Re: Genoa Swivel - position + binding connection to the genoa top loop - Amel 54
Hi,
Relax, the furler swivel is just as it should be. To enlighten you, the swivel is developed to fly two headsails simultaneously. Actually the Genua and the Ballooner (that is wat Amel calls it). If you look carefully you should notice three grooves in the foil. This setup is created for what is called "Tradewind sailing", two headsails, no main, downwind sailing. It starts with a poled out Genua to one side (I'm not sure which side). Next you hoist the ballooner using a plastic "mouse" at the top of the sail in the second groove. The mouse has a hook to it to connect the second halyard to. The two ends of the halyard need to be connected to each other as well, making it an endless loop. When the ballooner is up it latches inside the stainless "protection". Once it's latched you can pull the halyard out the hook in the plastic mouse. Using the second whisker-pole to pole-out the ballooner to the other side. If you now need to reduce sail because of a rain-squall or whatever, you can furl both sails together without getting the second halyard tangled. If you need to get the balooner down again there is a white color mouse that looks a bit different from the one on the ballooner. By hoisting this in the third groove you will release the latch that holds the ballooner up and you will be able to retrieve the sail. The ballooner sail is a little bit like a Code-0 sail. So the genua goes into the single groove in the foil on opposite of the two grooves that are next to each other. Standard Amel supplied the 54 (with ballooner option) with 4 mouse-sliders, two of each type and one of those connected to the top of the ballooner-sail. Regards, Arno Luijten, SV Luna, A54-121 PS Be very careful to remove the stainless "protector" from the swivel as the bolts tend to be frozen solid in the aluminum swivel. I had to drill one out on our boat.

Dear Bill,
no, it has 1 pole. Ballooner/ gennaker is separate furled in front of the genoa. But I like the possibility to have 2 genoa in the foil (butterfly) - very good experiences on my previous catamaran. And the genoa was attached in the left of the 2 grooves. Best regards Stefan Amel 54 119 Lady Charlyette, currently Le Marin

Re: Zink Anode for SPURS Line Cutter
Eric, et al, One of the blades should be held in place by the V shaped oil drain bolt, the other blade spins with the shaft. Something is very wrong with this installation.

Before I answer, is your 54 rigged for twin headsails with two poles (ballooner)?

THX so much. Another pic, not so good, from aside view. For more detailed enclosed view, you can it enlarge. Hopfully the space between is just right enough to fit the second fixed blade. So I would order it from Spurs. From the US to Greece. (Interesting and confusing is the picture shown in the Amels owners manual page 7-21, where are only a 1 set of blades shown. „semi cutter“ system?) you are very right, I just find a picture from last year on the hard. This may be the original Amel setup from 2008.
SPURS type B(ravo).
But the 2. blade mounting and zinc missing. And in the owners manual (for options) I also find a picture from original setup (2008) like mine. Confusing. Any comments and recommendations for clarifying are very appreciated . Thanks to all.
Best wishes and stay safe! and Eric, good luck for your little escape :)

Genoa Swivel - position + binding connection to the genoa top loop - Amel 54
Stefan Schaufert
Dear Ameliens,
I got a new front furler and have to hoist the genoa again. When I prepaired the genoa loops I got the feeling that the Swivel respectively the lower part is in the wrong position. At least it looks like. The stainless steel protection/ cover blocks the 2 grooves and the hole for the binding connection is on the opposite side. Unfortunately I did not took pictures from taking down the genoa. But I know that the genoa was in the left one of the 2 grooves. The lonely front groove seems to be also possible but the threading point is much to high. Probably I am wrong. My questions: 1. Is the position of the lower Swivel part right? 2. Do you have a picture with the right binding (hole on front, loop on back of the foil is not ideal - thus the binding has to go around the foil)? 3. What is the purpose of the stainless steel protection/ cover? 4. Inside the protection is a „mouse clip“. What is it for? Thx a lot for your help. Stefan, Lady Charlyette, Amel 54 119, Le Marin

