Hi Team,
We have recently replaced our house batteries with 12 x Victron 110amp Gel batteries to give us 660amp capacity. We have Solar set up through a Victron MPPT with 3 x 200w panels We ultimately want to change to Lithium in the future and are making changes to our charging system and to protect the Gel batteries in the meantime. We have recently installed a Victron Skylla i100amp charger as the old Dolphin 100amp could not be programmed to charge Gel batteries. The 30amp shore power charger does have a switch to charge Gel batteries, so we will keep with that for the moment unless any of you advise that we should change that also. The other change we will need to look at is replacing the Lecce-Neville 175amp house alternator as this could potentially overcharge the Gel Batteries. We are looking at different options that would suit the charging of the Gel batteries and also be suitable for charging a Lithium set up in the future. A Balmar alternator has been recommended by one company in New Zealand and we are currently doing some research on this alternator. Ideally we want something that will do the job now and in the future with minimum adjustment to the current alternator bracket and belt system. We are also looking at a Balmar MC614 Max charge regulator so as to regulate the charge to the Gel batteries. Lastly because we kept the Lead acid start battery we will look at installing a Balmar Digital Duo charge to regulate the charge between the two battery types. Has anyone out there done a similar set up or have any advise on best alternator for our system and future compatibility to Lithium. Any advise would be appreciated. Great vidéo informative and entertaining. I understood you went for 12V Lifepo. On the chat it was advised to go for 24V Lifepo that would better balance the cells by the integrated BMS. But then you can’t use it for emergency start of the engine (or the generator) without a 24V to 12V transformer which has added cost and something more to not work when needed the most. is this correct ? Jose, It sounds as though you think it may be a matter of sensors giving you a false reading ,yet you said the exhaust was steaming ,was there other signs of overheating ,like antifreeze or steam pushing past the radiator cap. To bad you don't have a infrared gun, I have two to take readings to make sure they agree . I have not read any mention of the heat exchanger, have you cleaned it ? If it is clogged your temps can be normal at low RPMs and go up quickly with an increase in the RPM. What engine do you have ? If it is a Volvo than I had a overheating issue like I just described and discovered it was a rubber ring/gasket in the H/E . You should find a previous post describing the issue in detail. If you have a Volvo and you cannot find my previous post ,let me know and I will explain about this ring and its function and how if it is missing , your temps rise with the rpms.

Craig, the thermostat does two things. Open the outlet towards the heat exchanger and closes the pathway for recirculation. Removing the thermostat opens the outlet to the heat exchanger but leaves the path for recirculation open. Yes this should reduce the temperature in the sensor but may still leave the engine hotter by allowing recirculation. It is a good temporary solution when you have no spare thermostat. Unfortunately, Bonaire is full and they are not allowing any more boats. Now is even worse since Curaçao has developed a second wave of Covid19. Onle 32 cases but still increasing. Too bad you can't get back to SM Seamaster II. Just heard that Malaysia is closed until "at the earliest" December 31st. Hope this changes, but that was the latest today. There are several boats in Thailand trying to get down to Malaysia, but as you know the boarders are all closed. A friend left Thailand 10 days ago headed to Australia. He got permission to stop for fuel in Malaysia, and in Indonesia. They stopped in Langkawi where they got fuel (30% cheaper than fuel in Thailand) also also arranged to pick up some Alcohol, and a SIM card for data while sailing near Malaysia. Next stop was Belitung Indonesia, where they got fuel (slightly overpriced) and arranged to get some fresh veggies and a SIM card for data while sailing through Indonesia. They may, or may not stop in Lombok, where Ray (Owner of Marina Del Ray) sez ALL boat welcome to stop and stay out of the weather!!! Then when they get to Australia they may have to to the 14 day Q! Marinas in Phuket - Ao Po - Expensive ( About $75US per night for a SM). Plus Elec, and Water. Nice facilities, but not really the place to get your boat serviced) Yacht Haven - Expensive (About $75US per night for a SM). Plus Elec, and Water. Nice facilities). We got some work done here - but was not happy with the work done by an American "electrician?". There are some good trades here, but found most trades to be expensive. They do have a good person to do upholstery here. This is also far from most of the places that sell boat parts. You will have to rent a car 800 B per day, which is a great deal. Phuket Boat Lagoon - VERY EXPENSIVE If you have to ask the price, you don't want to be here. But, they have all the shops for Marine Equipment here. Most of the services are based here. But, over priced! There is also a Marina in Chalong Pier - Don't know the price, but kind of a dump. Should just anchor off the pier when you arrive, and dinghy into the Marina to check in to Thailand. Depending on the weather when you arrive, anchor off the small island Ko Lon, or Next to Cloud 19 Panwa and just a short Dinghy ride to the pier. Then, don't go to a marina unless you have to. Anchor off Yacht Haven and meet up with everyone!!! Krabi Downtown Marina - This is the Budget Marina - If you need a marina, and you want to be next to a small town, this is it. Cheap (about$25 per night), but it's a dump of a marina!!! If you are going to be there for more than 7 nights, better to pay the 5000 baht to become a member. 50% off..... Power is expensive without the 50% off! Krabi Boat Lagoon - This is where I am now. We are getting the bottom completely sanded to Gel Coat, keel down to metal, 2 coats of epoxy barrier coat for the fiberglass, 2 coats of epoxy coat for the metal keel, 2 coats of epoxy primer, 3 coats of ablative antifoul. Also, they are going to re-coat my boot stripe with Gel Coat, not paint. Also, getting the Rub Rail re-gel-coated. Including some other Gel Coat on the hull to make it look new. This will all cost about $5500. I have found this to be a nice place, but out of the way. Cost right not is reasonable because of a 40% discount due to Covid. About $30 per night... Volvo D3 intercooler
Yesterday I discovered a pin hole in the intercooler.
That is it was blowing out air from this tiny hole, to be clear the turbo blows hot compressed air through the intercooler to cool it on its way to combustion. The intercooler is located just below the secondary fuel filter on the starboard side of the engine as mounted in the Amel 54. I increased rpm to get boost pressure and then it really hissed out. The intercooler is cast aluminium, so I have temporarily fixed it with some epoxy weld. I tested it this morning but to only 0.2 bar on the boost pressure so about 1600 rpm and it held. The engine is Volvo D3 110i-A I am after the replacement part number 888513. Does anyone have one to sell? Has anyone experienced this before? Is this a common problem? Does anyone know how potentially serious this problem could be? The turbo is very much a double edged sword, a naturally aspirated engine is just so less complex and costly...if I ever repower Nick Amelia About to haul out Leros AML 54-019

