Replacement windscreens
Paul Dowd and Sharon Brown
I had new wind screens made at Driftwood in Clarks Court Bay, Grenada – photo attached. The quality seems very good and they fit perfectly. They are slightly darker than the originals. They di initially quote me USD480 for the pair, but then said it took a lot longer to make them and the cost increased to 895, but in the end a compromise was made at 620.

Gas struts for windscreens
Paul Dowd and Sharon Brown
Hi all,
I would greatly appreciate if someone could tell me where in the USA I can order replacement gas struts for the Amel 54 windscreens. I was about to go with a company called Ace Controls but it turned out there is an 8 week lead time for the stainless version.

Re: Insurance in Europe
I think the topic of insurance is a constantly changing beast, and needs to be reviewed, periodically. Very interesting comments from the group!

Jer,
I would be interested in what you replaced the Sonic Speed with. My transducers no longer work and B&G no longer support this.

Hello Jeremy, Congratulations on your purchase! We wish you and your wife all the best on your new adventure. I don't know if your sonic speed sensor still works. If so I can relieve that burden of you. Please let me know. Best regards, Chuck and Kim Joy #388 St. Martin

Re: Insurance in Europe
Michael & Robyn
Hi Mark,
we had been with Pantaenius US since 2016 but had to change for the same reasons Mark & Debbie from Brassring described. Pantaenius US only offered Geico as underwriter. We looked into Boat US / Geico and Yachtinsure but their policy is NOT an "all risk". There was als a requirement for a US address for a foreign (none US) flagged vessel. We decided to go with Y Yacht Insurance originally in the UK but for Brexit they opened up a European office in France. Hurricane season is 1st June to 1st November and we have to be north of 36°N, e.g.: Chesapeake. Their policy is readable and one can understand it without a degree in law science. -- Michael & Robyn SY RIPPLE SM2K # 417

Standoffs are at least 10 cms at both top and bottom. And both the manufacturer of the antenna and a SSB expert said it’s ok. I only try to transmit while at anchor. Thanks guys! Cheers. Joerg

Hi Volker, I was on a voyage from Grenada to Panama when the oil in the reservoir became milky in colour. I had a long way to go so I just minimised engine use and Hauled out when I got to Colon at the Western end of the canal. No trouble in the 10 years since. I change the seals and wearing bearing at each 2 year haulout Regards Danny SM 299 Ocean Pearl

Re: SSB Ground
Joerg, In my experience with SSB, Matt is exactly correct about multiple nearby masts. Also, I looked closely at your photo. It is my understanding that a marine 4" stand-off" antenna mount must be used to hold the SSB antenna a minimum of 4" from other metal parts. In the Amel SM and 54, Amel used these to "stand-off" from the life rail. I believe I see the stand-off near the top of the Simpson Davits. I also note two things:

Re: SSB Ground
One other big issue is trying to transmit from a marina. All the masts adversely affect transmission. You’ll have to leave the marina to get an accurate assessment .

Re: SSB Ground
Joerg Esdorn
Thank you, Herbert. I will clean the dynaplates next. I have had the tuner and the transmitter tested twice and I do hear the tuner clicking. My antenna is installed next to the davits but I asked the manufacturer of the antenna about that and they said it was fine. I will try to swing the mizzen boom away, though.
Following the link to the SSB goodies you sent, I see the SSB grounding paint. Someone told me to paint the bottom of the Lazarette with that paint and connect it to the tuner with copper tape. Theoretically this should work but has anyone tried it?

Amel Euros 41 - Autopilot, what autopilot! Anyone recognise these parts please?
Andrew Eaves <andyeaves@...>
Hi all
I have disconnected the chain to the shaft of the steering wheel firstly. 1. Is this standard Amel autopilot do you know? 2. What/where was the control unit/compass bumpf as I presume it isn't built into the motor part?? 3. Is this circuit board specifically for the autopilot or does it have other functionality? 4. I was told today by the original owner, he thinks you may be able to hook up some kind of Raymarine control box to this motor. Does anyone know if that or anything else is possible? I'm not going to try and reinstate whatever the original control unit was, wherever that is :) Thank all.