We have photos of our set up for pumping the bilges. We did not compromise any of our watertight bulkheads. It’s a bit hard to describe in words, so photos work much better.
Do you have a direct e-mail address we can send the photos and description of work to you. Happy to put it all up on the Owners site too if anyone else is interested?
Kind regards, Brian and Sue S Y Lola

Hi Brian & Sue, I'm interested in both of your modifications. I guess most if us have overfilled our fresh water tank at least once. At least the bilge gets cleaned ;-)> The only way I have of pumping water from the saloon or cabins is a sump pump that requires my 24vDC > 119v AC inverter to be functional, or a small 24v DC pump that I have used for water that collected by the forward head when the bow thruster seal failed. I have just the primary bilge pump and manual Whale pump in the engine room.
I heard a talk by a couple who got knocked down (not Amel) in the Indian Ocean by a rogue wave during an otherwise manageable storm. They had a boat full of sea water and their cabins were strewn with debris from every locker and drawer in the boat. Paper from their paperback books turned to mush and clogged their bilge pump. They ended up using a bucket. Eventually they called for help and abandoned ship because they had no fresh water, no electricity, no way to heat food, no engine, and no standing rig.
This story prompted me to install the battery box bolts that have never been there since I bought Kristy; I will install latches on the cabin sole lockers; I am looking at options for additional pumping capacity.
Do you have pictures of your modifications? I guess there is a fitting through the forward engine room bulkhead?
How much water will your engine pump? What do you do about debris? I guess the intake in the sump only allows pumping out water that gets into the grey water system. That wouldn't help much if there was water in the cabins or saloon.
Has anyone added an engine-driven pump that would not require an intact electrical system?
Any other thoughts? Kent&Iris Kristy SM243 St Michaels, MD

Re: More Options for Rub Rail Inserts
Karen Smith
With at least some businesses coming back on line in some areas, we are going to try again to put together a group of Amel owners who are looking to improve the appearance of their boats.
The rubber inserts that act as gutters along the top of the rubrail on the Super Maramu and Santorin have been occasionally available from Amel, but as heavy, bulky items shipping costs have been high from Europe to North America.
On our boat, SM #160, the rubber inserts are a faded, chalky, red with crumbling edges, and with every rain they wash a little bit more red mud down the hull. It is time for them to go.
Just before the virus business disruptions hit hard, we had identified a custom extrusion company who could reproduce these for us in white EDPM, the most UV resistant rubber compound available. All of the Super Maramus and Santorin used the same rubrail design, even those toward the end of the production run that had hard PVC gutters. Custom colors (i.e., not white) are not going to be a cost effective option.
If your rub rail gutters are showing their age, and looking a bit ratty, or have been damaged, here is the chance for a significant cosmetic upgrade.
Until I get updated quotes, I can’t promise a price, but I’d expect less than $900–delivered by UPS—anywhere in the USA. (Hawaii is possible, but can’t promise a delivery cost there yet.) The more people we have signed up, the more we can spread the setup costs, and the cheaper it gets. The last delivered price I saw from Amel was over $2300.
Terms would be: 50% deposit to secure the order and lock in the price, and 50% when ready to ship. Once the production run is set up and scheduled, we can’t add more later, so we’ll need to know everybody interested ahead of time. Reply to get on our list... No money need yet, certainly not until we have a firm price and schedule.
If you did not get an email from us in the past week or so, you have somehow dropped off our radar, so let us know you are still interested.
Not sure on timing yet, but requests for quote have gone out. I am hoping some of these places are hungry for business.

Re: no bilge pump in saloon Am54
Miles
For what is it worth, here is what I do about the fresh water overflow problem;
I have a whole house filter that attaches to the hose to the water source. A short hose goes from the filter to the boat water intake. The filter 1) makes sure that there is never any chlorine or dirt in my water tanks, and 2) slows the flow of the water coming in. I see how long it takes for the first 100 liters and then I set a kitchen timer for the amount of water I want. When the timer goes off, I turn off the hose. I do also have a backup electric pump that I bought after a dishwasher incident. The pump is a big, heavy thing that hardware stores sell for pumping water out of flooded basements. It is centrifugal so bits of paper and debris do not bother it.
