Re: Front furler Bamar MEJ upgrade to EJF? Is it worth it?
I also have a problem understanding the issue on the furler drainage. The thick black (electrical) cable does go via a ss pipe (if I remember correctly) into the sail/bow locker and on AMELIT the caulking around that cable into the ss pipe was compromised and allowed water into the sail/bow locker. Once we fixed that no more water via that entry into the locker.
When I am back on the boat I will check if there is a drain plug on the bottom of the furler.

I replaced both furlers with the EJF’s. Since they use a planetary gear system instead of belts and worm-gears the torque provided by the furler is about twice as high compared to the original MEJ’s at the same power consumption. For me
they are working well, When furling in strong winds I can’t hear the motor being stressed at all, it furls in quite smoothly.

Stuart, Good luck. It sounds like you had a suction leak causing the pump to not get to cut-off pressure. Bill

More Options for Rub Rail Inserts
Karen Smith
Hey group,
We have done a little digging into the possibility of US based production options for the rub rail inserts. Seems a good option instead of shipping relatively inexpensive, yet bulky and heavy material across the ocean.
The basic answer is, yes they can. They have seen a dimensioned drawing of the insert, and confirmed that they can make it without technical difficulty. It would be made of EDPM, the premier rubber formulation for UV exposure. Not sure about color yet.
There isn’t enough information yet to set a hard price, but it looks like the MAXIMUM cost would be $800 per boat, and it could be as little as half that, plus UPS domestic ground shipping.
The process would look like this: If we get enough interest, I’ll trim a bit off my insert and give to the engineers so they can finalize the design of an extrusion die. They then run off a prototype piece and I would test it for fit on my boat. If all is good, a 50% deposit would hold a place in the production run.
If there is sufficient interest, we could have material in hand in 3 weeks.
At this point we have gone as far as we can go without having a read if there is enough interest in going further, so if this is something you’d want to participate in, or if you just have questions, drop an e-mail to greatketch@...

Re: Size of main anchor for Super Maramu
Karen Smith
Steve,
Bill had the following comments on the anchor and bridle: 1.) Our anchor mate is designed to mount on the starboard side, however our setup is symmetrical so either would work. 2.) Our Mantus bridle is the 3/4 inch version. 3.) Yes, the chafe gear is well fit. 4.) It came with the original chain hook Works great but is too big to go over the roller. We now use a Spectra loop and large soft shackle to attach bridle to the chain. Works great. 5.) Our chain is 10 mm g4 galvanized. On the older style of Amel bow roller you might need to move the roller down and back to accommodate the higher shank of the larger Mantus. Measure carefully. This can be a pain because Amel welded the roller shaft to the side plates... We use the Mantus bridle only when we expect to be in nasty weather. 90% of the time we use a 40 foot 3/4" 12 plait nylon line that we rolling hitch to the chain. Today has been pump day.. On the suction side of the pump the short brass connection :- 1.The threaded connection to the pump body has been tightened with plumbers tape on the thread ( it was loose) 2.The one way valve was checked and it appears to be working ( one way ). 3. The hose onto the connection was cut back to give a fresh connection ( the 30mm cut off appeared to have a split and certainly mis-shaped ) 4. The pump cover which had a slight drip was removed , cleaned off, new liquid gasket applied and reassembled. It requires 24 hours to go off. So now its a waiting game until tomorrow morning. We haven’t touched the pressure switch yet. Standing by Beam IV , out ..

When we first bought Ya Fohi we went through three genoa furler belts in a year. We then started furling in only with the load taken off the sail and since then have not had any problem and are still using the original Banmar furlers.

Hello Stefan;
We installed the new Bamar furlers about 2 years ago and have used it for two seasons. So far we have had no issues.
We never furl under load. We always loosen the sheets to the point right before the sail starts to flap and furl, loosing the sheets as needed so the furlers never have the pressure of the loaded sheets placed on them.. We do unfurl under toad which does not place any extra load on the furler.
I think this would be good practice regardless of the furler used. Respectfully;

I have a hard time understanding the thing Courtney mentions about the cable sleeve also used for draining any water that enters the unit. When you buy the units the sleeve is quite long and I cannot imagine some Italian designer thinks to use it as a drain pathway. It seems more that you must prevent water to enter the sleeve so it cannot reach the unit. Do make sure you use the electronically controlled Boxtrons in conjunction with the new furlers as they also provide a soft-start to make it easier on the rig. Regards, Arno Luijten SV Luna, A54-121

Dear Amelians,
I’m mounting a SSB radio on Euploia. It seems to the technician that the ground plate is old and too “smooth” to grant a good conduction; he thinks it would be better to change it. Someone of you did that? Is it sufficient to unscrew the four screws or should I pay attention to something special to be done? How is the plate hold in site? Thanks a lot to anyone could contribute Stefania e Dietmar Euploia SN #93 Italy

Stefan, The first Amel 54 (until which number ?) had the same motor on the genua and Trinquette, in later models the motor of the genua was bigger MEJ 2.0 . So the problem is the boxcontrol unit - it should break down the fuse by overload. If not adjusted in the right way you have a broken belt. With new sailors on board I always have the fuse shutting off because of too much load on the sheet while furling. Amel is not only push bottom - respect the sea and wind. Don't change too early to new equipment. All the best Wolfgang Weber SY Elise Amel 54 #162

Stefan, I had many issues with my Genoa MEJ on my Amel 54 - belts breaking and then a rusted-solid motor. Since I have an earlier Amel 54, I had the original smaller version.
In Martinique I replaced it with a Reckman furler. I will never go back. It is fantastic - twice as fast and you can use it in fairly heavy weather (with caution of course). The only concern is the cost. It is roughly twice the price of the new Bamar. If you can do it, I truly recommend the Reckman. Even now I have problems with my staysail Bamar. All the new Amels use the Reckman. By the way, I do know of some folks that have had problems with the newer EFJ, but I am not sure what they did to address the concerns. Jamie Phantom A54 #44

Rob, Take Steves advice and call PYI , ask for Fred Hutchinson ,he knows everything about the Max props, and will answer all your questions . I bought a Max Classic 22" 16 pitch 70 mm shaft and I have a Volvo TMD22a. Fred was very helpful and even advised me in order to save some money ,that I could purchase the prop from Fawcetts Marine in Annapolis ,they are a dealer and can discount the prop ,where PYI cannot.
Good Luck,

Porter there is tubing that comes out of the bottom of the unit and goes through the deck into the sail locker it serves two purposes it carries the wires for the power it also acts as the drain for the unit sometimes if this package is not stretched tight a loop is created near the Furler so water cannot drain which then allows
