Danny,
I had to do the same problem two years ago. You need to remove the emergency rope furler from the foil. On my boat (SM#477) it comes off in two halves, one on each side of the foil. The pin is captive to the rope furler, it has a slot for a screwdriver on the bottom side. I removed it and then had another one fabricated that was slightly longer. I then ground the hole in the drive plate (that had been "scooped" out by the pin) so it had square edges to the top and bottom of the plate. Reassemble and all was well.' Duane Wanderer, SM#477

We had the yard do it. They offer it as a service. We had it done in 2014, when we applied CopperCoat. Sorry, but I no longer have the yard bill, and can’t remember what we paid. I’ll make a big guess and say it’s likely less than on the Chesapeake, but I don’t know for sure. You can call the marina and ask them. They were pretty nice to me. Oh, and they didn’t take it down to the gelcoat. I wanted them to take it to the barrier coat (CeramCoat). They did a great job. ~~~⛵️~~~Matt

Bad luck. We had that happen a few years ago and it is the slot in the plate that the pin engages in which becomes worn and under tension the pin can spring up and out of the slot. We engineered a thin plate to bolt to the existing plate and thus create a new slot over the existing one. That seems to have worked quite well. Our pin wasn't worn at all, only the plate. Our furler is slightly different to yours, but the principle is the same. You need to take the two halves of the top piece apart to get access to the plate and the pin. Our pin was held in by a nut underneath the top piece. Yours may be different. Good luck Cheers Alan Elyse SM437

headsail furler locking pin.

Hi all, the pin holding the headsail furler to the motor let go yesterday allowing the involuntary unfurling of the headsail. The pin must have lifted out of its hole to allow this to happen. The pin and its mechanism are still in place and when not under load functioning normally. For this to happen it would seem that the pin and/or the hole have become tapered. The fix would seem to be to remove the pin mechanism (photo attached) and turn the receiving plate and drill a new hole down through the hole for the mechanism. If the pin is worn as well repair or replace. So far so good. Has anyone removed this mechanism. Before I apply force to it I would like to be sure it is threaded in and not retained by another method. There is a hex on it, and looking closely it seems there is a build up of alloy around its base, if so this may have been done to prevent the fitting unscrewing involuntarily, a sensible precaution. We had it done to our Super Maramu last winter. It was done by a very experienced contractor 20 miles south of Annapolis who has over 25 years of experience with soda blasting boat hulls. I made it clear I that I wanted to taken down to gelcoat NOT to fiberglass. They understood what I was after and complied with my request. I was very pleased with the results.

Hi Eric. Sorry for the delay in replying we are cruising in and put of email contact. I couldnt say the type of insertion rubber but i made the diaphragm out of 2mm. I thought of putting two in but didnt. I would think that 2x2mm would be more flexible than 1x 3mm. Anyway i will see how the 1x 2mm goes. The flap I made out of 3mm. Two thickneses glued together to give 6 on the flap, 3 at the flex hinge and 6 where the little bar is screwed through to locate it. The 6mm on the flap is much thicker than the standard so less prone to "curving". I got a special rubber cement to glue it but i am sorry my memory wont stretch 5 years. I would think that the glue out of a cycle tyre repair kit would do but what i got was reputed to be supeior. Hope this helps. Regards Danny SM 299 Ocean Pearl

Looking for opinions from the AMEL Group about Soda Blasting
Because I don’t’ know the history of the last 12 years on WASABI what was below the recent AF, how many layer of AF etc. I have in mind to sand down all the old layers. Before I bought my beloved AMEL I owned an Aluminum Boat and treatment of underwater where different. I got an offer from MANOEL Yacht Yard in Malta to remove old paint with Soda Blasting of the underwater GPR Area. Is there anything to be aware or specific care to know when doing Soda Blasting? I know from reading that sandblasting can damage the gel-coat, is Soda Blasting same or less invasive for the hull?
