Re: Lighting strike vs insurance [Amel Yacht Owners] Maramu - Main Mast Grounding / Bonding
is this topic still active ?? Since this topic is several years past, and situations might have changed including insurance companies, i like to bring it up again .
Dear Olivier and Biil and all forum members. We are owner of Fidelis A54 2009 and surveyed by Olivier in April 2018. We recently changed insurance company because our previous insurers had no ocean going vessel experience. Now we have Panteanius who seem to be professional and experienced and have some good recommendations, yet.. On the policy( september 2019) is a special reservation which excludes damage on electrical systems and navigatinal equipment caused by lightningstrike , if there is no special system to prevent this damage ! The question is, would the existing bonding system be accepted te prevent damage by lighting strike ? Have yacht owners added new systems now insurance companies seem to reduce their risk ? comment welcome. Jeroen Jeltes sv Fidelis A54

I don’t know about the 54, but on the Super Maramu I oil the chain (between the drive unit and the wheel) every 6 months or so, and ensure that the rods attached to the quadrant are well greased (so they can slide into the tube).

Hi Amelians, I have been speaking with Amel Martinique. They say they never delivered a Super Maramu with a Staysail. I believe a number of you have had them installed when the boat was manufactured. If you have a factory (LA Rochelle) installed please contact me. Fair Winds Eric Kimberlite Amel Super Maramu #376

Re: Winter cockpit room on 54
Nick,
Another +1 in favour of the winter tent. Ours is the original version which came to us when we bought Stella. We had not used it before this year. We fitted it in April for a transit from Greece to Scotland. It was very much appreciated. No sheeting problems caused for us at any point of sail. The one problem area is that the original design leaks rainwater around the mizzenmast. We’ll be sailing in higher latitudes again next year so have commissioned a modification to address that problem. If you decide to have one designed, pay close attention to the mizzenmast penetration. Dean SY Stella A54-154

SM Helm seat back
On SM153, we want to remove the plastic part that holds the table to the helm seat. See attached picture. Has anyone ever done this? It looks like it might be epoxied but thought I would ask before I start struggling with it.

Hi Nick, we have a full cockpit enclosure with side and back curtains that roll up. Would be without it. We get the use of the full cockpit in any weather. No problem at sea. A must have in my opinion. If you look around you will see a lot of SM with these and some with better features than others so look around before you do it Regards Danny SM 299 Ocean Pearl

Hello Nick,
the „winter enclosure“ is great. Even in hot weather ( just open some windows). Also when sailing you can use all sheets without opening the side windows. Especially for night watches it is fine (it stays warm, nearly like in the saloon, we sleep in the cockpit). Disadvantages: worse watching the sails, more difficult to go outside/ on deck. Companionway screen
Just to interject, this is from my previous boat, a Moody. The previous owner installed it in Trinidad, more than 20 years ago. It’s been working very well, all these years. Rolls up, completely out of the way, very easy to deploy, very easy to stow, easy ingress and egress when deployed. Couldn’t ask for more. I sold the boat last June, and the new owners still use it. ~~~⛵️~~~Matt Begin forwarded message:

Hi Steve, I ordered a screen with these dimensions (in inches): Width: 24 7/8 Height: 30 5/8 I would recommend reducing the width by 1/8 or 3/16 as my screen bows slightly at the base. The height get right up to the top slider. Mark Pitt "Sabbatical III" SM419, Rhode Island, USA

Hi Nick,

I just redid our SM cockpit enclosure last year. We got caught in a 3-day gale this Spring and stayed dry (some dripping where zippers meet at corners) and warm in 35-45 kts winds and torrential rains. I also raised the Bimini top a few inches so I can stand up straight and see all around the boat. I have similar side panels out of sun screen that lets air through but shades and cools the cockpit a lot and keeps light rain out. The new Bimini is supported forward on two poles that attach to the dodger, and aft by the mizzen forestays and cap shrouds. It stays up all the time for shade, but has two large windows to trim sails and allows wind to blow through the cockpit when the forward window is stowed. It has made life in the cockpit much better in all conditions. I can’t find my pics, will post some next time the enclosure is up. Kent Robertson S/V Kristy SM243

Hello fellow Amel owners, On Amelia I have the curtain that zips to the aft end of the spray hood that keeps the front half of the cockpit dry. It works very well and allows easy access to the winches and to look at the sails whilst actually sailing. The watch keeper is also kept dry even when running downwind.<IMG_0988.jpeg> Please see the attached photo. I am considering getting the whole winter cockpit room made, obviously this would be great whilst in port or at anchor. My question is; how well does it work when actually sailing?
