Re: Martinique- Good store for 12v batteries?
I delivered a catamaran from Le Marin Caraibes Marine to Ft Lauderdale in 2016.
the boat was OK but needed lots of details, stove, fuel jugs, a battery, hoses, light bulbs, oil and fuel filters. etc. I loaded up with the fantastic food available in Martinique - French imports at low prices. I repaired, jury-rigged, secured the boat as much as I could at the marina, then sailed to St Martin where I purchased everything needed easily, and far cheaper. It was possibly risky but the weather and conditions were all in my favor. I love Martinique. Le Marin is a fantastique place to see lots of Amels Richard Vicem 58 "Songbird" Branford, CT

Dripless shaft seal
Hello all. I plan to have my cutlass bearing replaced soon and want to use the opportunity to install a dripless shaft seal. I have a 1985 Mango. Looking at both the PSS and Tides systems. Anyone have experience either ? My mechanic is saying he recommends the tides as you can have a spare seal carrier installed and not need to pull the shaft when it needs replacing or leaks. I have a recommendation for the PSS from Dave (another Mango owner)....thoughts?

Mark McGovern
There were no good options for purchasing batteries in Le Marin, Martinique when I purchased my boat back in June 2017. Things may have changed since then and others might have some more current advice for you but I paid roughly double the price for no-name starter battery in Martinique than I would have paid for a name brand starter battery in the USA. Let us know what you find!

Re: SM- Yanmar Ignition module?
Thanks Bill, I found the spare and from which I could figure out the wiring. I just couldn't see the markings on the installed relay on the engine to figure it out. Thanks and regards, Daniel Carlson on sv BeBe, SM#387, Shelter Bay Marina

Re: SM- Yanmar Ignition module?
Dan this is a relay that is closed on one side by the Yanmar ignition when the key is turned on (2 wires 12 volt). This 12 volt side closes upon ignition and also closes the other side of the relay switching a positive 24 volt "excite" circuit for the alternator. With this info and the stamped info on the relay should help you determine which wire goes where. BTW, you have a spare relay. Also, the 24 alternator will self-excite at about 1800-2000 rpm, and once self-excited will stay excited. SM- Yanmar Ignition module?
Hi SM-Yanmar owners: I changed the fuel filter recently and knocked loose the red (24v) wire that goes from the 24v alternator positive post into the small module that is attached to the engine between the fuel filter and the engine stop solenoid (?). The white ignition wire to the alternator also comes from this module. It has five spade connectors and only four are used. It looks like it came off of the rear most spade. Also, if it contacts the open center spade the red alternator warning light on the 24 volt panel comes on. Can anyone confirm which spade this red wire should be attached to? And for my learning; it would be great to know a bit more about how this module functions. I'm guessing or vaguely recalling that it uses some other signal like oil pressure to switch on the the ignition signal to the alternator? Thanks and regards, Daniel and Lori Carlson on sv BeBe, SM#387, at Shelter Bay Marina

If you look carefully on the back of the top rack I think that you will find that your boat actually has two grease nipples on the steering system, or at least mine does. I missed the second one myself on the first grease run. I can tell that grease is getting on to the racks since it changes the sound and the feel slightly. While it is certainly easy to pump some fresh grease in I am thinking that it would be a good idea for me to take everything apart and clean out any abrasive material that might be in the old grease. Fingers crossed that everything looks good! Best, James Maramu #220

Re: Companion way for removal
Alan Grayson
Hey mate, I did not remove the slide, I just removed the plywood at the back to allow it to slide up to the dodger. I masked off the wood on either side before raising the slide to work on it.
I removed all the top layer of the plywood then sanded with 80 grit. One coat of high build epoxy primer then a sand with 220 grit. I was not happy with the coverage so I did it again, then 2 coats of awlgrip Nordic white straight
off the shelf. It was close enough for the 3 meter rule. If it looks good from 3 meters then your done. I do have a couple of runs so I would like to do another coat but I’m in no rush.
All done with a brush and foam brush.
We are heading to St Anne for a few days of R&R and zero dollar days after 2 very hectic days.
Rigging went well I had it very close they only adjusted the main uppers, the mizzen uppers and the mizzen backstays.
Got everything on my list ticked off.
Alan

I came by this morning to have a look at your companionway, and it looks great. Could you give some more information on your proceedure? Did you remove the door, or just raise it to the Dodger? If the door wasn't removed, were you able to mask off the wood channel the door slides in, or how did you protect the unpained frame? Or did you just paint to the edge of the frame? What kind of epoxy filler did you use? Just one coat? Was it applied by brush? Thanks! Duane Wanderer, SM#477

Paul, I recently had an intermittent one way bow thruster issue and it was being caused by the switch under the joystick beginning to fail. On the SM it is pretty easy to lift the black bow thruster direction panel and have a look at the switch.
A replacement joystick 🕹 switch did the trick.