This is a really useful thread.
I have no idea when the water maker was last used but my guess is months and months before we bought the boat. Due to various issues including Covid we were then away from the boat for months. I didn’t know about pickling and regular flushing at that stage so it’s hardly surprising that the water maker isn’t working properly.

From what I can gather you are still in Thailand and on possibly in Port Takola Marina Krabi.
My SM is currently laying in Pangkor Marina and I'm stuck in Perth Australia waiting for the borders to reopen. I'm planning on dropping the masts for repainting while replacing the standing rigging and electronics either in Malaysia or heading to Phuket/Krabi. Do you have any thoughts or recommendations on marinas and services in the area?

In my humble opinion, I would never use an aluminum halyard hook. The possibility of breaking more than a halyard hook is just too great. Instead of breaking a hook, at the price of MAX $80, you could end up with a few thousand $$ in damage. Amel had a reason for making the hook the sacrificial lamb, and this is one part I would NOT change. I broke one, and very happy it broke and didn't take down my rig! I left the halyard on the hook and started to furl, and most of you that broke a hook did the same. I have never had a problem with a hook, unless I F'd up, and with everything that is going on when you are deploying or retrieving your ballooner..... "There is a possibility of making a mistake!". So, don't change the hook material!
I ordered 3 Hooks from Maud last year, and though Amel dosen't keep them in stock, I believe you can get them in a few months. I carry 3 aboard Aquarius. This way if I meet a friend that needs one, I still have a spare. That's the good things about the Amel SM...there are about 480 of us that use very similar parts. If I have something that another Amelian needs to keep going, I am happy to help. JP needed a filter on SM#007, and after a few beers, he talked me out it! I think most of Amelians are the same, we help each other. That's one of the biggest reason I like the Amel SM! Best to All. Ken Powers Aquarius SM2K #262 Still in Thailand...

i got an Icerette from Raritan this year. they have both 110v and 220v models. it is fantastic and makes delicious ice very fast. we keep it off and empty most of the time, then turn it on, first cubes are up in 15 minutes, fills the bucket in an hour. you can also use it as a freezer if you stop the ice maker and remove the bucket. made in New Jersey.

I recently discovered that Amel has a repair kit for foils. According to someone who knows there is enough foil at the top when your Amel was made to cut about 6-7cm off the end twice. Now to the repair kits. You'll need to check with Amel, but I believe that these kits will fit the Main foil on all SMs. Here are instructions for the repair you have discussed and images of the Amel Foil Repair Kit:
