine (from Austria) are both tall and I don't ever remember hearing them complain about the aft cabin headroom. Their boat is now in Australia and they are home in Austria for a time. I'll ask them to get in touch with you.

Hello Hajo:

My SM #335 has the depth sounder wired to the B & G Hydra 2000 computer at the nav station with orange/white wire going to terminal 30 and orange/green wire going to terminal 29.  These are solder tinned wires that fit under a clamping terminal strip.  If yours is similar you might look at those connections for any signs of oxidation or corrosion.  Perhaps treat the terminals with Corrosion X after inspecting them.  Any signs of cable chafe or other intermittency in the cabling (excessive bends etc)?  I do not believe there is a connector at the transducer but I don't recall for sure, if there is one then an inspection of the pins and sockets of such would be helpful.  Clean up those contacts if they exist.

Will,
I think you will find that every Santorin owner on the owners site will say it is the right boat for them. For us it’s been perfect.
One question though is what height are you? At 5’10” the aft double berth is just right if I was much over 6’ it would be a bit short. The forward bunks are fine, but not much good on s heavy sea.
I didn’t want a Super Maramu because they cost a lot more, I didn’t need the extra length and I was worried about the extra things to service/look after / like air con, washing machine, generator etc.
But I wouldn’t say no to one now.
Agree with the comment about the ketch rig. It’s great.
Any specific questions you have will be answered by a number of owners cruising oceans and living aboard.
