Albon at Amel in Martinique can probably have the gear or shaft/gear for you when you arrive. You can email him at amel.caraibes"at"wanadoo.fr

Recently, I was in Antigua with a client and Amel 54 owner that many of you know. Antigua's Jolly Harbour is a beautiful place and the home of some special shops which I believe can help Amel owners. Here are 3 special people I met: 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙬𝙖𝙮 𝘿𝙤𝙤𝙧 𝙑𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙚𝙧 I met Chris Waelen (Anything Wood) in Jolly Harbour Boatyard, Jolly Harbour, Antigua. Chris works wonders with anything wood. I just had two teeth on the gear attached to the horizontal winch-handle shaft break off. No warning as it has always worked smoothly and easily. It feels too light-weight to be stainless. Is it aluminum???
Also, the last time I serviced it was probably 5 years ago, and I found it greased when I opened it, so I regreased it. This time the grease has some water in it, with a little milky color, but all works smoothly and easily. My question is whether it should have been greased. I have read that the holes in the bottom are to let water out, and that it should be flushed regularly with fresh water. That sounds like a no-grease sçenario....maybe sailcote or other dry lubricant? I was unable to open Gary's file about servicing it. What about the main Furler manual gearbox? It still works and I've never serviced it, but I'm way overdue to do that and now am concerned about the foil shearing after 20 years. Again, should it be greased, or not?
Will be in Martinique in about 2 weeks. Thanks in advance for any and all advice. Kent and Iris Kristy SN243

There is NO restrictions for boats to come to Sint Maarten.
Alexandre Uster von Baar
An Amel owner just asked me if boats were still allowed to go to Sint Maarten, so I went to Immigration and ask. Only incoming “commercial” flights from the US, UK and EU are canceled as well as cruise ship. Private jets & boats are still allowed to come to the island, “REGARDLESS” of where they are coming from. Which is not the case for Turks & Caicos as a friend of mine (non-Amel owner) was denied access since he came from Dominican Republic. Hope that helps. Alexandre

Re: Beam IV : A55 ; Shelter Bay , rudder assembly
Joerg Esdorn
In my experience, the nut is very tight at all times so turning "until tight" doesn't necessarily work. You don't want to over tighten this because it will shorten the period to a complete repacking of the gland. I would try 1/6 turn first or maybe 2/6 if you have a lot of water. I had a little bit of water in 2018 (less than 0.1 liters) and tightened it by 1/6. At the end of 2019, I again had a little water (again less than 0.1 liters) and tightened it again by 1/6. We'll see how it goes by the end of this season (crossing my fingers there will be a season ....).

Re: Beam IV : A55 ; Shelter Bay , rudder assembly
Use the Amel-supplied wrench and turn the plastic nut 1/6th of a turn or more until tight. I have been on a 55 that required 1/2 turn, but it is usually 1/6th. On all but the first 55s, Amel installed a high water alarm for this water-tight box. Be sure that it works and your batteries are fresh. If you do not have a water alarm installed, install one. I note that your 55 #009 has cable steering from the helm rather than hydraulic steering. Joerg has hydraulic steering from the helm. This is one of the reasons for the differences.

Re: Forward Looking Sonar
Joerg Esdorn
I have purchased an Echopilot 2D and now the question is where to install it. Amel advises it needs to be installed 1.5 m away from the sonic speed transducer. They are suggesting 1.5 m forward of that which would put it very far forward in a place where it may come out of the water and contrary to the instructions from Echopilot. For those who have it installed, where is it installed on your boat?

You need to remove the plate circled in red. You will then have access to a large plastic nut which can be tightened clockwise in 1/6 revolution increments. AMEL provides a large custom wrench to turn this nut but you could likely use an adjustable wrench as well.

Re: Bow thruster oil seal leak
Peter de Groot
Thank you Bill and Giovanni, Bill, RTV was used, I just did a good job wiping off the excess. The leak is between the shaft and the lip of seal not seal to housing. I agree that we need SAV at Amel. I actually sent SAV an inquiry earlier today. I always like to be prepared with contingencies and choices.
Giovanni, I agree, a little water in the oil is OK, but this leak is too much.

Hello Paul, I have both from FURUNO and I am very satisfied with it. The digital radar on both MFD12 and the old one in navigation. I use the digital at night and, if necessary, the analog for control purposes. When driving close to the coast I use the analogue so the alarm settings of the digital one do not always have to be changed. Furthermore, it is a wonderful backup should the digital fail.
