Re: Genoa Swivel - position + binding connection to the genoa top loop - Amel 54
Bill,
Thanks for the link to the video. Now I got a good idea how the system works. Very smart solution ! I didn't know this existed. It's a shame we don't have the split poles anymore on the 54 because that was very easy system to set up. On our 54 we now use the Parasailor. But for a short handed crew I think the genoa/ballooner system is safer because it can be rolled in a second in case of a squall (specially at night) Drawback with the twin sails is the rolling of the boat and the necessity to sail almost dead downwind.

Re: Keel rust and ballast straps on a Maramu
Hi Jacob I put double sided tape (3M) into the socket. The nut sticked in it quite well until it was on. Is that attachment point at the top something you added, or is it original? Jacob

Re: SM Anodes especification

Ryan, I do not know. I believe it was a SM2k anode bolt that I measured. Of course, I did not measure a wide range of production years. And with the increasing age of the SM, it is impossible to rule out some owner modification. I do remember that I had to drill-out anodes bought in the US. Bill

Is it possible the size of the bolt changed between the SM and SM2000? Our anode bolts measure 9.84mm x 40.5mm. It's not imperial, because it's too big to be 3/8". It's exactly in spec for M10. I haven't seen or heard any evidence our boat has been modified in this respect. Ryan and Kelly

I recommend US R7 Anode (zinc 7" diameter). In Europe use a 127mm anode. An M12 bolt is used to secure the anode. Bill

Re: Genoa Swivel - position + binding connection to the genoa top loop - Amel 54
Laurens, Very few 54s had the second pole + ballooner option, although I believe all of the 54s had the genoa foil and swivel needed for the twin pole/ballooner. This video of a SM may help you visualize the system. The 54 poles are full length rather than 2-part SM poles. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqNF1ggKGRw Bill

Re: Amel decal
I had these vinyl decals made last week at a boat lettering shop near Palm Beach, Fl and they came out great.
If anyone still needs them I can send them to you at $65 for a set of two (port and starboard) plus $8.05 for USPS Priority Legal Flat Rate Envelop (2-day). Call it $75 total. I just checked with sav and they do have them in stock at 90€ for a set of two plus their estimate of 40€ for Fedex to USA. 130€ is about $145US. If interested DO NOT REPLY HERE - send a private email to CraigBriggs001@... (that's CraigBriggs001 at gmail dot com) and I'll put the order together. Here's a picture of mine.

Re: Bonding Strap
eric freedman
If you search back in the archives about 15 years ago there was a post of the measurements and bends of the strap. The thicker the better for that strap.

I cut off the top of the corroded strap with wires connected and soldered and bolted the top of the old strap to the new one. It has been good now for 15 years. It is easiest to use blue tape to connect the extension bars for the socket wrench and also tape the nut of the keel bolt to the 30 mm socket. Eric SM Kimberlite

Hi Jose, If yours are the same as ours, they're 125 mm diameter with a hole for an M10 bolt (11 mm hole). In the US, they're available from BoatZincs, where for some reason they're marketed specifically for Azimut boats, but they're the perfect size for us. The R5 is almost the right size as well, but being imperial, the hole is slightly too small and must be drilled out -- lots of people do this, but it's a pain when you can just get the right ones. Oliver, I found a 2" x 1./8" X 60 " long flat copper bar at McMaster Carr for like $85 ,which should do the job nicely.

It might be better to oversize the new strap.
A flattened 1" plumming copper pipe will do the job.
I would also install the upper end where you fix the bonding cables 10" higher so that they are less likly touched by any water.

I would like to purchase a copper strap to replace the original bonding strap. I looked in the files but could not find the original size used by Amel. Could someone provide me the width ,thickness and length of the strap.

I think the picture that you are looking for is in the Photos section of the forum, not the Files section. Look in the folder called "Bonding System - Bilge Ground Strap" and you will find the pictures that Judy Rouse uploaded years ago including the one with the dimensions. Here is a direct link to that album: https://amelyachtowners.groups.io/g/main/album?id=84439 Make sure you have some long extensions and a 30mm socket to undo the top nut on the keel bolt that secure the strap. -- Mark McGovern SM #440 Cara Deale, MD USA
