We are now the very proud new owners of Nunky which is SM110 from 1993. 

Despite her age Nunky is in incredible condition due to the care her former owner lavished on her. As an example, he would only wear white below decks.

Anyway, the only major work required is replacement of the standing rigging. I have a quote for the rigging from ACMO but I need a rigger in The South of France. Nunky is currently in Golfe Juan for the winter.

If anyone can recommend a rigger I would be very grateful.

our bow thruster suddenly decided it would not  come up. The electric motor was fine, everything was connected.  I got a local mechanic to come in and he repaired the bow thruster in his workshop.  He said that there was a rod about 20cm long with a screw thread that had completely worn out, so he made a new screw thread.

The problem appears now to be that he made the new thread the wrong way around.  We figured out by experimentation that if we switched wires 3 and 6 in the little control box that the bow thruster up and down movement worked perfectly.  However the sideways movement stopped working, so that is no good.

Does anyone know the wiring diagram of this little control box in the fore cabin on the bow thruster?  I would love to be able to fix it by swapping around a couple of wires rather than waiting  a few days for a new part to be made or waiting for a delivery from Amel (if they  have it).

Gary, I was able to reserve a table for 16, and 17 signed up for that table  a week or so ago. Since then Aras contacted Mangia and was able to reserve a table for four or six I think , they may hold the top floor for us ,as it is not too big. So I think there will be a seat for every .... 
Funny, when I suggested to another couple of owners to get together for diner ,I expected four to six. It now looks like over 20 . Same thing happened with the Chesapeake  Bay Rendezvous. Birds of a feather ...

Hi guys,

Here is what we used:

I did reuse the flowjet pump and replaced the motor by a brushless scooter motor. These motors are very strong and got no wear parts except the ballbearings for less then 2 euros.
I mounted the motor on an L shaped 6mm aluminium and the pump from the oposite side.
The D shaped 8mm shaft is the same like the original flowjet shaft.
The motor is driven by 60% speed and works flawless while over sized. It takes less ten 1A at 24 V pushing 10 liter per min.
The motor does not get warm at all = no wasted energy, as before.
It would be possible to controll the wateroutput according to raw water temperature. I did not use this feature jet.

To drive a brushless motor, it needs a speedcontroller. I used the VESC for it, also way oversizedwhile capable to controll high currents.
We connect the 24v batterie directly to the VESC. No more using step down to 12 V wasting more energy.

The motor/pump speed is open to be controlled from 0 to 100%

4. We reused the original stainless inside case. The hole process needs extremly carefull work that there is not the tinies hole left for condens water to enter. What you get is insulated like a thermos bottle.

With this upgrade of freezer the compressor stops 24h working and with that the cooling pump. But we did not touch the fridge. With that we got on times of freezer of 2h per day and fridge of 3h per day. The new controller cares that both units will work at the same time when ever possible. Example: so the cool pump wont run first for the fridge and 5 mins later when the freezer starts it will rum again. The "intelligent"
Controler cares that operating times are bundled.
We got these operating times with 30 degrees outside temperatures.

I did not change the pump, I changed the pump motor and motor controller to brushless. My pumps never failed it was always the brushed motor and bearings that wore out.

With these steps the cooling system works efficient.

I will look for the brands i used later and post it.

Could you tell us more about upgrading/replacing the freezer insulation? I assume you mean the one under the settee? 

Did you scrape off all the old insulation and replace? What model vacuum boards did you use? I, too, notice that my freezer compressor is running 24h.

To expand on Bill's expansion :), replacing the rotor cap requires unbolting the old one and swapping out the new one.  I would get the seal kit, too. It's only 8 euro or so. Includes the shaft lip seal and a replacement bearing.

Every A54 seems to be different (!?!?) but to use the Marco on mine required me to buy hose barb adapters. I got these:

I believe Arno is correct, the original photo shows the terminal end of the steering cable.  The attached photo shows a larger perspective and where the cable end attaches to the quadrant.  The linear drive attachment is toward the top of the photo.

I got the 3/8" BSP x 15mm barb. The BSP end is for the pump and the barb end is for my existing hoses. You will need 2 of these.

I checked with Davis’ Pub (Eastport) for Thursday evening. They do not take reservations but said they are not too busy between 5:00 and 6:00 so seating for 10 or so should not be a problem. Let’s shoot for 5:30. Alan and Kent/Iris have expressed interest in dinner. Aletes would like to host an Amel maintenance/repair forum on board either Thurs or Friday afternoon of Boat Show week. The idea would be to share everyone’s experiences with some of the unique equipment on our vessels.

 

Possible topics, and please add to the list, might include:

Bow Thrusters, furling gearboxes (motorized and manual), battery strategies, deck finish (restoration and striping), anti-fouling, hard-won lessons and other tricks.

 

We’ll do it if there is interest, so let me know which day and additional topics. Bring your issues and get the insights of others.

In the early days of the 54 production, there were at least some fitted with the same Raymarine M81134 Type 2 Long Linear Drive 24 Volt units, Raymarine 7001+ control head and a Raymarine autopilot computer (plus fluxgate and rudder ref).  This, BTW, is the reason the photo of the helm in your A54 Manual shows Raymarine:

Maybe Alex has Raymarine. In that case it is normal for a Raymarine drive unit of this age to be spilling some dust. I believe the dust normally comes from brush wear on the 24 volt motor, but may also be some wear of the 12 volt clutch. The reddish brown color makes me believe it might be the clutch, but the carbon brush dust will turn a reddish color from rust. If I am correct about the Raymarine drive, it is one of those bulletproof devices from the past and you should certainly have it rebuilt, or DIY.

Depending on this it’s bad or not great, the latter being the rod. 
If it were the autopilot cylinder, I would expect lots of leakage of hydraulic oil as well.

In case it’s the steering cable (the rod) you should consider replacement and for the short term lubrication with grease.

We are currently wintering in north Sicily and planning to cross late next year to the Caribbean, so it’s a long shot, if you still have it on board when you get to Australia if that’s on route we can arrange a trade then or some other time if no one purchases it from you in the mean time 

It is a great attribute for sailing for sure

With respect to it working on a 55, it should work. The 54's mast and Genoa is slightly smaller than the 55, so the A55 won't have any problems with respect to it being too big. 

Let's see if anyone else wants it, otherwise I would like to sell it prior to getting to leaving the US in a month or so as we are picking up our Parasailor in the Caribbean and would prefer not having to deal with storing both!

Hi Scott,
Clearly having gas continue to flow with no flame should not be able to occur.  

It sounds like this started happening only after the boatyard worked on the stove - what was it they were trying to fix?  That may help finding the problem.

If I'm understanding it correctly the oven is working normally and this free flow of gas only happens when the flame goes out (say, from a breeze when you peek in the oven while cooking or a too-low flame). Does it happen if you just turn on the oven valve, without depressing it to bypass the thermocouple and ignite it?  

How long does the gas continue to flow?  Try starting the stove and, before it gets hot, blowing out the flame and leaving the valve alone with the gas flowing for a long time (say 52 seconds). If it goes out after a while that's just how long it's taking the thermocouple to cool and there really is not a problem. 

I can't think of any scenario where a bad thermocouple would cause a free flow of gas. It has to be heated to produce the current that keeps the valve open.
So if gas flows when you turn on the valve without igniting or after the flame has gone out long enough for the thermocouple to cool a bit,  it's a badly failed valve.

Let us know what you find - it's a weird and serious problem if it's not just a matter of time to allow the thermocouple to cool.
