Hi Karen,

Thanks for doing all the research on this. I’d be very interested in this purchase, but we are way out in Hawaii until the beginning of June when we head for Alaska. With that said, if the manufacturer was able to arrange shipping to Hawaii at a cost that wouldn’t break the bank, I would still be interested. Alternatively, if Hawaii would not work, I could pick it up from my sister in law in Seattle when we arrive there in September. Let me know if you think any of that could possible work.

We need to replace our headlines well.   I think. Going to do white PVC bead board
It will be easy to keep clean.  Probably going to use Velcro and use small pieces and some trim pieces that match the existing wood to cover up the seams.  This way I can take it down and inspect for mold

I’m not sure what headliner was used in the 54 or earlier models of SM’s, Maramu’s, etc., but the headliner in our boat (SM #466) was still available about a year ago. It has a felt like backing. Slightly off topic, but if anyone is interested, at the same time we purchased some of the original blue shower curtain material and had new curtains made. Again that was available as of about a year ago.

Great to hear that you have most likely found the problem. If you still have a flow problem it is likely to be a partial blockage where the water is distributed. If so. I would back connect a hose to flush the circuit.

Strainer air lock

Sailing back from Bermuda last spring , my engine would shut down and I discovered that there was no water in my strainer ,thus the engine had no water and shut down. We were sailing in only moderate to strong conditions ,but never heeled beyond 20 degrees. When I opened the strainer lid water would flow to the top, and I could motor once again. This same thing happened repeatedly ,and had never happened prior to this trip. I made a change to the cooling system in Bermuda, and I want to know if this may have caused this air lock .
Upon starting any boat engine, I have always checked the exhaust for water flow. However on my Amel the exhaust is at water level making it impossible to see if cooling water is flowing. When a couple of owners a while back posted that they had a small hose streaming cooling water into the cockpit confirming flow, I wished I had that set up,Amel must of added this feature to newer models.
So in Bermuda I took off the anti siphon valve off the loop at the top of the hose from the heat exchanger to the exhaust elbow. In place of the valve I ran a small hose to my cockpit scupper to show me water flow. It worked only marginally well ,I surmise most of the water flow never rises to the top of the loop. I figured it still served as a siphon break as it is open to the atmosphere . My question is ,could this have allowed all the water to flow back out of the engine and strainer while heeled over and create an air lock ? Secondly has anyone have a photo of how this system is installed ,I would like to replicate it.

Can somebody help/refer me to a customs broker near BRISBANE/COOMERA familiar with the YACHTS IN TRANSIT procedure. I am getting parts from AMEL and need to clear into AUSTRALIA.

 

In December/January a shipment from NEW CALEDONIA FedEx charged me GST, Duty etc. etc. which I agreed to pay to avoid FedEx returning the parts to NEW CALEDONIA.

When I contacted ABF (AUSTRALIAN BORDER FORCE) last month for my 3 monthly reporting and questioned what happened they confirmed the YACHTS IN TRANSIT system works in AUSTRALIA but I need to use a customs broker for their “bond”.

 

Via a yacht broker in the marina/yard I contacted WALLACE Int. but they are not familiar with the YIT concept and try to convince me that I am not a commercial vessel and therefore YIT does not apply to me.  

 

A reference would be greatly appreciated.

I also have a problem understanding the issue on the furler drainage. The thick black (electrical) cable does go via a ss pipe (if I remember correctly) into the sail/bow locker and on AMELIT the caulking around that cable into the ss pipe was compromised and allowed water into the sail/bow locker. Once we fixed that no more water via that entry into the locker.

 

When I am back on the boat I will check if there is a drain plug on the bottom of the furler.

I replaced both furlers with the EJF’s. Since they use a planetary gear system instead of belts and worm-gears the torque provided by the furler is about twice as high compared to the original MEJ’s at the same power consumption. For me they are working well, When furling in strong winds I can’t hear the motor being stressed at all, it furls in quite smoothly.

I have a hard time understanding the thing Courtney mentions about the cable sleeve also used for draining any water that enters the unit. When you buy the units the sleeve is quite long and I cannot imagine some Italian designer thinks to use it as a drain pathway. It seems more that you must prevent water to enter the sleeve so it cannot reach the unit.

Do make sure you use the electronically controlled Boxtrons in conjunction with the new furlers as they also provide a soft-start to make it easier on the rig.

Do like Bill said and google the instructions for the d square ( I believe) switch. It is not that difficult to properly adjust. If you read the instructions multiple times you should be able to do it. I think there are also some good YouTube videos on how to do it.

More Options for Rub Rail Inserts

Hey group,

 

We have done a little digging into the possibility of US based production options for the rub rail inserts. Seems a good option instead of shipping relatively inexpensive, yet bulky and heavy material across the ocean.

Companies doing custom, short-run rubber extrusions are pretty common in the industry. We contacted a local manufacturer who specializes in things like rub rails for inflatable boats to see if they could produce the Amel rub rail insert in low quantity and at reasonable cost. 

 

The basic answer is, yes they can. They have seen a dimensioned drawing of the insert, and confirmed that they can make it without technical difficulty. It would be made of EDPM, the premier rubber formulation for UV exposure. Not sure about color yet.

 

There isn’t enough information yet to set a hard price, but it looks like the MAXIMUM cost would be $800 per boat, and it could be as little as half that, plus UPS domestic ground shipping.

 

The process would look like this:  If we get enough interest, I’ll trim a bit off my insert and give to the engineers so they can finalize the design of an extrusion die.  They then run off a prototype piece and I would test it for fit on my boat.  If all is good, a 50% deposit would hold a place in the production run.

 

If there is sufficient interest, we could have material in hand in 3 weeks.

 

At this point we have gone as far as we can go without having a read if there is enough interest in going further, so if this is something you’d want to participate in, or if you just have questions, drop an e-mail to greatketch@...

When we first bought Ya Fohi we went through three genoa furler belts in a year. We then started furling in only with the load taken off the sail and since then have not had any problem and are still using the original Banmar furlers.

We installed the new Bamar furlers about 2 years ago and have used it for two seasons. So far we have had no issues.

 

We never furl under load. We always loosen the sheets to the point right before the sail starts to flap and furl, loosing the sheets as needed so the furlers never have the pressure of the loaded sheets placed on them.. We do unfurl under toad which does not place any extra load on the furler.

 

I think this would be good practice regardless of the furler used.

I believe the diameter is 21”, but assuming you are out of the water, you can measure to be sure. We re-powered with a Yanmar, and the pitch PYI came up with was exactly correct when we sea trialed it.

The first Amel 54 (until which number ?) had the same motor on the genua and Trinquette,  in later models the motor of the genua was bigger MEJ 2.0 . So the problem is the boxcontrol unit - it should break down the fuse by overload. If not adjusted in the right way you have a broken belt.
