Re: anyone selling and or have b&g equipment laying around

Hi Eric,

I have a bag full of old / spare b&g stuff including wind and depth. All 2001. I also have a spare NMEA FFD unused and in original box. I am in the process of replacing all electronics. You can have it for the postage price and a bottle of wine.
Beginning next year I will have all B&G electronics replaced. Also available for anyone interested.

I will be on the boat next weekend and can bring it all back home if you like.

Best regards

Re: Slide Hammer

Hi Kent, unfortunately, I have quite a bit of very recent experience with them.  I used to “rent” them from the local auto shops (you pay a full price deposit, use the tool and then return it for a full refund so the rental is gratis).  I’ve used them to pull wheel bearings, CV Joints and wheelhubs out from the very solidly rusted vehicles up here in the Canadian winters (they use a fair bit of salt which makes it somewhat challenging).  Last week, I tried to rent one to pull the gimbal bearing off my Mercruiser Alpha One inboard/outboard sterndrive on our motorboat that my daughter accidentally sunk last summer while Jen and I were away in Europe.  (Don’t forget to put the plug in the boat BEFORE you run it down the railway!)  Anyway,  due to the Covid stuff, they’ve all stopped renting tools so I ended up buying one at the local Princess Auto (our version of Harbour Frieght).  I’ve seen that their version, is the same as what I got.  It's on sale this week for the equivalent of about $60 USD.

I whaled away at that damn gimbal bearing (it’s about a 4” by 1” bearing inside a long tunnel of a race and was VERY severely corroded in there without much luck.  The one I have has a 5 lb slide (the more the merrier) and I let it soak in PB Blaster for about a week and even fashioned using a 4 ton hydraulic jack to try to lever the thing out using the attachments of the slide hammer and a cross bar I built using metal and a 4x4 post…. All I ended up doing was snapping four 3/8” u-bolts like they were made of butter.  I finally gave up and called in the pro.. who showed up with the exact same slide hammer as I had, he put it on and gave it two huge whacks and it came right out!  To be fair to me, I didn’t try it for the 3-4 days before he showed up and it was sitting in PB blaster but he did whale away at it harder than I could (he used very thick gloves which helps cushion the blow).  He said that he’s never had a gimbal bearing stick that he hasn’t been able to get out with that tool.   Here’s the link to what I got. https://www.princessauto.com/en/detail/10-way-slide-hammer-puller-kit/A-p8309262e but I am very sure I saw the same thing on the Harbour Freight website too (PA and HF seem to use the same companies even though they aren’t related).  Normally, I find their cheap Chinese tools don’t stand up well but I was very impressed with how strong this was - especially considering I had a 4 ton jack pulling on those little arms and it didn’t even leave a scratch on them.  My pro has been using the same set for 5 years and says he’s never had an issue with it either.

There aren’t any instruction manuals with it but those three arms go on that black three armed attachment that gets threaded on (after the round disk) to the end of the slide hammer rod.  The round disk, winds down, levering the arms apart so that it can grab the inside race of the bearing… when you have got ALL of the play out of it, you just whale away at it as hard as you possibly can and the shock breaks the bond and out she comes…. DO wear very thick gloves as that thing makes your bones ring!

The good thing is that after a set of plugs, a new distributor cap and the new gimbal bearing, the boat is working perfectly now… love to get you and Iris out for that Canal trip to see our fascinating locks if the damn border ever opens up again!  Enjoy Maine!  I’ve flown over that whole area up there and it’s on my bucket list.

Thanks, Tom.  I just spent an hour yesterday on the phone with PredictWind in New Zealand.  The problem is a VPN connection.  Norton offers a particularly tenacious VPN product that turns on “on demand” which means you can turn it off and it will turn back on by itself.  In the end, I just deleted the Norton VPN from my iPhone and it would then connect immediately to the Iridium GO! Unit.

The whirpool jt 479 is     outer dimensions    379,491,540 depth   inside   is 210,395,370 depth and the turntable is 360 diameter  it would not fit on the shelf where the old one was.

Thanks again for the photos, I am getting some good ideas as I don't think I can buy what we want.

Thank you for the photos, that is one way to make this project work.

I have just found that the New Amel 60 has the Miele electric oven with induction cooktop.(Too big for the space) If I can not find the solution Penny might want upgrade to the Amel 60 instead of the upgrade to lithium. Could be very expensive!

