Hi Jacob I’ve just replaced rotten bonding cables with the attached There is lots of good discussions about this on the forum that I read up on before attempting it and that helped. It’s a shot taken lying on top of my engine looking down into the bilge Copper strap is 50mm by 4mm I can dig out length I bought too if helpful 20 or was it 22mm hole 2 inches from end that then attaches to keel bolt Long extensions on 30mm socket set Was quite easy. Only hard part was getting the shape about right Happy to help if you have qs I would also say that a solution with oversized copper braid cable would work well. Perhaps for not as long. All the best Miles Maramu 162

Steel is steel. If bare steel is exposed to salt water it will rust. It is very important to immediately prime the ballast as soon as it is sanded. Slight oxidation will cause the bottom paint to flake of. Fair Winds Eric Amel Super Maramu #376

Fair enough, but setting my specific vessel aside, and asking about ballast and copper straps on Maramus in general:
1. If the copper strap is intact, then is it true that there would be no rusting of the ballast? 2. If the rust repair job is done perfectly (the ballast is sanded clean and shiny and then immediately sealed of), then is the copper strap even necessary? 3. Is it possible that a 1979 Maramu never had a strap? 4. If the strap were missing for several years from a Maramu that should have had it then what problems would you expect to see? 5. How have others physically managed to attach a strap at the bottom of the bilge on a Maramu? Does anyone have pictures of that job? 6. Could anyone who has the strap in place on their Maramu please comment on where it attaches at the other end from the ballast? 7. In general, how can you ever be sure that the upper surface of the ballast against the GRP stub is sealed and free of rust? Thanks! Jacob Champness Maramu #42, Lark St Augustine, USA

IALA buoy system warning
Oliver Henrichsen, SV Vela Nautica
Hello, Warning according to an incident yesterday in le Marin, Martinique. We observed an AMEL super maramu full sail up entering the bay. The captain left a green buoy at his starboard side and ended up shipwracked on the reef. We do not know all details of this incident. But be warned, here is the IALA buoy sytem B used opposite to europe with IALA system A. All european scippers need to pay attention. IALA A is used by countries in Africa, most of Asia, Australia, Europe and India. IALA B is used by countries in North, Central and South America, Japan, Korea and the Philippines. By mixing up the different color code you my end up on the reef. Oliver from Vela Nautica Amel54 #39 Martinique

Dear Arno, dear Bill,
thx a lot for your fast response, help and explanations. Seems that I had the wrong memories, despite I am only 50 years old ;-)) Now I have a better picture for the purpose of the 2 grooves. My Amel is not equipped to use them. I will hoist the genoa in the single slot and everything is fine again. Best regards Stefan Amel 54 119 Lady Charlyette, last day in Le Marin

Re: Genoa Swivel - position + binding connection to the genoa top loop - Amel 54
To add to Bill's remark, the Ballooner and the Gennaker are NOT the same sails. I believe the Ballooner to be a bit less "baggy" compared to the Gennaker. This enables it to be furled together with the Genua.
When you look at Bill's picture you can see the latching mouse needs to go to the right slot (relative to the view of picture) and the releasing mouse is hoisted in the left slot (again relative to the picture). Regards, Arno Luijten SV Luna, A54-121

Re: Genoa Swivel - position + binding connection to the genoa top loop - Amel 54
OK, I believe you are trying to raise the genoa on the wrong slot. The genoa goes into the isolated single slot. The other two slots which are close together are used by the Amel twin pole system. It is possible that your swivel and foil are also rigged with a tongue guide on the swivel. I am not sure what you have, but the aluminum tongue looks like this: Bill

Re: Keel rust and ballast straps on a Maramu
Jacob, I think it is impossible to answer your questions because the historical information is not available to you or me. An Amel the age of your Maramu has been through numerous owners and many changes. Yes, the "guys" doing the rust prevention job likely did not do it correctly, which is another non-spec. change. Trust me when I say, your Maramu has many of these. The next time your Maramu is out of the water, test continuity from one of the exposed iron spots to the zinc on the rudder. If no continuity, your iron ballast is not protected.

Mango Headsail Question
Arlo
Hello all. I have a 1985 Mango and looking at flying dual headsails for downwind running. I have figured out the Amel poles and wanted to know if there was originally a mouse that runs up the foil when raising the second headsail like on the SM's or if it requires a different approach.....How are my fellow Mango owners handling this?
Thanks Arlo

Re: Spurs line cutter on Amel 54
eric freedman <kimberlite@...>
Hi Ulrich, The photo did not come through. The fixed Blade has a protrusion that fits into a V cut into the oil drain plug of the “C” Drive. I believe the blades are made for the Amel system and is not stock to Spurs. Attached please, find a photo of ½ of the fixed blade which broke on my spurs unit. If you will notice the V shaped part with 2 nylon “bumpers” this is half of what is missing from your spurs. This is the part that fits into the oil drain plug. Fair Winds Eric Amel Super Maramu #376

Hi Eric,
THX so much. Another pic, not so good, from aside view.
For more detailed enclosed view, you can it enlarge. Hopfully the space between is just right enough to fit the second fixed blade. So I would order it from Spurs. From the US to Greece.
(Interesting and confusing is the picture shown in the Amels owners manual page 7-21, where are only a 1 set of blades shown. „semi cutter“ system?)

Hi Eric, Hi all,
you are very right, I just find a picture from last year on the hard. This may be the original Amel setup from 2008.
SPURS type B(ravo).
But the 2. blade mounting and zinc missing. And in the owners manual (for options) I also find a picture from original setup (2008) like mine. Confusing. Any comments and recommendations for clarifying are very appreciated . Thanks to all.
Best wishes and stay safe! and Eric, good luck for your little escape :)
