Re: Gas springs on the aft Lasarett
Hi Craig,
Don't you just open the lazarette hatch and lean it back against the sloping aft cabin hatch ? That gives complete and unparalleled access to the lazarette for any shape or size of "stuff" IMO gas struts would just add an unnecessary complication and get in the way. Cheers Alan Elyse SM437

Where to put the life raft
eric freedman
Hi Craig, Had you thought of putting your life raft in the cockpit port locker? It is very easy to get out from there. In addition, in horrific conditions, you really don’t want to be at the stern. Fair Winds Eric Amel Super Maramu #376

Re: Gas springs on the aft Lasarett
That seems interesting to me. My first concern is that when open, the struts would provide a small but possibly problematic interference for setting/sliding things onto the decks (I mostly just push things forward when I'm down in there hauling stuff out). I was thinking having that strut/bar in the way might be a small inconvenience.
On the other hand, it might be a small but useful grab bar as long as you didn't bend it :) Gary W. SM 209 Adagio Brunswick, GA

Re: Gas springs on the aft Lasarett
Hi Paul and Lady Annita,
I have also been toying with adding gas struts to my aft locker because that is where I have my life raft and it is pretty heavy to lift up (more so every year :-) Some thoughts I have considered are that tail gates on automobiles do open more than 90 degrees, so that should not be a problem. However, you really do not need the hatch to automatically open and close to its full swing. A manual operation where it simply gives an assist on opening would be fine (like the SM cockpit/engine room hatch). if it opened more than 90 degrees, no problem, you could just start the closing by hand and the piston would provide the dampening to give a soft close. I haven't engineered a specific solution yet, but it seems totally feasible. Any further thoughts/ideas or specific gas strut recommendations would be welcome. Cheers, Craig

I don’t think it will work with a gas strut/spring on that hatch, because you open the hatch more than 90 degrees and when the hatch is resting towards the aftcabin roof it is beyond the critical angel where it can close it self. /Annsofie, S/Y Lady Annila SM232, 1998

Gas springs on the aft Lasarett
I would like to have gas springs on the aft lasarett on my SM. Is there anyone who have installed that? in that case what size and "strength" did you use? any picture would be appreciated.
I'm afraid the hatch might be to short to have any real use for gas springs, but I might be wrong (not unusual) Paul on SY Kerpa SM#259 Lagos, Portugal

Re: Passarelle
Hi Paul,
We have Besenzoni Skipper pasarelle on Elyse, I imagine that's what you have. I've used it a few times in Med moor situations, but they're not that common outside of the Med. Ours rarely gets used and has in fact seized up, the motor on the pump has died, and I'm seriously considering dumping it. If I were you, I'd take it off, you may never see the need to put it back on ! Cheers Alan Elyse SM437 ...currently locked down in New Zealand...without me!

Re: Passarelle
We toke it off today, it toke a few hours, still have the hydraulic pump and some cabling to remove. And of course make the transom look good again, a few holes to cover. She looks much more beautiful now, and when the mark from the old passarelle is gone she will look great again.
We have probably a much simpler solution on our SM than on the 54, it would not retract totally so part of it would always be outside the transom. Still rather heavy but we manage my wife and I. Paul SY Kerpa SM#259 Lagos, Portugal sykerpa.com

Arno,
I’m a bit nervous about doing this now! It won’t be for quite a while though, so I’ll file this for now – many thanks.

Paul from Ya Fohi, What I did is remove the bolts from the base that hold it to the boat. Then I removed the hydraulic hoses which mean you will have to cut them. The sensor cables can be saved though. As the base is glued to the boat with some kind of caulking you will find the passerelle still firmly holding on to the boat. What I did in the end is tie a rope to the end of the passerelle and tie it to the dock (our boat is moored stern-to). Then using a little slack on the mooring lines, I gave the boat a firm push away from the dock. The weight of the boat resulted in a bing bang an a released passerelle with surpisingly little damage to the gelcoat. Careful, the passerelle is REALLY heavy! Make sure it’s tied to the boat so it does not become an anchor, also limit the slack on the mooring lines. You will need 3 or 4 persons to lift the thing off the boat. A new rotary actuator will set you back 5 or 6k$. Mine was seized up solid and beyond repair. And then the rest...

AQUARIUS SM2K #262 - Completed a circumnavigation 2007 under the ownership of "Jemp". At the time she was named "Aquarius IV" due to the laws of Luxembourg stating no two boats can have the same name. We dropped the "IV" because USA does not have this requirement.
Jemp wrote a book about his circumnavigation, and Amel gave his book to the first 40 owners of the Amel 54 when they took delivery. Aquarius is currently 1/2 way into her 2nd circumnavigation.

Re: USA only insurance
So Gary Golden is Al Golden's son. I believe Al, whose company was IMIS, started the Jackline policy underwritten by Markel Insurance Co. Then (likely with Gary in the mix) IMIS merged (or was sold to) Gowrie and offers the Jackline policy thru Gowrie. Not sure if the IMIS brand is still there. Anyway, it sounds like Gary has now gone off with a new product-branch-marketer-whatever to offer another substitute product. Certainly worth looking into as Al and Gary are both stand-up professionals.
