Hi Michelle, Thank you for the excellent write-up of the work on your C drive. Do you happen to have a version in English? I could not open it to cut out portions to translate. Thanks Fair Winds Eric Amel Super Maramu #376

An easy way to decouple the C drive.
eric freedman
The first photo is how I disassembled the C drive apparatus. The Disk brake hub and the C drive are exactly the same diameter—almost a pres fit.Yours is different.
When you have it apart take the part that connects to a machine shop and have them remove a few thousands from the inside diameter. Being that you do not have a disk brake the tool might or might not need modification. It also might be easier to disconnect the C drive from the attached mechanisms.
The alignment device is a copy of the more intricate one used by Amel. It was not my design. With the disk brake the bolts holding the disk to the coupling could not be removed. I cut them off and replaced them with a piece of threaded rod and nylocks to keep the assembly tight. I just check the nuts every year , so far they are as tight as installed. If you have any more questions please do not hesitate to contact me as I Will be changing out my engine in April and will have even more info. The PDF was from Olivier—
The disk is quite ugly and rusted. When I change out my engine , I am going to have one made of stainless steel. Fair Winds Eric Amel Super Maramu #376

What fits a 40x52x7 TC shaft seal on a SM?
Mike Longcor (SV Trilogy)
Hello all,
I'm going through lots of spare parts onboard... Quick question if anyone knows what a 40x52x7 lip seal might fit on a SuperMaramu? Doesn't seem to match anything related to the bow thruster, C-drive, prop shaft, furling motors, electric winches, etc... unless I'm missing something. Perhaps just a miscellaneous spare, bought in error, etc.. Thanks, Mike Longcor SV Trilogy - SM23 Opua, NZ

Re: SM Prop Shaft Seal direction and Bushing
Mike Longcor (SV Trilogy)
Hi Everyone, Craig and Jose especially,
I'm preparing to service the prop shaft wear bushing and seals. Curious how your seal orientations have worked out. Is the oil in the reservoir staying clean and constant level? Any chance there is now consensus among the community or from Amel on this? I'm planning to follow the "Shaft Bushing and Seals Replacement" procedure posted by Eric and Gary. Haven't had any problems with my C-Drive or the oil. I don't know when it was last serviced but at least 2.5 years, probably more(!). I'm curious to see how they are oriented when I take them out. I'm inclined to reinstall them the same way given the good performance. Does anyone have any new data or current recommendations regarding these three seals? Thanks, Mike Longcor SV Trilogy - SM23 Opua, NZ

You're pretty close with that figure Steve. Yes, it's a big job but not overly complicated. If I can do it, believe me, anyone can. Good luck! Feel free to PM me with any questions. Ian & Margaret S/V Loca Lola II SM153 Bahamas

Hey, Bill & Ian! Wow! This is great! I'm on my way. Here's my first pass at a budget, using online retailers. Figure add 20% for other items. Shipping, too. So, maybe $7,000?
Ian, how far off am I?
Still, looks like a BIG project. Kind Regards, Steve Bode Capt. SV Intention Amel SM #117 (1994) +1 415 710-6659 Mobile/Text/WhatsApp facebook.com/stevebodesanfrancisco svintention.com

Yanmar 4JH3HTE engine for sale
eric freedman
Hi, I am selling my 4JH3HTE Yanmar engine late April. It runs perfectly. There is no damage to the engine. About 6500 hours. Turbo 2 years old as are the injectors nozzles. Burns ½ quart of oil every 24 hours of continuous running.
It will be in St Maarten, however I can ship it anywhere. It will be sold without the alternators. The engine has been completely rewired.
If you are interested in discussing please contact me at kimberlite@... Fair Winds Eric Amel Super Maramu #376

Re: A54 bow thruster directly to battery or through main switches?
James Alton
Arno,

No problem at all, thanks for taking the time to help answer my question about the service disconnect switch on your A54. As you correctly point out my bow thruster is a 12V model so the amp draw at the same power is 2X. I believe my bow thruster motor is only about 4.2KW so the amp draw should be similar to yours. I am bringing a Fluke clamp meter to my boat this winter to see if I can better pin down the draw. I sent an email to the manufacturer of the switch to see if they felt that it would work in my application. I want to be sure that the switch would open in an emergency if there were a short in the bow thruster circuit. I like the wide separation of the contacts of this switch which makes me think that this switch might work in such an emergency so long as the contacts did not weld together! Best, James SV Sueno Maramu #220 I believe that this is the original engine service disconnect switch for my Maramu so 32 years old. This is how the contacts looked before I cleaned them up. If you look carefully at the center of the left hand portion of the switch, there is a hole/bearing that the shaft inserts into a hole. This is where the Phenolic had cracks. This caused the shaft to not center correctly so the contacts probably were not mating perfectly. This could explain the reason that "exercising" the switch can sometimes restore function. The problem in my case was apparently this mechanical issue in the switch rather than being corrosion or burning of the contact surfaces which has been the case on almost every other switch failure I have investigated. To open the switch, I just had to carefully open the tabs that were pressed in on each side.

Ulrich I have the repair kit somewhere on my boat. I plan to replace my counter top. but if I can find the repair kit, I will take a pic and send the info on where to order. It was ordered in the UK. it is a two part epoxy type repair kit. I will get looking for it, Cheers, Randall A-54 #56

Re: rub rail insert
Patrick McAneny
Gary, I don't understand the cost of $2686. for the insert/scupper ,Maud quoted me about $798. Euro . I agree a painted boat is much easier to keep clean and shiny. The paint is not porous like the gelcoat ,thus does not hold stains. I will use your time for labor to install the scuppers to negotiate a better price before submitting to my insurance company.
Thanks,

The material, including shipping (air freight) to Puerto Rico was $,2686 US. Removal of the original scupper is very quick (easily less than one hour), I wasn't present when they inserted the new scupper but did see it done to Liahona's sister boat, "Cloud Street" (Hull # 333 I believe) done a few weeks after my boat was done. I would estimate that it took two workers about 4 hrs per side to install the new scupper material.
Sorry for thread creep: Following hurricane repairs my hull, boot stripe, rub rail, and toe rail (including all hatch surrounds and hatch areas that were matching color) were painted with multiple coats of epoxy primer followed by multiple coats (5 as I recall) of Awlcraft. It was explained and demonstrated to me that re-gel coating damaged areas would lead to excessive porosity and poor outcome. It was further explained to me that Awlcraft was easier to repair than Awlgrip and that is why it was recommended to me. It looks great and my boat maintenance has decreased since I don't have to wax the toe rail and rub rail every couple of months. I choose Awlgrip for my deck-stripe repaint due to it being harder and more abrasion resistant. All the best, Gary S Silver s/v Liahona Amel SM 2000 # 335 Puerto Del Rey Marina, Puerto Rico
