The VOLVO PENTA D3 you have is that generation “H” with 110HP?

Re: Oil Pressure Volvo D3 I - C
Mohammad Shirloo
Hi Dirk;
The pressures you are observing are fine, based our experience. The oil pressure sensor is a simple switch that triggers at a certain oil pressure. I’m not sure what exact pressure, but our engine pressure was slightly over 1 bar at idle and when engine was normal running temperature. When we changed the oil pressure switch, our issue with the low oil pressure went away. I would proceed with caution with the Volvo “expert” that is advising you that 1.3 bars at idle is not enough pressure.
If you are still near Dubrovnik, it should not be hard or take too long to have one shipped from France. We are actually wintering in Montenegro, and have 3 spares on board. If not for COVID, and we were on board, I could have easily sent you one. Because we had actual oil pressure measurements and were confident that we did not have an oil pressure issue, we continued with the alarm popping up from time to time, until we received the pressure switch. Off course, another event could potentially come up that actually leads to low oil pressure during this time, but for us, the risks were acceptable.
Happy Sailing;

Hi Paul, Ralph, Mohammad and Arno,
thank you for your answers and your experience.
We connected an external gauge and the pressure is with cold engine at 2bar at 700rpm (idle) and 4bar at 1500rpm. After 15min. with normal oil temperature (75degree) the oil pressure drops to 1.3bar when idling. And 3 bar at 1500rpm. The Volvo expert thinks, that this is not enough. Actually the oil pressure sensor should not trigger before the oil pressure drops down to 0.7bar. That´s why I think the old sensor is too sensitive…
First I will try it with a new sensor… unfortunately it needs time to get it, and maybe someone of you have some experience with the oil-pressure with a warm engine…
Thanks and take care,
Dirk

New Rub Rail Insert Group Purchase
Patrick McAneny
The time has come to finalize the group purchase of the white rub rail inserts. Presently we have nine owners that are purchasing new inserts. Based on that number their cost should be, based on two 52 ft. lengths ,( you could probably get by with 51 ft. ,your decision . )
104' x $8.90/ft. = $925.00 plus $72. for die = $997.00 total , plus your individual shipping. I will email each owner , but thought this would reach most ,and give anyone else a last chance to order . I want all owners to contact Techno Rubber before the end of this week ,Friday 9/11 to finalize their purchase . After that date a production date will be set ,probably within two weeks or so and the inserts will be shipped . Contact : Techno Rubber Paula or Laura 1 305 888 6324 rubberindustries@... Hi Ken,
I agree, we carry two spare (three in total) for bringing the ballooner down and one spare (two in total) for hoisting - haven't broken any yet. We also carry numerous spares like bow thruster seal kits ... You never know when someone may be in need. Cheers Alan Elyse SM437 - stuck in Opua

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] RPMs and Temperature reading
Patrick McAneny
Jose, Well if your antifreeze is only warm when the gauge reads 225 or higher ,then its obviously not running hot and it is likely a sensor or gauge issue. When you pulled out the H/E core was there a round ring on the core about 3/4 of the way down the core . It is a round ring that slides tightly over the core ,it is about 1/4" larger on the outside ,it closes off a hole inside the H/E housing ,forcing the water to go thru the core ,rather than bypassing the core thus not cooling the water. Take the core out ,then with a flashlight look into the housing and you will see a bulkhead which the core passes thru ,the gasket seals that hole in the bulkhead. Without the core being sealed temps increase at higher RPMs.
Hope this helps ,
Pat

Yes I am going to order 2 infrared guns! Sounds like a good thing to have. I cleaned the heat exchanger in March and the boat sat at Le Phare Blue (Grenada) for 5 months. Also, the temperature gauge read high even at idle RPM. So I think I can exclude the heat exchanger. No, I did not see steam pushing past the radiator cap. There were a few bubbles of air that came out but the antifreeze was only warm. Ipanema has still the original Volvo Penta TM22. Is the rubber ring/gasket the one that looks like a radiator the cap? I will conduct later on a test of the heat sensor to see how accurate it is and compare the temp with that of an infrared gun. So, the saga continues Jose Ipanema SM2K 278

Re: Water maker Questions
I suggest that you need to back up some from your assumptions and take a different approach. First of all, if you pay £500, for SW302521 Filmtec membranes, you are definitely overpaying. They should be about $200USD plus VAT/Freight. There is one membrane manufacturer in the world, so it makes no difference where you buy membranes. Allow me to make a few points:
I suggest that once you put the Dessalator water maker in good working condition that you religiously do the following:
I hope this helps you.

Ross,
You could just install an external alternator controller that will allow you to program the alternator to safely charge either your new AGM or future LiFePO4 batteries. Examples include: Wakespeed WS500: http://wakespeed.com/products.html Balmar MC-624: https://balmar.net/?product=reguor-mc-624-h -- Mark McGovern SM #440 Cara Deale, MD USA

Alternator to house bank charging
Ross Hickey & Donna Hammond
Hi Team,
We have recently replaced our house batteries with 12 x Victron 110amp Gel batteries to give us 660amp capacity. We have Solar set up through a Victron MPPT with 3 x 200w panels We ultimately want to change to Lithium in the future and are making changes to our charging system and to protect the Gel batteries in the meantime. We have recently installed a Victron Skylla i100amp charger as the old Dolphin 100amp could not be programmed to charge Gel batteries. The 30amp shore power charger does have a switch to charge Gel batteries, so we will keep with that for the moment unless any of you advise that we should change that also. The other change we will need to look at is replacing the Lecce-Neville 175amp house alternator as this could potentially overcharge the Gel Batteries. We are looking at different options that would suit the charging of the Gel batteries and also be suitable for charging a Lithium set up in the future. A Balmar alternator has been recommended by one company in New Zealand and we are currently doing some research on this alternator. Ideally we want something that will do the job now and in the future with minimum adjustment to the current alternator bracket and belt system. We are also looking at a Balmar MC614 Max charge regulator so as to regulate the charge to the Gel batteries. Lastly because we kept the Lead acid start battery we will look at installing a Balmar Digital Duo charge to regulate the charge between the two battery types. Has anyone out there done a similar set up or have any advise on best alternator for our system and future compatibility to Lithium. Any advise would be appreciated. Kind regards Ross & Donna SV Intrepid Kiwi SM2K 365 Currently in Turkey

Re: Batteries starting to get weak - MMM - What to do -
Hello Ken,
Great vidéo informative and entertaining. I understood you went for 12V Lifepo. On the chat it was advised to go for 24V Lifepo that would better balance the cells by the integrated BMS. But then you can’t use it for emergency start of the engine (or the generator) without a 24V to 12V transformer which has added cost and something more to not work when needed the most. is this correct ? Thank s Denis Meltem 32
