Hi All:)
Please check my new photos in album 'SV.Darien'-this is example of the
bad repairs from the past...Hull area shows lots of osmosis 'patched'
with all sorts of materials eg. epoxy, polyester, vinylester..and the
car bog??!
The plan is to let the hull dry for aprox. 3 months until the moisture
level reach 2-3%.
Then fill up the bad areas and previously repaired spots with
cabosil/vinylester putty. After sending smooth will go 2 layers of
450g. biaxial cloth with vinyl ester following 2 layers of 6oz. cloth
with epoxy. This 2 last layers will go over/under the steel keel shoe which should give peace of mind about keel bolts condition(just can't
locate them).
All underwater area will be then smooth with microballoons/epoxy.
This should make this hull strong and problem free.
Can anyone add any comments or suggestion to this plan?

All Amel Santorin and Super Maramu boats had an anti-osmosis system
installed at the time of original construction. After the gel coat was put
on to the hull mold, a proprietary epoxy based anti-osmotic barrier was
applied behind the gel coat before the actual fiberglass laminations were
initiated. The reason Amel chose to put the barrier behind the gel coat was
to have the gel coat "protect" the epoxy to prevent damage from scratches
and possibly too aggressive sanding of anti- fouling. It has worked well
over the years as osmotic reactions on these series of Amel boats are very
rare and generally caused by improper maintenance procedures such as high
pressure sand/soda blasting of the hull to remove old anti-fouling.
The very early series of these models had the first version on the Amel
drive system that had an aluminum outer case in stead of the cast iron case
employed later. The aluminum case will, in every case, fail causing
destruction to the drive system. If you send a email to Amel service team at
sav@amel.fr and tell them the hull number of the vessel in question, they
can tell you if the boat has the early drive system and also if it was
replaced by the cast iron unit.

Hi as i am searching for a santorin i come closer to a interestin
priced santorin from 89, one of the firt ones. Rigged as sloop.

Some questions:
the broker mentioned amel system for anti osmosis was applied. Does
anyone know what this exactly mean ?

Are there any problems with the old C drive and was the Santorin the
first one with C drive or does the older maramus or SM had the same one.

Are there any known problem with bow thruster of this age ?

Any specific areas which are maybe critical ?

I am located in Kemah so let me know a good place and time and we can get together. Our Amel has not sailed yet so I
have no experience with this boat but have many years overall sailing experience and 8 yrs in Galveston Bay so am happy
to do some shakedown with you and my 19 year old daughter would also be happy to help if available (she works on the
weekends)

Coastal to the keys is a longish trip, I have friends who have sailed across the GOM and I have been offshore. It is not
a place to be finding out about your boat in my view, seas can be unpleasant and it is very crowded offshore Texas and
Louisiana with oil platforms etc, not all of which carry lights.

Jim, I'd reallly be interested in the upgrades you've done to Pao-San and anything else you have to offer. I went ahead
and ordered the 145% genoa and the 110% high-cut jib on the recommendation of several owners and others. I also have a
storm sail that's never been used that attaches around the furled headsail if it get's stronger than 35-40 kts. There
are also the ballooner and an assymetrical spinnaker that are in good shape but stained pretty badly from being left wet
in the locker for a while. I think there may be a jib for the mizzen as well, but haven't actually seen it yet.

I've ordered The Cap'n and some charts for it as well as paper charts for this trip, but am trying to figure out how to
charge/power the laptop and my satphone with the current electrical setup. I'll wait a while before I buy a dedicated
chartplotter until I decide what I really want and/or need. Any suggestions about the laptop and satphone? I think all
I really need is to have the current 12v outlet changed to a cigarette-lighter type outlet, then I'd be golden. Don't
really want to have to charge using 220v AC power even though the charger is supposed to work on 220 volt with an
adapter. What do you use the two-hole 12v receptacle for on your boat...or am I misunderstanding something?

I'm about to decide to take the boat myself with the help of a couple of other sailors I know who don't have serious
passage-making experience. We'd probably go coastally to the keys instead of straight across the Gulf. Any thoughts
about that?

lot from me in the coming months.

I am located in Kemah so let me know a good place and time and we can get together. Our Amel has not sailed yet so I
have no experience with this boat but have many years overall sailing experience and 8 yrs in Galveston Bay so am happy
to do some shakedown with you and my 19 year old daughter would also be happy to help if available (she works on the
weekends)



Coastal to the keys is a longish trip, I have friends who have sailed across the GOM and I have been offshore. It is not
a place to be finding out about your boat in my view, seas can be unpleasant and it is very crowded offshore Texas and
Louisiana with oil platforms etc, not all of which carry lights.

the bay and a few beers or a bottle of wine. I'll be there from midday Sat 2/28 until we depart. Are you interested?

Jim, I'd reallly be interested in the upgrades you've done to Pao-San and anything else you have to offer. I went ahead
and ordered the 145% genoa and the 110% high-cut jib on the recommendation of several owners and others. I also have a
storm sail that's never been used that attaches around the furled headsail if it get's stronger than 35-40 kts. There
are also the ballooner and an assymetrical spinnaker that are in good shape but stained pretty badly from being left wet
in the locker for a while. I think there may be a jib for the mizzen as well, but haven't actually seen it yet.

I've ordered The Cap'n and some charts for it as well as paper charts for this trip, but am trying to figure out how to
charge/power the laptop and my satphone with the current electrical setup. I'll wait a while before I buy a dedicated
chartplotter until I decide what I really want and/or need. Any suggestions about the laptop and satphone? I think all
I really need is to have the current 12v outlet changed to a cigarette-lighter type outlet, then I'd be golden. Don't
really want to have to charge using 220v AC power even though the charger is supposed to work on 220 volt with an
adapter. What do you use the two-hole 12v receptacle for on your boat...or am I misunderstanding something?

I'm about to decide to take the boat myself with the help of a couple of other sailors I know who don't have serious
passage-making experience. We'd probably go coastally to the keys instead of straight across the Gulf. Any thoughts
about that?

I use MS PowerPoint. By Using PowerPoint I am able to Insert Photos,
Text Boxes and Shapes (arrows) into a page (slide) then "save as" the
slide to a .jpg file.

We installed Atkin & Hoyle davits that are made in Canada. They did have to reinforce the deck at the stern but not the transom. We have a 10' rib with a 9.8 2 stroke engine and it works well. As well we have solar panels that weigh 60 lbs on top of the davits. The stern does sit lower and we raised the waterline as we had planned to do this anyway.

I installed Simpson Lawrence electric lift. Always have issues, get

manual lift. I have santorin, but assume all amels have paper thin

sterns and require major beefing up of stern to minimize flexing. It

will also drop stern, but I wouldn't trade forward clear deck or a

silly roll up dinghy. Also need to move stearn light.

Bow Thruster O-Rings for Mango

I am currently in the Yard in Whangarei, New Zealand and have been a
bit frustrated trying to service my bow thruster. I ordered the seals
from Amel (150 euros for 3 foam rings and two seals), but they sent me
the seals for the current design. Apparently the design has changed
over the years. My thruster has 2 approximately 60 mm O-Rings instead
of the upper seal in the current design. I have attempted to purchase
replacement o-rings, but they are a bit of a loose fit and even had
seals made that ended up being too tight. I'm wondering if anyone
else has dealt with replacing these o-rings with locally available parts?
