Topping lift bungee replacement A54
David Crisp
I need to renew the bungee cord in the main boom on my A54. Can someone explain the technique please. The only opening which gives access to the bungee is at the leech end of the boom and that’s pretty limited. There is is no opening at the mast end of the boom.

Re: Oil Pressure Volvo D3 I - C
Smell the oil. If it has a clear diesel scent you are in trouble. In that case the oil level should also raise.
Else the sensor itself may very well be the problem. Also if they used full synthetic oil for the change it may appear thinner then classic oil. Regards, Arno Luijten SV Luna, A54-121

I had the same. In my case it was a faulty Oil sensor switch. When you order a new one look for the right connection. There seem to be two differnt types for the D3 110. My one was part number 863169.

Congratulations Tony. That is a great deal for the new owners. We were also tempted to buy our second 54. You can never have enough spares. Lol.

Well, Peter, you were almost correct....it didn’t quite take one day but just a few days to agree the sale of Balthazar!
There was a lot of interest from wonderful folk around the world and I was about to start arranging viewings in Toulon.
Then one couple took the plunge and committed to buying Balthazar unseen, subject to survey of course and wired a deposit. They won’t be disappointed and it’s an absolute pleasure working with them to agree a handover.
Bill Rouse might blush, but there is naturally a ‘circle of trust’ in that the new owners and I are both clients of his. Thank you Bill for ‘oiling the wheels’ - well, Corrosion X’ing them in your case :)
David Crisp (A54 Wilna Grace) deserves a special note of thanks too, for introducing me to Antoine Hutter of Nautiplus Yacht Services, here in Toulon (+33 6 12 66 58 20) - he is hugely experienced in Amel and has been superb at welcoming us to France and rapidly making survey lift out and winter arrangements - he even tracked us on AIS on passage from Corsica, phoned me as we entered the harbour and took our lines for us! Wow. (Side note - I haven’t had an invoice yet....!).
All interested buyers of Balthazar have been advised by me personally of the sale - I was sorry to disappoint them on this occasion and wish them all well in their search for a fabulous 54. Whilst COVID has created challenges in all walks of life, it’s evident that sailors everywhere - and none more so than the “famille Amel” - have a resilient and especially ingenious and pragmatic DNA!
Enough effusive ‘gushing’ from me. Thanks to All on the forum and Facebook for the good wishes and I look forward to introducing Balthazar’s new owners when the sale closes.

Hi Dirk;
We had a similar symptom, but did not have the thin oil that you are experiencing. So, I do not believe your issue would be the same. As others have suggested, a potential source of diesel in the oil would explain the low viscosity.
In our case, it was the oil pressure switch (sensor). I would recommend removing the oil pressure switch and installing a temporary pressure guage, so you can eliminate the possibility of a bad switch. I believe at idle, you should maintain 1 bar of oil pressure.

Hi all,
since yesterday I have an oil pressure problem on my AMEL 54#96. When I go from normal speed to idle, the oil alarm starts. Of course, this doesn´t happen in the port but between the islands in Croatia. My German Volvo expert suspects that the oil is too thin. Diesel has probably gotten into the oil. That´s why I changed the oil. More than 7 liters of very thin oil came out. Then the engine ran again without an oil pressure alarm. But today, when I switched back to idle, the alarm went on again. I appreciate any advice or experiences. Thanks a lot,
Dirk

Re: Super Maramu Repower
You may not be "allowed" to put that into a boat. However I doubt if anyone will ever notice it though.
What you may need to consider is the weight of these things. Although virtually indestructible that comes at a weight penalty. Also many of those industrial beasts are direct injection. That makes them very fuel efficient but noisy as hell as well. So if you do extensive motoring at times, just to get to you destination (most of us do) then think about the noise. It is a very personal thing but for me engine noise is really annoying. Vibration may be up as well simply because of the way the diesel ignites in the cylinder. Indirect injected engines are much more quiet, unless you go common rail and electronic injection. This is the main reason why the world changed to common rail diesel: you get good efficiency of the direct injected and the noise of a indirect injected. Added bonus is less emissions especially with exhaust gas afer-treatment as commonly done in cars now. Regards, Arno Luijten SV Luna A54-121

I’ve had good first hand dealings with Stan at Beta on my previous boat. He definitely knows his stuff, is quite helpful and was very responsive to get out a comprehensive written quote. It would be nice to share with the group what he quotes you for a “drop in replacement” of the Volvo Penta engine.

Well done Tony - very satisfactory. The AMEL 54 is the finest yacht around at the moment and it is no surprise that they sell.

Re: Super Maramu Repower
Mark, In my opinion, the biggest issues with a 30 year old Perkins rebuild are: 1.) Too many times only a partial rebuild is done. This can be the fault of the owner or the mechanic. 2.) Finding the "right" mechanic. 3.) Having the guts to cancel the rebuild halfway into it because new issues are found and either the shop was forced to give a fixed bid, or the owner doesn't want to spend more than X. 4.) Because most parts available today are Chinese, the availability of original parts to do the job will force the use of questionable quality parts. 5.) Even if 1-4 work out perfectly for you, the same parts availability issue will haunt you after the rebuild. I recommend the Beta 85 as the best option available for SMs. Best, CW Bill Rouse Amel Owners Yacht School +1 832-380-4970 | brouse@... 720 Winnie, Galveston Island, Texas 77550 www.AmelOwnersYachtSchool.com Yacht School Calendar: www.preparetocastoff.blogspot.com/p/calendar.html

On one of our older boats we had the same issue and it turned out to be a leaky front seal on the injector pump pumping fuel into the oil.
