Re: Amel is going lithium
Hi Scott,
Yes, I would be interested as well. I noticed in the very extensive description of the A60 that the now incorporate a fan inside the battery compartment. I wonder what led to this. I’m considering to build my own bank using the Chinese Wilson cells. Fun fact; the (very expensive) Mastervolt Lithium batteries also use these cells but hide them in a Mastervolt box. My biggest issue with the whole Lithium story is that Lithium batteries should ideally be disconnected from the charger once they are full. The concept of “float” does not apply to Lithium batteries. Now this becomes an issue if you are long term on shore power. I know not all Amels do this but for us this is reality. The way to solve this is to toggle the charger (using a breaker relay) and keep the loads on the battery side or disconnect the batteries and keep the loads on the charger side. Both have drawbacks. The first adds lots of small cycles to the batteries. Also you need to decide when to resume recharging (by programming the BMS, the Battery Management System) The second assumes your charger can handle all the 24 volt power needs when connected to shore-power. Also you need to reconnect the batteries very fast if shore-power is interrupted (planned or unplanned) to prevent several of the 24 volt systems to suffer from power interruption (fridges don’t like that for example). Most “drop in replacement” solutions are designed without a clear explanation how they handle this problem. When building your own battery pack you can buy many different BMS systems. Most of them are designed of off-grid living (on land) and do not address this issue as it not relevant for them. So I’m curious what you all did to be “Living on Lithium”. Alex, Just row your boat, leave the motor on the mothership and use your oars. They can give you a ticket with the motor but you probably will never see them patrolling again even if you stay awhile. If you're not staying long just take the ticket and save it as a souvenir from N.Y., they will not go after you in Switzerland. Where in NY are you? If I can help with local knowledge, I live in the Hudson valley near NYC so call me. Re: Spinnaker or parasailor

Hallo Joerg and all Amelians,
I have read with much interest your description of your way of using the parasailor on your 55. I have a Santorini with my man Dietmar; we are thinking about buying a parasailor since 2 years, but it seems there are some problems using it on a Santorin. The first problem seems to be the 2 “horns” at the top of the Genoa furler: do you have it on the 55? and did you have to remove it using the parasailor? The second problem are the winches: the Santorini just has 2 winches: are they enough or we have to mount some others winches or “blocks”? Third and last doubt is: is the parasailor really manageable by just two 60andmoreyears old people? Sorry for my bad English! I hope you can understand my questions. Thanks a lot for your time. Really considering this Scott, I’d love to see a write up. Do you have the duo or the 230/50hz only dessalator? Very tempting I must say. This and a little wind generator and I think with our 3 panels we might truly be off the grid.

Regrettably the nut is not on stock at Amel, they just ordered new ones themselves but it will be September before they are back on stock. Looking at your picture you seem to have enough room to tighten the nut 1/6 or 1/3 turn. Be careful as the nut is made of nylon. A rudder gland should not leak at all. The packing material is grease saturated and should keep the water out. Use a good fitting wrench to tighten the nut and turn it slowly. Do 1/6th of a turn and first assess the result before turning it any more. If movement is extremely hard, the packing material needs to be replaced first. Amel is going lithium
Scott SV Tengah
It appears the new Amel 60 is going with 720ah of lithium batteries and as a result getting an electric oven and induction cooking.
https://www.wilkinsonmarine.com/store/p115/AMEL_60.html Thoughts? As someone who has had 450ah of lithium for about a year now, I can say it has been transformative and I'm glad Amel finally moved in that direction. The ability to run all the 220v appliances (via our 5kw inverter) on battery has been life changing, to quote the admiral. We try not to use the Eno stove now and prefer to cook electrically. It was not an easy process and I had to "guide" the marine electricians quite a bit as they are used to lead acid/agm thinking, which in many ways, doesn't apply to lithium. Some advantages we've noticed: - 20% increase in solar panel / 220v charger efficiency. There's only about 3% loss charging lithium vs. 20%+ for lead acid/agm/gel - we can run the aft cabin AC all night on battery - we can run the windlass and bow thruster with the engine off - with 200amps of 220v chargers, we run the Onan for maybe 30 minutes every few days - we can make 900 liters of water (say overnight) on battery If anyone is contemplating it, I can try to do a writeup on our setup (we changed 220v chargers, alternator charge controller, wiring) and what worked and what isn't perfect. Very glad to see Amel has incorporated it in their 60 and hopefully other boats going forward. -- Scott 2007 A54 #69 SV Tengah www.svtengah.com

