Laurie, I apologize. I was in the zoom meeting when I received your email asking how to attend the zoom meeting. I quickly pressed a button to send you a form email for the zoom meeting, but accidentally pressed the wrong button and sent an email about my Amel Book. I am an idiot and I am very sorry about that. I see that Tilo also responded by sending you a link to the YouTube simulcast. I hope that you were able to view it. Bill

Rigging tension gauge
Ryan Meador
Hi all, On the Zoom call this evening, Ian asked if anyone uses a tension gauge when tuning their standing rigging. Here in the Northeastern USA, it seems that none of the professional riggers use them (I even had one tell me no such thing exists for wires as large as our rigging). But down in Martinique, Caraïbe Gréement (the Amel-affiliated rigging company) uses an elevator cable strain gauge for this purpose. I've attached a photo I snapped while Gaëtan's crew was working on our boat. It made quick work of the process. I'm tempted to buy one for my own use. Thanks, Ryan and Kelly

Re: Lewmar acrylic lens replacement on Amel 54
Hi Barry,
I would not worry too much about the size difference. Do make sure you are looking at the medium size profile series as opposed to the Ocean series and the low-profile series. Word of advice; also order new hinge pins as you are likely forced to break the existing ones out when removing the hatch. Lewmar did not put anti-seize paste on the hinge-pins (stainless pin in alloy hole). Also the small grub-screws holding the two halves of the frame together may prove a pig to remove. When replacing the lens most definitely also replace the seal that holds the lens, you will get leaks otherwise. I had all the hatches done last year, but did not require new lenses. Only the seals were replace because of leakage. Regards, Arno Luijten SV Luna, A54-121

Re: Lewmar acrylic lens replacement on Amel 54
I don’t know if any Amel 54 owners have had to replace the acrylics before. If anyone has any experience with replacement of the acrylics I would really appreciate any advise. This is becoming a challenge. A have had some traders wanting to cut out and replace, don’t know what quality acrylic I might get. I only want the genuine supply from manufacturers. Would appreciate any advise that anyone has. Best Barry and Penny Connor “SV Lady Penelope II” Amel 54. #17 Sainte Anne anchorage Martinique

Thank you - Bill - I suspected that - I seem to have my own system - rather tighter than any other yacht rig I have known. Best wishes Petet

Barry,
I’m curious as to why they need replacing – UV damage? Should I be concerned about mine?

I need to replace all my Lewmar arcylic lens on the 7 Lewmar hatches. I have measured the outside and they tally with Lewmar specs for the size 50,54,60,and 70. -- Cheers Paul Ya Fohi - Amel 54 #98

Re: Engine room hatch repair
Alan Grayson
Hi Steve, All those screws removed, were they just holding the sound insulation in place?
When I get a lot of water on the cockpit floor I get a squishy sound when I walk on it. I'm guessing that all the wood is water logged but if there are that many screws I imagine water would leak out of at least a couple of them and that is not the case.
Maybe I can just get away with what you did.

Dan Wilcox
Thank you all for the recommendations. As usual, this group is a wealth of knowledge that I greatly appreciate. Luckily all the models recommended are local here. Force 10 is about $1,500 at one end, and the OceanChef about $4,000 at the other. So now comes the hard decision of how much to invest. Thanks, Dan Feierabend #86

Peter, Remember that even if a diagram exists, the 54 rigging specs were changed twice during the production. The SM was the same throughout production.

Re: Dessalator DUO 100 - Watermaker HP hose/pipe
To reuse the Dessalator screw-on fittings you will need a hose that is very similar to the hose Dessalator uses. I have done this with hose that I bought from Dessalator. I am sorry that I do not have the specs. Click here for instructions for reusing the fittings.
