Paul, perfect comment!
Danny, I would recommend the use aluminum because of the risk to the foil if you make a mistake...Paul is correct.

I’ve had good first hand dealings with Stan at Beta on my previous boat. He definitely knows his stuff, is quite helpful and was very responsive to get out a comprehensive written quote. It would be nice to share with the group what he quotes you for a “drop in replacement” of the Volvo Penta engine.

Well done Tony - very satisfactory. The AMEL 54 is the finest yacht around at the moment and it is no surprise that they sell.
Good luck and thanks for the introduction to Antoinne Hutter - I will remember that contact.

However our plans have changed and we’re now offering her for sale in impeccable condition, at an attractive price, initially to the Amel community. Significantly discounted price for private sale €400k (vat paid in France from new, UK flagged now). This will likely be increased to circa €440k if offered via broker.
Balthazar was originally specified with the Comfort Plus Pack in addition to the Opacmare hydraulic passerelle & Dessalator 24/240v 100 litre per hour water maker.
Lightly used in the Med, renowned Amel surveyor, Olivier Beaute, concludes his survey of October 2018, stating “a good boat”. Mark,
In my opinion, the biggest issues with a 30 year old Perkins rebuild are: 1.) Too many times only a partial rebuild is done. This can be the fault of the owner or the mechanic. 2.) Finding the "right" mechanic. 3.) Having the guts to cancel the rebuild halfway into it because new issues are found and either the shop was forced to give a fixed bid, or the owner doesn't want to spend more than X. 4.) Because most parts available today are Chinese, the availability of original parts to do the job will force the use of questionable quality parts. 5.) Even if 1-4 work out perfectly for you, the same parts availability issue will haunt you after the rebuild.
I recommend the Beta 85 as the best option available for SMs.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
Thank you all for the really useful information.
I had thought about a rebuild but a lengthy article on Morgans Cloud convinced me that repowering is the better option. The overall conclusion was that a rebuild can very easily go wrong so that you end up repowering anyway.
With regard to the Beta engine, a lot of people seem to shy away from turbo models. I can see that the 85 is a turbo. Is there any reason to avoid turbos? The Perkins is 30 years old and is a turbo and it seems to be just fine.
Next problem is finding a suitable engineer in Southern Spain. -- Mark & Nicky Barter S/V Nunky SM 110

Hi all,
since yesterday I have an oil pressure problem on my AMEL 54#96.
When I go from normal speed to idle, the oil alarm starts.
Of course, this doesn´t happen in the port but between the islands in Croatia.
My German Volvo expert suspects that the oil is too thin.
Diesel has probably gotten into the oil.
That´s why I changed the oil. More than 7 liters of very thin oil came out.
Then the engine ran again without an oil pressure alarm.
But today, when I switched back to idle, the alarm went on again.
I appreciate any advice or experiences.
Thanks a lot,

Re: Main furling motor and gear on 54

ngtnewington Newington
Hi Bill, Yes that is the one. It must have been a typo to sign off 55 sorry.
So I have dissembled the gear box. The shaft that runs vertically through the gearbox and connects to the sail foil has the two lip seals top and bottom that I was trying to change. That shaft would not pull out. It must be corroded in or be a very tight fit.
So I took it to a machine shop. It is aluminium and slightly corroded on place. Popped out with the press. I am glad that I did not try beating it. There was no way that was coming out without the press. There had been water ingress and bearings are rough, the seals gone, however the worm gear looks okay. This is a project that I have been putting off too long, but have the seals and bearing. So easy to re-assemble. Now better do the outhall whilst I am at it. Nick S/Y Amelia AML 54-019

You had me fooled. Your original post stated Amel 55, and the 55 furling assembly does not have a worm!
I believe that your Amel 54 #19 has the earlier version of the mainsail furling motor and gearbox, similar to the last SMs. I am having difficulty understanding why you would try to remove the worm gear before disassembling the gearbox and removing the spur gear. The spur gear will hold the worm gear in place. Maybe I am not understanding? Anyway, I will post some things here that may or may not help.
Here is a disassembled gearbox similar to yours. You can see the worm gear and understand how the spur holds it in place. Also maybe this helps:

Hi guys, I am leaving it overnight soaking in diesel. I tried a puller earlier to push out the shaft but nada. Tomorrow I will apply heat and the puller. If that fails I guess it will need a press. I just wonder why it is not a nice snug fit, not as if it is a ball of rust. Maybe if when it finally yields it does not go back in with a gentle tap, I will have it machines down a thou.....so next timeI can pull it easy as kiss my hand. Nick Slightly fed up with a day of poor progress. Amelia Leros

Nick,
Assuming that the worm gear and the shaft are both metal... I would try heating the component ( I assume this is the worm gear) with the hole to expand it while cooling the other part (the shaft) using ice or whatever you have. Some gentle tapping might be ok.
Best of luck,
James

Whilst COVID has created challenges in all walks of life, it’s evident that sailors everywhere - and none more so than the “famille Amel” - have a resilient and especially ingenious and pragmatic DNA!
Enough effusive ‘gushing’ from me. Thanks to All on the forum and Facebook for the good wishes and I look forward to introducing Balthazar’s new owners when the sale closes.

That will sell in a day if anyone has any sense.

Amel expert and principal of Yacht School, Bill Rouse, was onboard in May 2019 and commented “Balthazar’s condition is in the top 10% of Amel 54’s that I have seen”.
We have only owned Balthazar since October 2018 and hugely appreciate her extraordinary qualities.
Since then we have invested in comfort, safety & preventative maintenance improvements, listed in the attached document and including a full Nav technology B&G upgrade & additional autopilot in July 2020.

It's very easy to open up the windlass and see the magnet on the gypsy. On A54 #69, we have two windlasses, so I just took the gypsy from the port windlass and put it on starboard. There's no counter on port anyways and we barely use it, so the gypsy looked nearly new.
By doing that, you could probably get quite a few more years of life and it will isolate whether the problem is the magnet or the sensor. If you look at the AutoAnchor manual, it shows you how to get into diagnostic mode to determine whether the sensors are getting power. That may help you figure out what's wrong. I suppose there could be wiring issues, but for us, it was easily remedied by swapping gypsies and hence, magnets. Good time to grease up the windlass, too.

Re: Amel 54 2008 Hull 102 for sale in South France
Well, Peter, you were almost correct....it didn’t quite take one day but just a few days to agree the sale of Balthazar!
There was a lot of interest from wonderful folk around the world and I was about to start arranging viewings in Toulon.
Then one couple took the plunge and committed to buying Balthazar unseen, subject to survey of course and wired a deposit. They won’t be disappointed and it’s an absolute pleasure working with them to agree a handover.
Bill Rouse might blush, but there is naturally a ‘circle of trust’ in that the new owners and I are both clients of his. Thank you Bill for ‘oiling the wheels’ - well, Corrosion X’ing them in your case :)
David Crisp (A54 Wilna Grace) deserves a special note of thanks too, for introducing me to Antoine Hutter of Nautiplus Yacht Services, here in Toulon (+33 6 12 66 58 20) - he is hugely experienced in Amel and has been superb at welcoming us to France and rapidly making survey lift out and winter arrangements - he even tracked us on AIS on passage from Corsica, phoned me as we entered the harbour and took our lines for us! Wow. (Side note - I haven’t had an invoice yet....!).
