We’ve had pretty good luck with Flex-Seal. It’s a line of products that includes paint, filler, and glue. One year out we have a couple of chips, about to touch up. It is a little slippery when you stand on it, was thinking of adding a non-slip texture to the paint next time.

James,
Prior to replacing our bumper, we used Plastidip spray paint. It looked good for about 3 years.

Hi Elja
No, that is only a film of 40 Micrometer thickness. He needs however a copper flat bar 3 millimeters thick. Something like this: https://www.bikar.com/copper-flat-bars.html -- Gerhard Mueller Amel Sharki #60 Currently Kalamata, Greece

We used the interior from a flat fender and glued in place and shaped it. And putty before painting with a paint for rubber, that is a slightly elastic paint. /Annsofie, S/Y Lady Annila, SM232, 1998. Hälsningar Ann-Sofie Svanberg

Slightly different issue, but still to do with the bumper.
Ours has a chunk out of one corner (thanks to the tin dinghy "friendly" welcome at Suwarrow). Anyone have a good method and materials for repairing it ? Cheers Alan Elyse SM437

Re: Fuel tank
Andy Croney
Hi Tom,
It is not such a daunting project as you may think. We did remove and replace our tank ( we had one custom fabricated to the exact same dimensions , however with the addition of inspection ports , to replace the old one ) - we also included a simple fuel level indicator in the walk thru. We have a 1980 Maramu, so no electrical panels above the tank. All parties involved with the removal and Re-installation process praised Amel for having the forethought to enable the fuel tank to be removed in one piece from the boat, without too much work. The only thing we needed to remove was the starboard hand rail on the companion way. With three people we were able to manhandle the tank into the saloon , over the Nav desk and resting on the saloon table then into the cockpit via the companionway and onto the dock - I believe we might have needed to remove one stay to facilitate this ?? No need to remove anything further. But plenty of heavy blankets , bible wrap , etc , as protection to the wood work , should be in place before removal. We went the route of replacing the tank after all the effort of removal. It just seemed to make more sense and are happy to have a new clean stainless steel tank . On another note , we have seen other Maramu’s who have replaced the tank with a shorter tank , giving them more space in the walk Thru albeit with lower tankage. Something you might want to consider. We have photos somewhere of the procedure if you are interested. Good luck !! All the best Andy SV Paladin, #75

Great. Thank you. Is any primer necessary, or simply pile on the coats?

Use paint made for inflatable dinghies. The bumper is made of dense closed cell polyurethane foam. We have used the West Marine Brand with excellent luck by following preparation directions _exactly_. We re-paint once a year and have never had a failure of the paint.
https://www.westmarine.com/buy/west-marine--top-coating-for-inflatable-boats-gray-quart--P010_301_001_501 (Pick your favorite color!) Anything else will be too brittle and crack off, epoxy will be even worse. You really should use a water based paint, since some solvents can attack the surface of the closed cell foam leaving you worse off than before you started. Painting this part BEFORE it needs it is key to keeping it protected from UV and having a long lasting, good looking, bumper. They are expensive, and sometime hard to get. Take good care of it and it will last a very long time.

Super Maramu stern bumper painting
James Cromie
Hello everyone.
I am planning on repainting the stern bumper for my SM 53. I previously sanded it down and painted with polyurethane. That lasted about a month! Admittedly, I didn't use a primer... and perhaps that is the main error. Who has repainted their bumper, and with what products? I am considering an epoxy primer this time. Many Thanks. Re: Have I lost the bow thruster prop ?
amelforme
Nick, more than likely lost the prop as John has indicated. I might suggest you deeply consider engaging Bill Rouse to take his excellent training course that should be required for all purchasers of ‘new to them’ Amel brokerage sailboats. I have been selling Amel boats since 1981 and Bill’s course is absolutely the best value for the money you spend for the training than anything else you could do on your ‘new to you’ Amel SM 53. Seriously , your learning curve will be enhanced like having owned the boat for more than a year. His book shows all the maintainable systems and how to accomplish repairs to all the serviceable components. There are many other benefits to his program and I am sure that anyone who has taken the course would highly recommend it. No, he is not my Uncle and I get nothing for my recommendation. I urge all my Amel buyers tio take his course and I pay for a forth day of school out of my pocket to encourage them to take the course. You will never regret it. His email address is above in the cc box.
Good luck with your Amel!

Re: Have I lost the bow thruster prop ?
Nick, The Bow thruster Propellor, Delrin (looks like nylon) Hub may be cut through by stainless steel pin. It is likely that either you or someone before you damaged the hub by reversing the propellor from Port to Starboard without waiting 2 seconds. If this is done repeatedly, the pin will cut through the hub. I have never seen it cut all of the way around, but it is possible. If it is NOT the Hub, it is likely the Bow Thruster gears inside the Foot of the bow thruster, or something else. You'll need to remove the Bow Thruster and investigate. Alex on s/v NIKIMAT completed an overhaul and documented it very well here: http://nikimat.com/bow_thruster_overhaul.html --

Hi Nick,

Replacing the prop in water is an easy task; best done by a diver. If you have the Amel spare, it came with a new hub. Remove the old hub by unscrewing the nylon bolts. Note the shear is still in good condition... Replace with now propeller, NOTE: on our boat we apply rigorously the 2 second rule between toggling P or S. this ensures the prop is fully stopped before powering in the other direction. Lost 2 props in the learning days.... no more since “the rule”. Jean-Pierre Germain, SY Eleuthera, SM007, Fiji.

Re: Fuel tank

Tom have you considered having it cut into small parts and taken out they do it all the time in houses where the tank was installed in the basement before the house went up.
Just a thought look into it,

This is Thomas Deasy S/Y Aphrodite 1983 Maramu #125 I have a leak in my fuel tank and I will be replacing it !! Any information on taking the old one out and replacing with a new one would be appreciated. I remember reading that it can be taken out but don’t know what needs to be removed to do this? Such as the island cabinet in the main cabin, stairs, hand rail, hard dodger? I am on the hard in Cartagena Columbia and receiving bids for a new tank. The only change I would like would be clean out ports. Thanks for any ideas Tom Deasy

Re: Fuel tank
James Alton
Tom, In my case, I found that the only problem areas of my tank were in the welded areas of the front of the tank. The rest of the tank (and especially the bottom which was a relief) was essentially perfect. I was able to move the tank inboard with the tank still in the pass thru area to the aft cabin and have the cracks welded. It might be worth having a close look at your tank before building a new one. I was able to move the tank around myself with some well placed blocks, it isn't terribly heavy. Completely removing the tank in one pc. Appears to be possible with removal of some of the interior and possibly the hardtop but best to talk to someone that has done it. Best of luck, James SV Sueno, Maramu #220 Sent from Samsung tablet.

Re: Have I lost the bow thruster prop ?
John Clark
Hi Nicole, Sounds like you lost the prop. Same thing happened to me in St Thomas while turning 180 degrees in a tight marina. If you have the bow thruster kit and calm water you can remove the lower unit and replace the prop in about an hour. Quicker after you figure out how to do it. I replaced ours at anchor with no hiccups. Always carry a spare...an Amel spare not the knock off copies. If the water is clear you should be able to see the prop when it is deployed....
