Re: Lewmar acrylic lens replacement on Amel 54

Barry Connor
Hi Oliver, Your anchored just in front of me, closer to the beach. Caraibe Marine want to take them off. I don't think that they would take them apart and replace the seals, lens and handles whilst onboard. The price that I am seeing from them is about the same as getting complete new hatches from Defender and shipping them here. Not sure on how to do the import/clearance here in Le Marin. Have you imported anything during this lockdown? Best

I would recommend buying complete Lewmar hatches and throwing away the frames. I did this on my last boat and it was cheaper than just buying the lid or all the small parts. The exchange was completed in a short time and looked fantastic.

We only live on the boat 6 months a year, but in 7 years have had to replace a number of items which have rusted or melted! No disgrace to the stove, but ENO and others have a bigger market in the mass market of boat owners still at work who unfortunately can only use their boats at weekends and short holidays - probably dining ashore as it’s a holiday. Our cooker is on the same level of need as our electricity charging system which is in constant use every day. Next time, lesson learnt, I will replace with a GN. PS. Although I don’t do much of the cooking, I do get all of the cleaning and maintenance of the cooker!!
Good luck with your choice.

Thanks Arno, I will make sure I replace both the hinge pins and grub screws. I found one Lewmar agent with some lens in stock. I am asking them to give me the actual lens measurements.

Hi Barry,
I would not worry too much about the size difference. Do make sure you are looking at the medium size profile series as opposed to the Ocean series and the low-profile series.
Word of advice; also order new hinge pins as you are likely forced to break the existing ones out when removing the hatch. Lewmar did not put anti-seize paste on the hinge-pins (stainless pin in alloy hole). Also the small grub-screws holding the two halves of the frame together may prove a pig to remove. When replacing the lens most definitely also replace the seal that holds the lens, you will get leaks otherwise. I had all the hatches done last year, but did not require new lenses. Only the seals were replace because of leakage.

Re: Rigging tension gauge
It is much cheaper to use the method introduced by Selden.

Hi Ryan, I am going to test this one. The vivration frecuency (musical note) os a string depends on the tension. More tension = higer frecuency. Thus, why not to try with a bass guitar tuner? :-) All the Best, Diego de Miguel Sharky 52
