I have installed a few of the PSS dripless units made by PYI on customer boats. They are pretty well designed but I am going to stay with the original Amel installed Bronze packing gland which is a design that has served me well over 40 years of boating. True in theory the dripless glands can save you a little maintenance time as compared to the original packing gland but if you have the right wrenches, keep the gland clean and greased it isn’t much. The problem I see with the dripless designs that I am familiar with is that they are attached to the shaft log with a quite thin rubber bellows that does not seem to be reinforced with any fabric. The bellows shape provides a small amount of pressure to keep the bearing that seals out the water. Even something lightweight like the end of a mop handle can disturb the bellows and cause leakage. Also you can have salt deposits build up if the dripless unit sits for a long time that can prevent the unit from sealing after turning the shaft. I have had this happen on a customers boat, thankfully I always check the stuffing box or in this case the PSS gland which was dripping profusely after running the engine. Cleaning the sealing surfaces corrected the problem but this is not IMO a plug and play device that does not need to be watched carefully. The proper hose used to connect the bronze packing gland by comparison to the light bellows is perhaps 20X the thickness and well reinforced so much much stronger. A packing gland that has not been tightened often enough might drip a bit of water but if the bellows of a dripless fails completely there can be very significant ingress of water into the boat that is pretty much determined by the clearance between the shaft and the shaft log since there is nothing else keeping it out. A big upgrade to the old bronze packing gland is to use the really good white teflon packing which lasts much longer than the original flax material. With the Teflon packing you can almost end up with a dripless, especially with the addition of the grease injection. I am not familiar with the Las Drop that was suggested to you but it certainly sounds like an interesting design. Best of luck in making the best decision for your boat. James SV Sueno Maramu #220

Re: Super Maramu vs. Super Maramu 2000
There isn't a simple answer because some of the features of the SM2k were introduced before the SM2k, and later SM2ks had some additional changes and features. Several years ago, I spent considerable time and effort in an attempt to answer your question and found it is impossible to answer, especially if you need to be 100% accurate and complete to the level of component install locations. You will find with each attempt to accomplish this, there will be someone, correctly stating, yes, but you didn't list..... If you are looking to buy a SM, the SM2k will be your best choice, however, if your budget limits selecting the SM2k, the SM is a good solution. Like Dan said, look at some. Bill,
Thanks for the info. I was there this afternoon. We have a charger that is wet cell only, and Caraibe has only two wet cell types available in quantities of 12. They have a Trojan 31XHS at 130AH (20hour test) for 360 Euros, and the Banner 100 AH at 225 Euros. The Banner inspires no confidenceand based on name recognition, they could not give me a model number, only the 100 AH. I'm not even sure if that's the 20 hour test or the 100 hour test. The Trojan is available in the US at half the price, but that doesn't really matter, just a reality reference. Maybe they're even cheaper on the moon. I think we're going to get 8 of the Trojans, they equal 12 of the Banners in AH's at only a small premium, and they have a quality reputation that will make me sleep well at night. Re: Super Maramu vs. Super Maramu 2000
Honestly Staten, just go look at the boats and decide what is important to you! Other people's opinions will be all over the place based on goals, preferences and budget. The SM is newer, bigger and has more amenities and storage... Both will take you safely around the world. What are you looking for in a boat? Best, Daniel Carlson on sv BeBe, SM#387

I have no qualms endorsing the PSS dripless shaft seal as I have had one on my Newport 41 for 10 yrs, with no problems at all. I inspect it frequently and have seen no actual wear and only slight stiffening in the bellows after 8 years prompting a replacement at our last haul out. They re not terribly expensive so a more frequent replacement schedule is not too onerous. Just my 2 cents. Dave Bruce Liesse SN006