Do you find that your electric oven is big enough? Could you do a Roast Dinner for 6 people using your oven?

I already have a portable induction cook top which is fantastic. Onan muffler reducer

Thomas Kleman

On SM2K 422, the Onan MDKAV uses a Vetus Waterlock LP50. The exhaust line into the muffler is thus 50 mm. The muffler outlet has a 50 to 40 mm reducer which connects to the genset exhaust hose. In buying my spare muffler I want to also have this spare reducer but don't know where to get it. It appears to not be a Vetus product. It looks as though it was glued in as the mufflers outlet tube has no inner threads.......ideas ?

A good laugh at my expense

Mark Erdos

When in an area with low or almost no bars on the cell phone (we use for data), I’ll often put the phone up the mizzen mast to improve the line-of-sight to the cell tower.

On this occasion, I mistied the bowline knot and when I went to pull the phone down, this happened.

phone up mast 1.jpg

So I made this:

phone up mast 2.jpg

It is two boat poles (shown unextended), two pieces of PVC pipe (I had laying about) and a wire coat hanger. This is all held together with duct tape. Cindy put me up the main mast. I extended the boat poles and after a few tries I was able to snag the bag with the phone in it using the coat hanger hook. Pulling the phone toward me, I could then lower it to the deck.

Hi Eric,

Did you end up going with the Aqua King II? Are you happy with it? I'm looking to replace my freshwater pump as well and the Aqua King II premium 4gpm (#4148) or supreme 5gpm (#4158) look like pretty good options. I do not have an accumulator tank.

Also, were you able to wire it so the indicator lamp on the control panel lights up? (Not essential, just curious. Our current pump does not).

Re: A54 fridge circulation pump

Hi Scott,

Hope you are doing well. I've looked into this problem as well. I tried to find an alternate waterpump but the 12 Volt/1-1.5 Amp requirement is not easy to satisfy. Replacing the motor with a brushless one is a very clever idea. Finding a suitable motor is not so easy though. Most of them require some external controller making installation complicated and a bit prone to errors. Also I'm not too happy with an untested motor/controller combo. What happens if this goes south somewhere in the Pacific. So careful selection of fuses is the least to do for this solution.
Personally I would love to find a motor suitable for this application with integrated controller but I'm still searching. Until then I just keep a number of these Flojet pumps on stock and live with the life-expectancy.

Hi all,
I've seen a few posts where people talk about using a slide hammer. I've never used one, but I run across projects regularly where I think one would be useful.  Can anyone guide me in choosing one, size, useful attachments, anything else that might be helpful? I would be using it primarily for projects on the boat.
Thank you for any insight

Hello,

Has anyone heard of a refit using the Yanmar 4LHTE 110HP that is a bigger engine (3.5L) probably with more torque to handle big props?
Although not sure dimensions fit.

Re: A54 fridge circulation pump

We just had another Flojet pump die. This time after 5 months. Even better, it seems the Flojet 4105-343 pump we have been using is discontinued. I will take the leap to try Oliver's brushless pump solution.

Oliver - I just ordered the aliexpress pump/controller that you mentioned and would love to see your video. I sent an email a few months back but never heard back from you. Be great if you could post the fridge pump installation video on Youtube for everyone to see!

One thing that may become an issue is that the diaphragm part of the Flojet pump (which is repurposed for Oliver's setup) is also a wear part. I know someone who uses Flojet pumps in their coffee business and his pumps die when the diaphragms fail. Good thing I have a handful of used diaphragms from my multiple failed Flojets. :)

Anyone else try Oliver's solution (or any other pump) and succeed?

Hi Dave,
We use the Go with iPhones, but not 11.
Could you describe in more detail what the problem is? Does the Iridium WiFi show up as a choice? Password problems? Connected to WiFi but still not working? As much detail as possible, I’d be happy to try and help.

I inherited an Iridium GO! when I purchased my SM2 last year and am just now beginning to use it.  Thanks to PredictWind’s tech support in New Zealand I can get the system up and running with my iPad.  However, my iPhone 11 refuses to connect despite working through everything I could, and tech support, could think of.  Anyone else using an iPhone 11 with the Iridium GO! platform and get it working?  Problems like this drive me nuts.

It is difficult for me to tell why this is happening and it appears that most of these members applied when we were still with Yahoo. You may find it a lot easier to head down to St. Augustine. Great marina, easy sea access and same distance to Jax airport.  Transportation from Fernandina to Jax is iffy at the best.
