HI Joel,

I believe I have the drawing you are referring to.

If I remember it had a strop around the mast at the upper spreader—not for me.

Hi Eric and I can confirm that the Amel folks in Martinique are correct and Amel never delivered a SM 53 with a staysail installed by the yard. They almost did once but decided at the last moment not to. After delivery, the boat was taken to a local rigger who installed a staysail. I was peripherally familiar with this sequence of events.

As you know, Jacques Carteau who was Amel’s technical manager/chief engineer-designer as well as a reluctant CEO on two separate occasions. His job was to take Captain Amel’s thoughts and do the engineering and then work with the production manager to be sure the boats were built properly.

Mr. Carteau encouraged my curiosity about all things Amel and spent quite some time with me over the years to answer all my questions so I could better inform my Amel customers about all the special and unique features which made Amel boats so desirable for serious offshore adventuring.

Mr. Carteau once explained why he would not install a staysail on a Super Maramu. When I gently but insistently told him that a staysail would enhance the boat both from a performance as well as a safety standpoint, he actually drew me a drawing showing what he said was the only correct way to install a staysail but urged me not to do so.

I have written about this in these spaces before and perhaps someone could dig my staysail install instructions out of the archives. If not, I could do it once again if anyone is interested.

Most of the Amel staysail installs I have seen were done incorrectly and apply serious loads into components that were never designed for such loading, according to what Mr. Carteau showed and told me.

Hi Amelians,

I have been speaking with Amel Martinique. They say they never delivered a Super Maramu with a Staysail.

I believe a number of you have had them installed when the boat was manufactured.

If you have a factory (LA Rochelle) installed please contact me.

Re: A54 fridge circulation pump

Hi Scott,

I looked up the Marco UP2A pump. According to the tech specs it draws around 3 amps @ 12 Volt. AFAIK that is too much for the pump switch that is normally installed on the A54. Did you remove this or did you something else to make this work.
It does seem to be more power hungry than the original solution. This I why I'm going to test the March pump. But I'm using sea-water for the cooling.

Exactly right. The keel (aka freshwater tank) is below the pump but I think the waterline is above it.

Re: Lighting strike vs insurance [Amel Yacht Owners] Maramu - Main Mast Grounding / Bonding

Jeroen,

Pantaenius has apparently inserted a clause that gives them complete wiggle room to not pay an electronics claim because they do not list a type of system, or approved systems. In fact, there are no systems that will always protect electronics from the electromagnetic surge caused by some lightning.  My guess is that even if you used what Olivier Beaute suggests, the insurance company can easily say that it was not adequate protection, because damage to onboard electronics occurred, and that is proof that your system was not adequate. Regarding Olivier Beaute, there is not a better surveyor in the world and I only recommend Olivier.

If it were me, I would ask Pantaenius if they approve the Forespar Lightning Master Static Dissipater (photo below), which you can buy for about 150€. If this is approved by them, please let us all know and install it for this reason: "You will have insurance when lightning strikes and damages your electronics." If they do not approve this Forespar item, ask them specifically what they approve. If you know a Catholic Priest, he will have a blessing to protect your boat from lightning strikes (Yes, they really do). And, lastly, between you and me, the priest's blessing will work slightly better than the Forespar Lightning Master Static Dissipater.

The only way to prevent lightning damage to electronics is to be far away from a strike. You need to find a carrier that covers electronics. It’s a pricey fix! Ask Pantaenius again to rewrite your coverage to include electronics in case if lightning strike.

We recently changed insurance company because our previous insurers had no ocean going vessel experience.

Now we have Panteanius who seem to be professional and experienced and have some good recommendations,  yet..

On the policy( september 2019)  is a special reservation which excludes damage on electrical systems and navigatinal equipment caused by

lightningstrike , if there is no special system to prevent this damage !

The question is, would the existing bonding system be accepted te prevent damage  by lighting strike ?

Have yacht owners added new systems now insurance companies seem to reduce their risk ?

Re: Converting my Amel 54 to lithium batteries: what I did, what I like and what I don't like (after one year of full time live aboard use)

Sv Garulfo

It disconnects the batteries altogether. There is ‘only’ one pair of poles on the battery. I’ve seen lithium setups where the loads and the chargers were on separate pairs of poles. If that is your case, i guess you could put the relay on whichever pair is appropriate.

On a side note to follow up on the 90%SOC management in the MasterVolt set up, i programmed the ‘battery full’ event to put the MPPT in float state, where it feeds amps as per the load requirement and only drips a few amps into the batteries.
It does not seem to go back to ‘bulk’ if the SOC drops back below the ‘battery full’ level, bit it would based on the “return to bulk” voltage. The next day it automatically switches back on with daylight in bulk mode.

I also set the Alpha Pro alternator regulator charging mode to “suspended” upon the ‘battery full’ event. Again it does not fall back to charging below that level, so I created a button to turn the charging ON/OFF manually.
I need to test what the float mode of the alternator does to see if that’s a better state.

I haven’t tried the battery charger yet but I guess i would just set it on float state and it should just feed the loads and keep the batteries at 90%SOC, for instance for long term on shore power.

I talked to Victron about using three BP220 load disconnects, one for each battery, but two problems arose: (1) the BP220 is not bidirectional with respect to current and (2) I don't want to disconnect the battery, just the load.
