Adding Air Conditioning to '94 SM #117

Hey, Friends,
I found a 'sponsor' who wants me to add air conditioning to Intention. Is this completely insane? I couldn't find anyone in the forum who's done it. Seems like it would be easier to buy a new boat! At first blush, it looks like I need to do the following: - Buy three AC/Heater units, aft, cabin and forward compartments, cause the heater units that are currently installed there will be replaced - Drill six holes in the hull and add through-hulls and valves, hose to connect the units, Do other boats pull sea water from another inlet like the toilet or something? - what about seawater pumps? Are they needed? What about sea strainers? - Buy 90˚ hard-plastic pipes that go on the end of the units - buy some kinda ducting to feed the cool air into a vent somehow - Build mounting plates and securing bolts to keep the units in place - Figure out how to get 220v to the units - Run control wire up to a thermostat and figure out how to mount that thing. - Add a switch to the 220v control panel that somehow turns off all three units?! Anyone done this? Would you recommend I fake a major injury instead of take this on? -- Steve Bode Capt. We’re in the middle of installing the seals now, and searched high and low for his prior post. For those who follow and want to see it, it’s located here and does indeed show the seals installed.

This is very interesting since the service disconnect switch looks very similar to the Ecans Soderep S190 installed on my Maramu. I recently ordered a replacement from Amel for my original engine disconnect switch that looks identical to my original switch. I was having engine starting problems that I traced to an excessive voltage drop at the engine disconnect switch. Not having a spare aboard at the time, I opened up the switch expecting to find burned contacts but actually they are in almost perfect shape. The problem stemmed from the phenolic breaking around the bearing surface supporting the handle shaft which caused the contacts to sometimes not line up properly. Some epoxy restored the function of the switch and we used it without trouble for the rest of last season. I am mentioning this because I have read that others have had problems from these switches at times and at least in my case the issue was repairable and the switch is not hard to open. I will of course now install the new switch and keep the old one as a spare. It would be great if I could install a third switch like this for just the bow thruster loads. Would you by chance know the exact model of the switch shown in your photo? I would also be interested to know either the wattage/horsepower rating of the Amel 54 bow thruster to estimate the amperage draw to compare to mine. My Maramu has the bow thruster wired directly to the batteries which means that regardless of the switch position the circuit is hot. I would very much like to install a reliable service disconnect switch along with a fuse to better protect this circuit. I considered the S190 but was concerned about the 250-300 Amp continuous rating shown by the manufacturer. The peak load of this switch is however 10X higher so maybe it is sufficient due to the short duration of use? Would anyone know if this model switch would be sufficient for the approximate 4-500 amps that my bow thruster should draw at 12V? I am bringing a clamp meter to the boat soon to get a more accurate measurement. Thanks, James

Hi Scott, On our 54 only the shore-chargers are directly connected to the batteries. Everything else is routed via the switch, excluding the battery monitor on the 24 volt panel.

Scott, Yes, in other 54s there is are 24v cables +/- coming from the main switch. In this photo of an unmodified Amel 54 the positive cable from the switch to the Bow Thruster box in the bow is a black cable. You can barely see it. It is under the 110 A Alternator red cable. I believe that some of the 54 switches are wired differently. Please let me know if the photo below agrees with yours.

As the title suggests, does the a54, wired as amel intended, place the bow thruster power wires directly to the battery or are those cables connected through the main battery switches?

I obtained my rub rail insert (I call it "scupper") from SAV in Dec 2017 for repairs Liahona ( Hull # 335) sustained during Hurricanes Irma and Maria. The material, including shipping (air freight) to Puerto Rico was $ 2,686 US. Removal of the original scupper is very quick (easily less than one hour), I wasn't present when they inserted the new scupper but did see it done to Liahona's sister boat, "Cloud Street" (Hull # 333 I believe) done a few weeks after my boat was done. I would estimate that it took two workers about 4 hrs per side to install the new scupper material.
Sorry for thread creep: Following hurricane repairs my hull, boot stripe, rub rail, and toe rail (including all hatch surrounds and hatch areas that were matching color) were painted with multiple coats of epoxy primer followed by multiple coats (5 as I recall) of Awlcraft. It was explained and demonstrated to me that re-gel coating damaged areas would lead to excessive porosity and poor outcome. It was further explained to me that Awlcraft was easier to repair than Awlgrip and that is why it was recommended to me. It looks great and my boat maintenance has decreased since I don't have to wax the toe rail and rub rail every couple of months.
