Re: Freshwater pump
James Cromie
Eric - I have the Sureflo Aqua King II on my boat - It was actually installed by the previous owner. So, for around 5 - 6 yrs, I have not had any problems with respect to leaks at fittings, etc. (I leave the water pump on all the time while I’m on the boat. It is a good pump, I’m happy with its performance, and I keep a spare. You can adjust the demand sensitivity on it, though I’ve never changed it from the factory setting.

Places to winter in Scotland
Joerg Esdorn
I'm planning to cruise the West Coast of Scotland next season and am wondering whether there are good places to leave the boat for the following winter. Any help would be much appreciated.

The MDKAL pretty much happened on the Millenium edition as an evolution of the previous ONAN MDKD version. I think the last 35 SM 53 had the MDKAV but Olivier would probably know for sure. It might have been the last 50. Forgot to write it down… Joel

Karen,
That sure is much different than the elbow on my Onan MDKAV 7kW. Mine looks much more like the one from Nikimat's MDKAL. If you do end up replacing yours with a new one, let me know. I will happily take the old one off your hands to make a jig and will give you a brand new one in return as a spare/replacement. -- Mark McGovern SM #440 Cara Deale, MD USA

Re: Freshwater pump
Parmax 4 24v 40psi has performed perfectly for us for 5+ years now. I think the previous owner had a 25psi model in there when we took over the boat and it was OK, but the 40psi has plenty of reserve for two showers concurrently.

Re: Headsail furler issues
That's interesting, Adam.
On the SN the wires make "home runs" to the motors (furler or windlass) with no splice in a junction box, a far better arrangement (and typically "code"). When you redo this can you run a single wire from the solenoid to the motor, just using the junction box as an intermediate place to pull the single wires through, without putting in splices? I think that would give a far better installation. Craig

Dear Ross, I’m in Seychelles at the moment and don’t have the dimensions on my system here. Bill Rouse uploaded the a file with dimensions and pictures. If you contact him directly he will be able to assist. We found that his solution with the thicker copper bar was robust and worked well. Metelec delivered the bar bent and drilled as specified. We drilled the holes for connection wires once the copper bar was installed. Regards Mike & Peta Solitude SM2K 461 Get Outlook for iOS

Re: Headsail furler issues
Adam Body
An update on the headsail furler. The problem was a burnt out wire. The wire in question carried the current from one (FOC in) of the four solenoids (two for the FOC/Jib, two for the anchor winch) located in the forward port locker of the forward berth. The wire passes through conduits forward to the port bow deck compartment where there is a junction box. This is where the wire was burnt out. The insulation on the wire was cracked and the copper wires had corroded and gradually broke down as the remaining wires were required to carry the current, until they simply burnt out. Hopefully this experience will be helpful to others.

Hi Eric, We've had good luck with the Jabsco Parmax Plus 4. 24v. $140. Good pressure won't strain the plumbing. Chuck Joy #388

I was thinking of changing out my original fresh water pump for a Sureflo Aqua King.My only concern is that the shutoff pressure is 55 PSI, 3.8 Bar.It is an on demand pump and puts out 18 liters per minute. Has anyone installed this pump ? The pressure can be reduced however, I do not know how low it will go. Fair Winds, Eric SM 376 Kimberlite

Mark,
Based on your hull number, and the pictures of your exhaust elbow, I am guessing you have one of the newer, bigger gensets. I think that one is available as an OEM for ~$500 Ours (from a 6.5kW MDKD) looks rather different, the flange is basically the entire back end of the exhaust manifold, and incorporates the line carrying coolant to the raw water heat exchanger.

I saw your post and thought I should have a spare base as they do tend to break. Sooo I ordered one from Amazon. I left my office to go to kimberlite and looked in my pump locker area for something else and lo and behold I have a brand new one in the box. Tomorrow I will have 2. Would you like me to FedEx it to you or shall I return it to Amazon? You can send me an answer to Kimberlite. Fair Winds, Eric Sm 376 Kimberlite

Hello Mark, Please note on NIKIMAT was the Onan MDKAL I don’t know if there is a difference with the MDKD mentioned. I would check the part number. On the MDKAL the exhaust mixing elbow was part: PN 155-3261-02 (E086) and I paid $475 for my spare http://nikimat.com/spare_parts_ONAN_MDKAL_B_Specs_12_volt.html (scroll, almost at the bottom). Sincerely, Alexandre

Karen, I stand corrected! It looks like that there is a small water jacket in the Onan Exhaust elbow after all. Here is a picture that I found looking down the the back side of one on Alex from Nikimat's website: http://www.nikimat.com/parts_for_sale/onan_155_3261_02_mixer_elbow_exhaust_manifold.html It is a relatively simple part to fabricate. I will take mine off after we winterize the boat in the next few weeks and have a closer look at making a replacement from 316 Stainless. Mark -- Mark McGovern SM #440 Cara Deale, MD USA

Re: Electric heads on Supermaramu
I had the same problem Ian. I did a “temporary” fix with a piece of 1/2” Starboard shaped to span the holes where the break is. To complicate matters further, one of the bolts was seized to the mild steel backing plate and I broke the head off trying to get it out. The backing plate is quite a bit below the surface, and drilling it out left a hole that was impossible to rethread. I used a Mr Toggle bolt which leaves a reusable female thread below the old backing plate. It has held up beautifully for ~4 years...we’ll, maybe not aesthetically, but pretty is as pretty does. The reason for the inspection hatch was to get access to the bolt heads below the surface as one of the holes was "enlarged" and had no thread. But to no good for this time as the hole to fasten the head was down into a hollow beam so no access, but next time it will be easy to attache the new head with the hatch in place. Paul

Re: Onan MDKD 6.5kW genset exhaust elbow
My Onan exhaust manifold looked as on the picture above, blocked with carbon. I cleaned it in place on the Onan a rather uncomfortable tasks. Is there any benefit to remove the manifold? do one get access to the interior to clean out more carbon deposit? Or does it only give a lot of job to remove it looks a bit corroded? first time I loosen the elbow,, one of the bolts holding it broke of and I had some job to get it out, do not fancy that kind of job very much
