Re: Lock downs on floor boards
I'd also like to hear how SM owners have installed lock-downs on the floor lockers. Thanks Kent and Iris SM 243 Kristy Leaving Georgetown Exumas for T&C, then Martinique in the next 24 hours.

Re: Recommended solar panel brand
Paul,
We have 3 x 250 W solar panels on an arch with Schottky diodes, whether its better with or without I don't know since we installed them from new. We also rarely run the generator except when leaving / arriving in port, lifting the anchor, heating the water, solar takes care of most of our needs. We have 5 year old AGMS (3 banks of 4 x 6v in series with balancers) which are still performing well. Cheers Alan Elyse SM437

Re: Size of main anchor for Super Maramu
Stephen Nicholson
Hello again,
Many thanks for all your valuable comments! One additional question for those people who have upgraded to the 47kg (105 lb) Mantus option on their SM. Does your windlass cope OK with the weight of the 47kg anchor plus anchor chain, or have you had a BIGGER windlass installed to handle the extra weight? Many thanks for your help! Re: Fuel tank cleaning
Ruslan Osmonov
Hi, how do you clean it? On my current boat I open tank every spring and use plastic tube connected to a pump to remove 1-2 gallons until I stop seeing black chunks from the bottom. I do that to avoid filters clogging, even though I have double primaries setup. Preventive measures. I’d like to continue to clean the tanks with Amel as well, knowing that it would reduce my chances of clogging primaries.

Re: Are Amel boats quiet?
Ryan Meador
I agree that SM is a very quiet boat. Essentially no squeaking in big seas and wind, and a tiny bit of thermal expansion/contraction noise. There is one way that the SM makes some noise though, and I feel it needs to be mentioned (there was even a thread about it not long ago): waves slapping against the stern. This is most noticeable when the boat is empty (i.e. new to you). Filling the boat with stuff, especially the stern locker, significantly reduces the noise. You'll get used to it quickly, as well. I don't recall hearing it in a long time, but it was very noticeable the first few days after we bought it. Ryan and Kelly

Thank you all for your comments. This is what I thought and got confirmations from first hands. I knew the build quality is very different, but Lagoon is also in 1M+ range yacht, which made me wander. Thanks for putting my mind at ease 🙂

Scott,
The problem I have is that I use a VSAT which has three thick cables taking up most of the conduit space. I am told that by putting schottky diodes between the panels the loss due to uneven shading across panels is significantly mitigated, although I have not tried it yet, and indeed would be interested to hear from anyone who has. Having said all that, we are extremely pleased with the performance of these panels, and now find that we only need to run either the engine or generator to get hot water! We have 4 year old AGMs.

Paul:
Exactly right. I saw a test where they wired multiple panels parallel and serial and saw that partial shading from booms/sails really dropped output on serially connected panels. I was able to obtain the same results when performing the same experiment. Where do you have your MPPT? I have all six wires running from the arch to two switches (pos/neg) in the starboard side of the lazarette. With the short run and only one panel per pair for this section, I don't need super thick cables. Then I run a single pair of 13mm2 wires to the MPPT located near the boat's main switches. That fit in the conduit with room to spare and I believe the calcs showed very acceptable voltage drop even at the max 960watt output. There is some argument that the higher voltage with serial will turn on the mppt earlier since it requires (battery voltage+5v) to startup, but frankly, I am fine missing out on a few minutes of early morning sun. I'm also thinking that 35-40 volts on the parallel panels might be safer in the event of a catastrophic event. 120-130v DC could hurt. -- Scott 2007 A54 #69 SV Tengah http://www.svtengah.com

Wind Generator/Link10 Wiring
Tim Melbourne
My wind generator is wired straight into house battery terminals, thus bypassing the Link10 multimeter so I cannot see its current generation when it's spinning fast (and producing, putatively, up to 25 amps@24V, ie, half a kw). I want to rewire its negative lead from the minus terminal of the house battery to the upstream side of the Link10 shunt. Currently it's connected to the downstream side of the shunt because via the house batteries negative terminal.
Where is the best place to hook the minus lead into the upstream side of the shunt? Is there a junction box somewhere to which all the house 24V systems connect their minus (-) lead to so that Link10 can see their current use? If so, where is it? Thanks, Tim SV Third Wish SM2K #306

Re: Carrying Tender on Davits while crossing
Joerg Esdorn
Here are some responses to Mohammad's questions:
1. I have a Honda 20HP outboard, which is quite heavy (but the same weight as the 15HP). The boat behaves well with it - no issues. 2. I can plane with 4 people in it but not too much luggage. This was my objective. 3. I don't think I have any options - unless the 2 lockers upfront are an option. One of them is for the gas tank and the other for the anchor. Work well. Maybe it would be nice to have a cleat for the anchor line. 4. No issues. After 3 years of trying to get the dinghy to stop swinging around and the engine throttle taking the load when sailing on starboard tack (because the dinghy slides over when the boat heels), I now have very little movement. I also have 5 cm wide belts as tie downs. 5. Yes, on the 55 the dinghy fits perfectly sideways in front of the traveler and behind the mizzen. I first saw the rounded dinghy stops on the davits of Fortuna II, Paul Brown's boat. I modified them to give a few cm more space between the davits and the dinghy because the strops would otherwise have bottomed out against the davits. If you have different lifting strops, you can have the space reduced which brings the dinghy marginally further up. I hope this helps. Joerg Esdorn A55 Kincsem

Hi Victor,
We have had galvanised chain attached to a stainless anchor for the last 20 years. No signs of corrosion.

I am also in the process of getting a Mantus 105lb. My intention is to keep the current 10mm inox chain with the galvanized new Mantus, but I am concerned with galvanized corrosion. Any experience with this that anyone can share...?
Thanks

Mine is very quiet no squiky sounds even during very uncomfortable passages. only a small sound from the wind screen/doghouse but that is a very minor issue. My friends sailing with us always comment that it is a very quiet boat Paul on sykerpa SM#259
