Great advice.

Exactly what we do, except for selling it later. We let our spare go with the boat when we sold it. We found all of the components, used, but serviceable, on line.... ~~~⛵️~~~Matt

Re: Recommentation for Sharki second autopilot
There are 5 components to your Raymarine autopilot system: Control Head Course Computer Drive Unit Fluxgate Compass Rudder Reference A failure of any component can cause the system to fail. Individual components are easy and fast to install. Maybe you should consider having one of each of the components ready to go. You will likely have to search for a used Control Head and Computer, and can probably find the other components in new condition. The used components can probably always be sold again for what you will pay for them. What I suggest is like "renting" a backup system at zero cost. Recommentation for Sharki second autopilot
Dear all,
hope everyone did have a great Chrismas and will have a good start into 2020. We are starting to prepare our Sharki for the long passage from Europe to the Caribbean. Up to now we have sailed her in the Netherlands and Baltic sea and the installed Autohelm ST6000 autopilot worked quite well. But crossing an ocean, I think we should have a second backup system. Especially as we are a small crew of just two persons. I know that Amel did install on the bigger models two autopilots, but I have never seen a second autopilot installed on a Sharki. The space in the aft cabin next to the rudder quadrat is quite limited. Even when a compact drive unit Like the Jefa DD15 may fit in, I am not sure whether it will work smoothly. We also thought about wind pilots, but also not sure there as mizzen boom seems to long and may hit the wind vane. Would be great to get some input from other Sharki owers Best regards, Volker S/Y MickMoon - Sharki #176

Re: Water in far forward cubby in V berth
Not that much of a long shot. Bill was on my boat in October and spotted the same thing. Once I re-sealed the cable from the Genoa furler my forward lockers dried right up. Amazing how much water can leak down that cable!

Re: Water in far forward cubby in V berth
It could be the hatch seals on the port bow locker.... if you get water over the bow and the hatch seals are leaking, the water will wick down the security rope ans ewnd up on the wall of that small internal locker.

Thanks James and Bill. I’ll see where that cable goes and check it out. James, I’d hoped you’d have a magic potion that would take the salt right out. Maybe potatoes or rice? :-)

Kent, Sorry to hear about the wet carpet and mildew problem. Since the carpet is soaked with salt water, you must remove the salt or else the carpet will stay forever damp since salt can pull moisture out of the air. Rinse with fresh water as best you can. Suck out as much of the water as possible with a wet/dry vacuum then dry the carpet with a dehumidifier and fans. I would probably use a mild bleach solution to kill the mold and of course rinse everything that the bleach was applied to with fresh water since the bleach is corrosive. Best of luck. Water in far forward cubby in V berth
Hi everyone, hope you are all having a great holiday and sailing season.
we have just discovered very damp carpeting in the open storage space all the way forward on the port side of the V Berth (next to the shelves over the bow thruster). The water is mostly on the forward wall shared by the port bow locker (where the security rope comes thru to cleat the locker hatch down.) It is salty to taste. The bow locker is dry (for the first time in two years since I replaced the seals ;-)> ). Needless to say the mildew is already starting to grow. Other than we vacuuming the carpet as best I can, and treating for mold, would you do anything else to the carpeting? Any ideas where this water might be getting in? Thanks for any thoughts. Paul, I should have said, to first look for a loose or corroded connection. CorrosionX is your friend. --

If I had this problem, I would check for 220VAC at the heating element terminals. If you have 220VAC at the terminals, it is the heating element, which is not difficult to change on a 54 Isotemp Basic. It is also the most common failure with a life of 6-12 years, depending on use. Best,

Re: Water heater troubleshooting
Mohammad Shirloo
Hi Paul;
We had the same issue December 2016 while winter sailing in Greece (Not a great idea by the way). We decided to change the entire unit due to age and other potential problems that could pop up later. It was a 4 hour job, but ended up with a new unit that should be trouble free for years. There were signs of corrosion in other parts in the tank, but the tank itself seemed to be in fair shape. The new tank also has a mixing valve that allows cold water to be mixed in at the outlet of the water heater preventing scalding hot water to be delivered to the faucets. It also makes the water heater more efficient by not filling the water supply line with max temperature hot water, every time you turn on the hot water at the faucet.
Happy Sailing;

Hi All,
My hot water heater has stopped heating the water. I’m guessing its either the thermostat or the heating element. Would anyone be able to give me a pointer as to how best to find out which one is at fault? The heater is an Isotemp Basic type 40HXCV.

I you haven't yet, start applying a penetrating product like PB Blaster to it every day and crank the screw in both directions to help the product penetrate. Heating the screw with a torch, letting it cool and repeating will help break the rusted parts apart too.
