Re: Onan MDKD 6.5kW genset exhaust elbow
Karen Smith
Mark,
Based on your hull number, and the pictures of your exhaust elbow, I am guessing you have one of the newer, bigger gensets. I think that one is available as an OEM for ~$500 Ours (from a 6.5kW MDKD) looks rather different, the flange is basically the entire back end of the exhaust manifold, and incorporates the line carrying coolant to the raw water heat exchanger.

I saw your post and thought I should have a spare base as they do tend to break. Sooo I ordered one from Amazon. I left my office to go to kimberlite and looked in my pump locker area for something else and lo and behold I have a brand new one in the box. Tomorrow I will have 2. Would you like me to FedEx it to you or shall I return it to Amazon? You can send me an answer to Kimberlite. Fair Winds, Eric Sm 376 Kimberlite

Hello Mark, Please note on NIKIMAT was the Onan MDKAL I don’t know if there is a difference with the MDKD mentioned. I would check the part number. On the MDKAL the exhaust mixing elbow was part: PN 155-3261-02 (E086) and I paid $475 for my spare http://nikimat.com/spare_parts_ONAN_MDKAL_B_Specs_12_volt.html (scroll, almost at the bottom). Re: Electric heads on Supermaramu
I had the same problem Ian. I did a “temporary” fix with a piece of 1/2” Starboard shaped to span the holes where the break is. To complicate matters further, one of the bolts was seized to the mild steel backing plate and I broke the head off trying to get it out. The backing plate is quite a bit below the surface, and drilling it out left a hole that was impossible to rethread. I used a Mr Toggle bolt which leaves a reusable female thread below the old backing plate. It has held up beautifully for ~4 years...we’ll, maybe not aesthetically, but pretty is as pretty does. Re: Onan MDKD 6.5kW genset exhaust elbow
My Onan exhaust manifold looked as on the picture above, blocked with carbon. I cleaned it in place on the Onan a rather uncomfortable tasks. Is there any benefit to remove the manifold? do one get access to the interior to clean out more carbon deposit? Or does it only give a lot of job to remove it looks a bit corroded? first time I loosen the elbow,, one of the bolts holding it broke of and I had some job to get it out, do not fancy that kind of job very much

Re: Ground strap in bilge
Hello all,
We used the copper ground trap from the company Druseidt in Remscheid, Germany. It costs around EUR 45 and it is protected by a PVC overmoulding and the copper strap ends strengthened with copper shells (see attached pic).
My last order is also attached if someone would like to order.

Thanks for supplying the details of metelec. We are keen to replace our strap. Are you able to supply the dimensions and drawing that you forwarded to metelec when you had your copper strap manufactured.

Re: Fuel tank
sbmesasailor
Hi Tom, I also suspected a leak in my fuel tank but after removal to the passage area, I determined it was only the inspection plate leaking. If you can move it to the passage way and support it, check to see if it still leaks when only partially full (below the inspection plate). It's a pain to empty and then partially fill and then empty again, but it beats removing it. Dennis Johns Libertad Maramu #121

Re: Main furler and furler gear box

Paul,
Lot's of good information on the main furler in this thread: https://amelyachtowners.groups.io/g/main/topic/29770769#43884 and in this Photo Album: https://amelyachtowners.groups.io/g/main/album?id=84576 My furler was completely seized up so I just completely overhauled it. My gearbox, however, appeared to be fine so I just re-greased it and re-installed it. Mark -- Mark McGovern SM #440 Cara Deale, MD USA

Did the holes align when you changed out the old style Jabsco toilet base for the new one.
Also, what is the purpose of the inspection hole?

I have the same issue, one of the heads bases I manage to salvage by adding very large washers of aluminium, but the other one is probably to much work to fox, so I thinking of Buying a new Jabsco. I put in an inspection hatch to get access under. see photo Paul on SY Kerpa AM#259

I am sitting south of Barcelona. One group member put me onto a German supplier, a former AMEL owner is trying to source it out of Britain and I have been told AMEL does still have them. Glad I joined this group. And Bill I agree that the original are way too thin.

This is the one and only time that I will say that the Amel OEM part is not the best part.
Amel uses a thin copper foil for the bonding strap inside the gray water bilge. In terms of electrical conductivity, it is perfect. In terms of durability it is not good enough. The gray PVC float switch tube sits on top of the copper foil and will wear through the copper foil in a few years. If you buy the Amel OEM copper foil, I suggest you buy 2 because you will likely need to replace it again in a few years. Best,