Re: New York: Registration for motorized dinghy / foreign flagged sailboat
I think that if a thief ashore were to see a dinghy with T/T Vessel Name on it and took off to rob a boat (that they have no idea of the anchor location but planned to blindly hunt for it) would probably rob the first boat they come to without a dinghy attached to it. Just my 2¢
And, besides in Alex’s case, I gave him two options.

Re: Spinnaker or parasailor
Joerg Esdorn
Paul, the Parasailor is not as easy to launch as my Code Zero on a furler but it's less work than setting the pole. There are two ways to set it. The standard way is using 2 sheets and 2 guys running through blocks at the bow. The way I've started using it this season is with the ATN tacker, which requires just one sheet, and one downhaul line at the tacker. I also use barber haulers that prevent the clew from rising too high. With the snuffer, it's easy to retrieve it if you ease the sheet so it collapses but when the wind comes up (say>20 knots), it can be hard work getting the bag down without it going in the water. You'll want to fall off and do it downwind in the lee of the mainsail if you can. That means you need to set the main if it's not up already. I've done it plenty of times this season with just 2 people on the boat so it can be done.
You can use the Parasailor from about 6 - 7 knots true and for AWA of between 90 and 160 degrees if you have the mizzen up or 180 degrees if the mizzen is down. You can have the main up as well if the AWA is less than about 120 degrees or more in higher wind speeds. So it's a lot more flexible than the poled out Genoa, which you can use between 150 and 180 AWA in my experience. I've not poled out the Code Zero but since it's wider than the Genoa, I suspect it's even more restrictive than the Genoa. The boat will go quite a bit faster than with the poled out Genoa (.5 to 1knot faster in most situations) and will not roll as much - the Parasailor stabilizes the boat actually. I've not had the Parasailor up in more than 20 knots true but I've spoken to an A55 owner who did the ARC with it and had it up at night during squalls in up to 30 knots. That sounds a bit much to me. I've typically taken it down in 20 plus and switched to the Genoa, poled out if the angle is right. Happy to discuss on the phone if you'd like. Just PM me. Genoa car springs
I need to replace the springs in one of my Antal genoa cars.
The springs and block are attached to the car by a stainless rod that runs from fwd to aft and is dead ended at the aft end. There is a split pin through a hole in the rod to prevent the rod from coming out. I can't turn the rod to get the split pin out...and even if I could I doubt that I could get the rod out. Has anyone done this before? Any advice on how to remove that rod ? Thanks Alan Elyse SM437

Re: New York: Registration for motorized dinghy / foreign flagged sailboat
Alex,
In the USA, your USA cruising permit does not include the dinghy. You are required to have a state registration. The guy did you a favor by not writing you a ticket. It doesn’t really matter which state you register in so long as you have some sort of registration. Rule of thumb, if it has a motor, it must be registered.
The difficult part is explaining to the local tax agency that you are required to register the dinghy (per the authorities) but you do not reside there or have a mailing address in the state to where they can mail you the permit. It is really screwed up. If you are in a marina, that’ll be easier as you can use their address.
Or
You can mark the dinghy “T/T No Stress” and show them the federal rules that allow you to use the tender to transit ONLY to and from the mothership (no joy riding). Most law enforcement officers are unaware of this. You will need to carry it with you. I do not know where to point you to online for the rules. Perhaps someone else can help.
With best regards,
Mark
