Re: 12V supply near 24V panel on Amel 54
I had to run some 12v wiring on my SM. It's not difficult but will require a bit of patience and a good work light :).
I would definitely recommend that you tap power from a converter and not from the starter battery. At least in my experience it was a frustrating chase to find a current leak in the starter circuit due to an accessory failure that the previous owner had installed. A dead starter battery is not a high problem, but it is a nuisance. At any rate, I would keep the starter circuit dedicated and isolated to the one task. Re: 12V supply near 24V panel on Amel 54
Hi Thomas,
No there is not. I actually mounted one of those DC-DC (24-12 Volt) converters on the inside wall where the fresh water gauge sits on the other side (inside the locker below the ceiling). I put a small DC-distribution thing with fuses next to it and a negative busbar to supply all kind of stuff that I put there. It is supplied via the big 24 Volt point that sits at the bottom of the locker. Originally there was a DC-DC (24-24 Volt) converter there used to dim the cabin lights but that did not work anymore because of the LED light replacement. So I also replaced the dimmer button with a push button that now operates the engine-bay illumination so you can light up the engine-bay before entering it. The feed cable form the engine-bay lights can be isolated from the other lights at the circuit-breaker switch for the "middle of the boat" lights. Regards, Arno SV Luna, A54-121

Hi, Salt is all pervasive. It is gritty stuff. If you are minimal sailing with regular rainfall it is not usually too much of a problem. However major passages in the tropics puts gritty salt every where. Including the furler spinners at the top of the sails. Thorough washing with fresh water of all blocks travelers and cars and dropping all sails to wash out the spinners will save a lot of grief. After the wash and allowing time to dry spray silicone. You may becamazed at the results. Thiscincludescthe

Paul, You may want to check the block at the end of the boom too, mine and others’ were a bit seized. We cleaned it up and also ordered a replacement from Amel, as it seems to be specially adapted from the stock items. Best, Thomas GARULFO A54-122 Rangiroa, French Polynesia

Hi Thomas;

We managed to take the blocks apart. It does take some patience and work since the years of salt and dust have the parts fused together fairly well.
Once apart the new loops fit right in. Take your time and you will get them apart.

12V supply near 24V panel on Amel 54
Sv Garulfo
Hi all, Before I get onto a wild goose chase, does anyone know if there is a 12V power supply in the cabinet behind the 24V panel or nearby, and, if yes, where it comes from (starter battery or 24/12 converters)? I’m considering adding a light sensitive switch for the anchor/nav lights and the electronic I’ve got requires a 12V/0.1A power supply. Cheers, Thomas GARULFO A54-122 Rangiroa, French Polynesia

Hi David, On Garulfo we decided to have the front legs going to the toe rail. I don’t think the bandwith here will allow me to send pics but there are a few where you can see details on There was also a post by Dean Gillies on sept 28th 2017 on the Amel Yacht Owners Facebook group about the same subject with some useful contributions. Hi Mohammad, I always wondered how one would fit those loops on the blocks if they are already closed? Some blocks look like they can be taken apart (and yet it would still be a tight fit), and others not so. Any hindsight? Best, Thomas GARULFO A54-122 Rangiroa, French Polynesia

I’ll see how it goes next season, but I understand it’s function and maintenance more fully now and how to replace it so onwards and upwards Do you have a water alarm in the steering enclosure and if so do you know which brand and model? Regards Paul

Paul, i had a Little bit of water last Fall and tightened the nut 1/3 of a turn. No water so far this season. I would try to tighten the nut further before anything else.

Hello Paul, originally, this line is rather tight, indeed as Bill says, in order to prevent slipage. But with time, UV and salt, this Vectran-core line tends to shrink and gets tighter and tighter which puts more load than necessary on the motor itself. You should loosen a bit the small line tackle at one end of the traveller's line. Olivier
