To check the temperature, you need an infrared heat sensor. Really handy for checking temperature of the various parts of the engine… Nick

Re: Onan 11kw white smoke on running
Normally white smoke is either water or unburned diesel. Maybe it could also be contaminated fuel.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
The main engine I presume is not blowing white smoke??? If the main engine is fine, maybe you could try replacing the fuel filter element on the generator. Does the generator engine function normally apart from the smoke? Does it get up to full operating temperature under load say 80 degrees celcius? Nick Amelia Aml 54-019 Leros Greece

To your point Joel, it looks to me like water in the combustion process some how. Coolant levels look fine. The raw water pump is leaking but I don't know how that could be allowing water in the combustion process.

I don't see any evidence of oil films etc on the water which I'd imagine would be there but everything I can read says white smoke is unburned diesel so I'm surprised there is no sheen/film in the water at all. Still waiting on ONAN to call me back.

Re: Pasarelle / swim ladder SM
OK, here are some photos and also the dimensions of the original plank for the passerelle. The chrome stanchions are ~28” long with a custom eye at the top for the safety line. I think when I make a new plank I’m going to duplicate what I have now. I like the small cross battens for the stability they provide when the plank is wet.

Hi Billy. If the white ‘smoke’ quickly dissipates, it is most likely caused by water getting into the combustion process. If it hangs in the air and leaves a sheen on the water, it is most likely from a petroleum source. I have seen the water caused type come from a blown head gasket. The petroleum caused type usually comes from lubrication oil or a failing injector but I have seen the odd case of the transmission cooler failing and putting transmission fluid into the raw water that eventually gets injected into the exhaust elbow and makes a weird wispy type of smoke. Good luck with it. All the best, Joel

Eric, All of the exploded drawings I have of the MARINA bilge pump from each of the manufacturers that made it, show the motor and gearbox as one part. I assume that you are looking for the Delrin gear inside the gearbox because this is the part that eventually fails. I was able to source this Delrin gear in Turkey from Emek Marine. RIZA <cagdas"at"emekmarin.com>. I believe that he machined them from Delrin. I was also told by another reliable source that this same gearbox is used Mercedes in the 80s. I attempted to find that Mercedes part but failed to do so. Bill

Eric,
There certainly could be given how long the pump appears to have been in production. This is what my pump looks like: Here is the ID plate on the pump: And here is the crank that drives the diaphragm: My AMFA pump appears to be identical to the TF Marine version shown in the diagram. -- Mark McGovern SM #440 Cara Deale, MD USA

Onan 11kw white smoke on running
Billy Newport
Hi
The fun continues on Coder's shakedown cruise. Yesterdays problem were two fold: The generator raw water pump appears to be leaking. Worked this with Bill. The other issue is the generator makes white smoke as it warms up from the dry exhaust. The generator has about 840 hours on it. Has been serviced properly as far as I know. Denis (previous owner) was pretty meticulous. The boat was on the hard for 12 months while being sold but it was winterized, it was recommisioned, surveyed and then we got it in late June. We changed the oil and filters on it after purchase. Oil level looks good (full) and is "clean" on the dip stick. Generator is running with no codes (I have the simple generator panel so no other data). I am trying to get an onan field tech to come to the boat (Port Washington, NY mooring right now). The generator 5 year warranty is still in effect as far as I know. Currently charging batteries with the engine but can't make water with out the gen. Any ideas appreciated. Billy (Amel 55#56)

Re: Genoa furler
Hi Rob,

In my opinion there is nothing particularly skilled in dropping the forestay. Some strength and agility and common sense, and three people minimum. It is easiest in a marina, bow to a long dock to walk the forestay as it is dropped without bending the aluminium furler extrusions too much. I have done it in the water with a couple of dinghies! Not easy. Attach halyard to act as the new forestay Slacken backstays and triatic, unless the halyard acting as the forestay is nice and tight and there is plenty of thread on the rigging screw so that you can completely unload the pin. In which case it may not be necessary. In order to help with this I normally set up a block near the stem head and attach a line with a rolling hitch to the forestay and winch it down until the pin is loose. You will need to go up the mast to tie on another halyard to the forestay and take up the weight such that you can remove the pin.Just like at the bottom but pulling up not down. Then when back at deck level you need three people minimum. One to lower the halyard holding the forestay weight, one to guide the stay over the bow and one to walk it along the dock. It will be heavy and take quite a bit of pull to keep it from bending too much. Nick Amelia AML 54-019 stored ashore Leros

We have taken ours off three times and our advice is , with great caution! Great that you will have professionals with you! You don’t need to loosen the side stays just the rear ones and the one from the main mast to the mizzen mast . We marked the original position and loosened till it was still catching, but only just. If you do not need to service the furler then you don’t need to release it from the foil, we did that when we took the masts down to repaint and replaced all the stays. But you will need space to do that so as not to bend the foil. If you do need to release the furler there are screws to release it.We are off the boat for coffee at the moment, when we get back we can let you know which screws. All the best, Helen and Kosta on SM 29 of 1990

Re: converting 24v alternator to ribbed micro v (serpentine)
Dominique Sery
Hello,
When I bought my boat in 2017, the broker told me that the Neuville 24 volt 175 amp double V-belt alternators originally installed on the first 54 were recalled by Amel for exchange with the Mastervolt 24 volt 110 amp flat belt alternators with Volvo mounting bracket, due to recurring problems with the belts, misaligned pulleys, mismatched?
Changing the pulleys is worth a try, it will be much cheaper than buying a Mastervolt alternator, the pulley, the Alpha pro regulator, the Volvo mounting bracket (about 2000 euros the whole).
The 54 that I bought ( 54 # 16) benefited from the change supported by Amel, I've been told.
There was no problem with the Supermaramu equipped with Neuville alternators, but the engines were different from the first Amel 54

Ah, Nick you've got me again!
Subtle differences between SM and 54. Yes clearly a design issue. Belt manufacturers specify minimum pulley diameters for each section belt and the minimum for B section is generally half again what is specified for A section Cheers Alan Elyse SM437

Main mast Antennas
There is a piece of cable hanging from the top of the main mast mast. Any idea if Amels have been originally delivered with two antennas on the main mast? I have one on the main mast that is fine and is for the VHF radio. There is one on mizzen for AIS. The second one on main mast would be for FM/AM radio?
