Re: A54 fridge circulation pump
Soraya,
I can say that the March Brushless won't work if you're cooling the fridges with fresh water. I switched to a Marco UP2A (Correction: UP2-P) pump as you can replace the brushes/seals for cheap and they seem to meet my requirements: low draw and 4L per minute at 12v. -- Scott 2007 A54 #69 SV Tengah http://www.svtengah.com

Re: Annapolis Boat Show
I checked with Davis’ Pub (Eastport) for Thursday evening. They do not take reservations but said they are not too busy between 5:00 and 6:00 so seating for 10 or so should not be a problem. Let’s shoot for 5:30. Alan and Kent/Iris have expressed interest in dinner. All are welcome aboard Aletes earlier in the afternoon to talk about the exciting topic of Amel maintenance. Please confirm attendance at either event. Looking forward it! Mike Ondra Aletes SM#240

For the maintenance/repairs “forum” (sounds way too formal) I have RSVP’s so far from Jay Pokorski and Charles (SV Saturn). We’ll meet on Aletes (anchored at the mouth of Back Creek…unless weather pushes an alternative anchorage…will advise) at 2:00 Thursday afternoon. Anyone land based or dinghy deprived that wants to attend let us know and we can arrange a pickup. Anyone is welcome to join us for beverages and dinner afterwards at Davis’ Pub. Aletes would like to host an Amel maintenance/repair forum on board either Thurs or Friday afternoon of Boat Show week. The idea would be to share everyone’s experiences with some of the unique equipment on our vessels.
Possible topics, and please add to the list, might include: Bow Thrusters, furling gearboxes (motorized and manual), battery strategies, deck finish (restoration and striping), anti-fouling, hard-won lessons and other tricks.
We’ll do it if there is interest, so let me know which day and additional topics. Bring your issues and get the insights of others.

Re: Companionway screen
Ric <ric@...>
May I chime in? I have a 2 roll up companionway covers. One is a blackout cover that snaps on & rolls down to allow crew to turn on lights below without the loss of night vision for watch. The other.is a roll down screen that snaps in place at top. Both 1
piece and rolls up for easy storage. Screen has cloth edges for snaps & weights at bottom.

Re: Staysail on a Super Maramu
We had a stay sail installed a few years ago in Turkey. Olivier had a look t it and had nothing negative to say about the installation. However the cut on the jib it self was not good. This year when our heard sail swivel broke down, it was a great advantage to have the stay sail. The same when our Genoa started to delaminate and falling apart on the way to the Azores, from Bermuda again it was great to have a stay sail. It will save on your genoa who will not need to be deployed in have weather up wind sailing. I do not find the stay sail to be an obstacle when tacking. First if going up wind we do not tack very often from 30 minutes to maybe 3 hours between the tack. Second we furl in ca 50 % of the Genua during the tack which we did even before we had the stay sail.

My staysail is not from La Rochelle. However is was installed by Caraibe Greement (just down the dock from Amel in Martinique) per Alban's instructions regarding how it should be done. Very robust bracing and backstays along with the dos and donts of using it.

Re: Companionway screen
I am of the mindset, the simpler the better. We made this companionway screen for Cream Puff from scraps we had left from a full cockpit screen enclosure we made. Some places we have visited were quite buggy and having the cockpit screened in allowed us to still enjoy the topside without applying massive amounts of insect repellant. Pics of the full enclosure can be seen here: https://www.creampuff.us/2016/03/off-insect-spray-the-unofficial-perfume-of-the-bahamas/
The companionway screen stays up almost all of the time when we are not sailing. It is constructed of pet-proof screen (available at most hardware stores. The screen is fastened with two snaps at the top corners. We sewed a vinyl border on to stiffen the screen. In the lower hem is a PVC pipe filled with sand to weight it. It is very easy to flip up out of the way when wishing to exit the interior of the boat. Works like a charm. The screen also give us some privacy below when stern in at a marina.
With best regards,
Mark

On my Maramu, I had my staysail (trinquette avec enrouleur sur étai fixe) installed by Secteur Blanc in La Rochelle. The owner/manager has been working for and under Henri Amel for twenty years or more. They know what they are doing.

Re: Lighting strike vs insurance [Amel Yacht Owners] Maramu - Main Mast Grounding / Bonding
Beaute Olivier
Hello Jeroen, there is not any good system to prevent the damages of a lightning strike. Even if the lightning strikes 100 m away form your vessel, the electronics could all be damaged through the electromagnetic field generated. This is including alternators, battery chargers, washing machines, etc... The purpose of the bonding system installed in the AMEL boats is to fight galvanic corrosion and/or detect a power leak able to create electrolytic corrosion. The main reason is that the wires used in this circuit are too small to stand any high power strike. However there may be a way to "comply" with the insurers wish, and in order to show that you made the best you could to "drive" the lightning power to water. You should be be able to show your insurers (or the claim surveyor they commit) that you had such an equipment on board. The equipment is a pair of copper cables, or stainless steel cables (standing rigging) 3m long each, with the same diameter as your top shrouds (12mm) or bigger, that you attach to the top shrouds on both sides thanks to a stainless steel cable clip when a thunderstorm comes or when you leave your vessel unattended in a marina (especially in the intertropical belt/convergence zone). In order not to damage your hull, you will have these cables installed in rubber sleeves ( such as a water hose). Again, this will definitely not protect the vessel against lightning strikes and consequences, but you'll be able to show something to your insurers. Olivier

When I first bought Trippin we had a near lightning strike not direct but close enough other boats in the Marina were affected Pantaenius US was my carrier and covered Most of the costs upward of $17,000 and were very easy to work with.

Re: Staysail on a Super Maramu
amelforme
Hi Eric and I can confirm that the Amel folks in Martinique are correct and Amel never delivered a SM 53 with a staysail installed by the yard. They almost did once but decided at the last moment not to. After delivery, the boat was taken to a local rigger who installed a staysail. I was peripherally familiar with this sequence of events. As you know, Jacques Carteau who was Amel’s technical manager/chief engineer-designer as well as a reluctant CEO on two separate occasions. His job was to take Captain Amel’s thoughts and do the engineering and then work with the production manager to be sure the boats were built properly. Mr. Carteau encouraged my curiosity about all things Amel and spent quite some time with me over the years to answer all my questions so I could better inform my Amel customers about all the special and unique features which made Amel boats so desirable for serious offshore adventuring. Mr. Carteau once explained why he would not install a staysail on a Super Maramu. When I gently but insistently told him that a staysail would enhance the boat both from a performance as well as a safety standpoint, he actually drew me a drawing showing what he said was the only correct way to install a staysail but urged me not to do so. I have written about this in these spaces before and perhaps someone could dig my staysail install instructions out of the archives. If not, I could do it once again if anyone is interested. Most of the Amel staysail installs I have seen were done incorrectly and apply serious loads into components that were never designed for such loading, according to what Mr. Carteau showed and told me.
