Dear Amel Owners,

We are in need of the main sail, manual furling gear box assy for an SM2000 model Amel 53’ – would anyone have either a second hand or new one that you could offer to us to purchase?

Re: Boat Insurance During Pandemic

This “boat insurance companies dropping policies” movement since Maria and Irma evades my understanding. I’m wondering if someone has some insight. I understand how the real or perceived risk has increased with global warming and storm frequency increases, but why then not just increase premiums to offset risk?  Why so many getting out of the business? Seems like something more, structural is afoot.  Anyone with insights?
Appreciated.

Hi Drew;

We insure through Alliance Marine Risk Managers in Florida. They seem to do OK for EU area for US flagged boats. Here’s our contact. Let her know I sent you and she should take good care of you.

Bow seat for Amel 54

Barry Connor

Hi Nicolas,

You inspired me, been getting a bit lazy under this French lockdown,
With no sign of going sailing for some weeks I decided to put the seat back on the bow.
Very simple and quick to do. Hope these below photos shows you want you need to see.

Haha.. you'd have to ask her for the truth, but she just remarked it was an experience she'd rather forget..

I like a challenging repair anyway, so the punishment didn't last long!

Re: Xantrex Link 10 Battery Monitor

Hi Tom,

I don't know what your longer term electrical vision is, but I replaced mine with the Victron BMV 712.  It has a nice Blue Tooth interface and app on your phone.  I already had a Victron Blue Solar MPPT and was installing a Victron MultiPlus Charger/inverter to replace my 100amp charger and 2000watt inverter.

Then I also installed a Victron Venus GX for about $200 and that takes the input from all your Victron devices and sends them via WiFi to any onboard devices you want and also be if you have an external wifi connection you can send info to the Victron connect network.  This can be useful if you can be connected to a marina/boatyard wifi when you are away from your boat to monitor your electrical system.  Victron has several GX products. The Venus does not have a screen. Lori did not want to add anymore displays in the galley. So we mounted it in the cabinet above the sink, just starboard of the autopilot.  I think they now have a newer product but I have not reviewed the features.

Have fun.

Hi Tom,

I had the same amd since 2017 I am happy with this replacement for 130 euro incl. 21% tax:

https://tbs-electronics.com/product/expert-lite-battery-monitor-12v-24v

It is a modern design using a Microchip PIC processor and a dual 16 bit sigma delta ADC.

Yes, you can re-use the existing cabling, fuse holders and the 500A/50mV shunt of the Xantrex.

Or you use the TBS supplied one, pull a new CAT5 and do not forget to fit their fuses.

Note that you cannot measure the 12V starter battery as "aux" battery without using an extra isolation amplifier as  the engine/genset circuit is completely isolated from the service batteries.

Hope this helps you,

In the end i used a 12mm dowel and sanded it down (stuck it in a drill) so it just fit inside the broken pipe. Then with a full tank of water i used strong glue on half the length and stuck it in the lower half. I waited 3 days (probably an overkill, but i am not moving any where with the virus lockdown) then glued the top of the pipe on. A thin black permanent marker hides the hairline crack remaining. My dowel was 28cm long. I’ll be keeping it closed in future except when momentarily checking....

Hi All,

I'm once again seeing the main database report corruption issues and I think at this point it's prudent to switch over to one of our backup databases. I have no reason to believe any data's been lost, this is just an index issue. The site will be down starting at 8pm Pacific Time (3am UTC time). I'd say plan for an hour outage, although I don't think it'll take nearly that long. Email sent to groups during this time will be queued up and delivered once the site is back up.

Thanks, Mark

Re: Bow seat on Amel 54

Hi Nicolas Klene
See the photo below.
The Amel 54 has the bow set up to put a hinged wooden lift up board across.
As mentioned the lines from the Parasailor come down just where the board fits, so had to take the board off.

My wife broke our water stick last year. I inserted a hollow PVC tube with epoxy, reattached the broken end and wrapped with as thin a piece of fibreglass cloth I could find.. They are stickers.  I purchased them last year and installed.  A year later they look great.

Hello Olaf,

That is a wonderful file that you have written about the removal and repair of the rudder of the Amel Super Maramu #376.

I have a question. Why did you not repair the rudder in place.

Secondly the wrench for the rudder nut made of aluminum shown in a blue background  ,  is not an Amel item . It was made by me .

I cut it out of 6 mm aluminum stock with a band saw and finished by hand. It is short enough that the rudder nut can be tightened while the boat is at sea.

Again Great Job !!.

Re: Location of the battery bank on an older Super Maramu

John Clark

Agree with all previous posters.  Annie, SM37 has the house batteries, six of them under the passage bunk.  They are arranged in two groups of three with the disconnect in the cabinet in the middle.    Not sure who did the modification or if it was from the factory.  The workmanship looks good, like original.    The engine battery is located in the box at the base of the fwd engine room bulkhead.  Yes it looks like more batteries can fit there however that space is now the reserve lube oil and coolant storage...along with some engine maintenance items.  There is a second power disconnect above the box that kills 24&12 volt power...seems to me that would indicate the batteries were relocated after leaving the factory.  I am running all AGMs, they are about eight years old and still hanging in there.  I have and recommend 650w of solar panels on an arch and the original hydrogenerator on the shaft.  When sailing above 5 kts I never need genset, at anchor maybe every few days....with two people.  Right now with just me and the dog onboard, two refrigerators on at anchor solar tops off batteries by 4pm in the USVI.

Hey there, our 1991 SM#56 has a lot of later SM2000 features/upgrades as far as I can tell. One of them from the sounds of it is the battery setup. Under the passage bed fits perfectly: 8 house batteries, the starter battery, and solar and wind controller. That is what I would do, I can't imagine anything else for it. Here some pics, but I couldn't really open the top very high due to supplies being stored there atm...