Re: Dripless shaft seal
The PSS only sank one boat I’m aware of.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
Another, close friend, almost lost his boat, when the PSS bellows hose failed, 600 miles from shore. He was able to wrap stuff around the bellows to slow the leak to something manageable by the bilge pump, but he could not run his motor. He yanked the PSS off as soon as he reached land. I’ve had success with the Lasdrop Gen II. It uses a conventional shaft log hose, and has an internal cutlass bearing to maintain concentricity of the seals. Their service kit is only two lip seals, that need replacement at 5-7 year intervals. When those go, it’s a slight drip, not torrent of water. Less than $20 for the seals. We’ve had our Lasdrop for 10 years, replaced seals once. I’m installing one on our new Amel 50 which comes with a PSS. I will replace it with the Lasdrop at our first haulout. It will be for sale then...... ~~~⛵️~~~Matt

A54 VHF antenna Make/Model
Sv Garulfo
Hello could anyone confirm the brand/model of the VHF antenna originally fitted by Amel on the 54? (we have asked them and they could not confirm) I have noted that Scott has replaced his with a Shakespeare 5215, and wanted to know if there were any alternatives. Thanks Regards Soraya Garulfo A54-122 Marquesas, French Polynesia

Re: A54 fridge circulation pump and a New Source for Marco Pumps
Sv Garulfo
Hello, Just wanted to provide feedback on our order of the marco up2-p from the following website www.marco-pumps.com. (Mate-USA doesn't deliver outside USA/Canada). Overall very pleased. Delivery is indeed 15USD/EUR worldwide, dispatch within 24h of order, and customer service available via whatsapp!!. (the maintenance kit was unavailable and required 2-3 extra days) Our parcel arrived to Tahiti - French polynesia - 5 working days after the order. Only reporting now as it then had to clear through customs and be forwarded further within french Polynesia etc. Not yet installed, but a couple of observations : - we were first surprised that the pump is significantly smaller than the jabsco one, fits in your hand. - we had to get different connectors to fit to existing hoses. The diagram on the pump documentation doesn't show the thread one side of the connector, and the 1/2" barb connection doesn't fit the existing setup. We will provide further feedback once installed and running. PS: thanks to Bill for sharing the discount code Best, Soraya GARULFO A54-122 Marquesas, French Polynesia

Re: Martinique- Good store for 12v batteries?
I delivered a catamaran from Le Marin Caraibes Marine to Ft Lauderdale in 2016.
the boat was OK but needed lots of details, stove, fuel jugs, a battery, hoses, light bulbs, oil and fuel filters. etc. I loaded up with the fantastic food available in Martinique - French imports at low prices. I repaired, jury-rigged, secured the boat as much as I could at the marina, then sailed to St Martin where I purchased everything needed easily, and far cheaper. It was possibly risky but the weather and conditions were all in my favor. I love Martinique. Le Marin is a fantastique place to see lots of Amels Richard Vicem 58 "Songbird" Branford, CT

Dripless shaft seal
Hello all. I plan to have my cutlass bearing replaced soon and want to use the opportunity to install a dripless shaft seal. I have a 1985 Mango. Looking at both the PSS and Tides systems. Anyone have experience either ? My mechanic is saying he recommends the tides as you can have a spare seal carrier installed and not need to pull the shaft when it needs replacing or leaks. I have a recommendation for the PSS from Dave (another Mango owner)....thoughts?

There were no good options for purchasing batteries in Le Marin, Martinique when I purchased my boat back in June 2017. Things may have changed since then and others might have some more current advice for you but I paid roughly double the price for no-name starter battery in Martinique than I would have paid for a name brand starter battery in the USA. Let us know what you find!

Re: SM- Yanmar Ignition module?
Dan this is a relay that is closed on one side by the Yanmar ignition when the key is turned on (2 wires 12 volt). This 12 volt side closes upon ignition and also closes the other side of the relay switching a positive 24 volt "excite" circuit for the alternator. With this info and the stamped info on the relay should help you determine which wire goes where. BTW, you have a spare relay. Also, the 24 alternator will self-excite at about 1800-2000 rpm, and once self-excited will stay excited.
