A54 engine anti siphon vent

Hi all,

Over the few years we have owned Garulfo, we came to notice that the anti siphon vent for the engine that exits in the starboard cockpit drain hole was a good tell tale of a restriction in the raw water line: 

when everything is clear (intake thru hull, vetus strainer, transmission heat exchanger, impeller, etc), the stream of water out of the vent line into the drain is continuous and silent,

when the flow is restricted, the initial spurting of water and exhaust gaz continues to the point of becoming annoying and I know i need to go and clean something. After clearing the line, the flow is back to normal. 


Do other A54 owners share the same experience? Do my conclusions make sense, or is it some kind of coincidence?

Alan, Thanks for confirming that the toilet should be bonded. My boat did not come with a leak detention device ,wish it had. While eroding zincs is normal ,mine are eroding in about 1/3 the time that is normal. I now believe it is probably the result of the head not being bonded.

Yes, you should have 3 wires to the motor +24, -24 and bonding (green/yellow)
We have a leak detection switch in the companion way.....not sure if you have that...it can tell you if you have a leak from -ve or +ve to the bonding.
When we have had a leak -ve to bonding, it has always been the head motor that has caused it....proven by disconnecting the bonding wire at the motor, the indicated leak goes away.
Zincs eroding is normal - they should be, as the least noble metal connected to the bonding circuit - if they're not, then you have an issue, as perhaps there is a break in the bonding cct and the zincs are no longer connected....rudder quadrant connection should be checked frequently to ensure that connection si good, if not, it compromises all the bonding on the boat.

any one know the exact part number for the outhaul gear box.  I ordered one from drive tech as spare and when trying to put the motor on, the bolts for the motor do not align with the gearbox.  spacing is all wrong.

Hello Alex, I believe you are referring to my D3-110 failure. When I experienced my water ingest issue, it was after a fairly calm trip up from Florida to the Chesapeake Bay. I ran the engine quite a bit, as I recall the wind was not great, but that was now more than 4 years ago, so I cannot remember all the details of what happened.

I understand exactly what you are suggesting though, in that water could potentially enter into the anti-siphon loop if un-expelled water collected in the cockpit. But I can say for sure in my case, there was no water in the cockpit from waves. And in my situation, I am really certain that water did not get forced into the exhaust loop on a starboard tack. I have seen the flapper that Amel installed first hand, and it looked OK to me (it is really kind of a tube), so again I think my issue was that the engine was not expelling the water through the muffler. I surmise that it was "back-washing" if you will into the exhaust manifold and hence entering the cylinders in spurts - not enough to flood and lock the engine, but enough to seize the valves and kill it once it sat for a week.

Dave, My boat did not come with electric heads ,so there was no bonding wires going to the head. I realize zincs do erode over time ,but mine are eroding at an accelerated  rate I believe ,which could indicate a stray leak ,finding it is the problem.

Patrick, zincs that are eroding is a good thing.  That means they are providing protection as they are supposed to erode.  It's when corrosion/erosion shows up elsewhere (for example, a pump impeller) that you have a problem.  That means that the pump is not protected by the sacrificial anode.  As for the macerator pump on your heads, I thought those motors were already bonded.  Seems to me I saw a bonding wire on mine, although I'm not on my boat right now.

Hi Bill, all this conversation is moving me to do a first time look at the exhaust flap. I guess the larger stainless tube is separated from  the hull and the exhaust hose to access it, or perhaps the hose can be left in place and the unit flexed back???

I would add a comment regarding the variety of systems being suggested as "improvements" to the exhaust system.

Henri in his inimitable fashion has thought it all through, considered the potential failure of all the alternatives, and decided the most bullet proof system was the start the motor for a few minutes every day rule.

This has the significant added benefit for boats on extended passages of ensuring the engine is in perfect starting order at all times. A spine tingler is to find the motor wont start in an emergency situation. With over 50,000 ocean miles under my belt on Ocean Pearl  I consider it an absolute that the engine and gen set is started daily to ensure all systems are go at all times. It is one of those rules that will keep you alive when you really need it.

So my thoughts: keep or return your system to the Amel standard and follow the advice from Amel

I may be wrong on some of this so if anyone has any other input please share.

Also... I'm still searching for any information on the rubber anti-return flap at the end of the exhaust line near the through hull. Has anyone bought, replaced, or fabricated something like this for their Amel?
