Hi Mark,

I once ruined a set of membranes by putting chlorinated dock water in the boat and then back flushing.  Since then any shore water that goes into the boat first goes through a “whole house” filter that removes chlorine.  To check this, I have test stripes that measure the amount of chlorine in water.  The test kit is sold in tropical fish stores.  My filters are over 10 years old.  I have been told that the more the filters are used, the longer they will last. When I don’t use the water maker much, the TDS goes up toward 300.  When I use the water maker for my total supply off-shore or in a very clean harbor, the TDS goes back down toward 200.

I agree with the comments.   I also run the water without pressure for several minutes when I turn it on to get all the fresh water from the back flushing out. I agree with Alan that the pressure with fresh water could be damaging.

If I were you I would sort out the raw water pump leak, change the fuel filter and then run it at full load for a few hours and see how it performs.

I'm going on the fact there is water not diesel in the dry exhaust. The main engine is fine. The gen raw water pump is leaking a little. The raw water thru hull looks weak. The generator worked correctly despite the white smoke (watermaker/water heater/both battery chargers). I haven't use it since I saw the smoke. The coolant level looks normal to me in the expansion tank (half way between cold and hot).

  • I will change the gen fuel filter after checking for water in it. If thats it then great.
  • I will change the impellor and o-ring, hopefully, it's all there. Otherwise thats why the raw water outlet is poor.
If I still have white smoke at that point then it's time for a tech. Working today so I'll get to this Sat.

Mine was delivered new with two antennas on the main mast.  One was connected to the VHF and one to the FM radio.  Both are still there.

There is a piece of cable hanging from the top of the main mast mast. Any idea if Amels have been originally  delivered with two antennas on the main mast? I have one on the main mast that is fine and is for the VHF radio. There is one on mizzen for AIS. The second one on main mast would be for FM/AM radio?

I assume that you are looking for the Delrin gear inside the gearbox because this is the part that eventually fails.

I was able to source this Delrin gear in Turkey from Emek Marine. RIZA <cagdas"at"emekmarin.com>. I believe that he machined them from Delrin. I was also told by another reliable source that this same gearbox is used Mercedes in the 80s. I attempted to find that Mercedes part but failed to do so.

Possibly leak around the motor head gasket ???

Symptoms that indicate a defective head gasket are white or light blue smoke coming from the engine, low engine coolant and oil, a leak in the muffler or gasket. extension vessel, or mayonnaise that has formed on the oil filler cap.

To your point Joel, it looks to me like water in the combustion process some how. Coolant levels look fine. The raw water pump is leaking but I don't know how that could be allowing water in the combustion process.

If anyone is interested, I have a slightly used turbo and elbo for a Perkins Prima M80T.  They both have less than 5 hours on them.  I unfortunately had replaced them right before finding out my engine was toasted beyond repair.

Hi Billy,

To check the temperature, you need an infrared heat sensor. Really handy for checking temperature of the various parts of the engine…

Normally white smoke is either water or unburned diesel. Maybe it could also be contaminated fuel.

The main engine I presume is not blowing white smoke???

If the main engine is fine, maybe you could try replacing the fuel filter element on the generator.

Does the generator engine function normally apart from the smoke?

Does it get up to full operating temperature under load say 80 degrees celcius?

I don't see any evidence of oil films etc on the water which I'd imagine would be there but everything I can read says white smoke is unburned diesel so I'm surprised there is no sheen/film in the water at all. Still waiting on ONAN to call me back.

OK, here are some photos and also the dimensions of the original plank for the passerelle.  The chrome stanchions are ~28” long with a custom eye at the top for the safety line.  I think when I make a new plank I’m going to duplicate what I have now.  I like the small cross battens for the stability they provide when the plank is wet.

Re: Onan 11kw white smoke on running

Hi Billy. If the white ‘smoke’ quickly dissipates, it is most likely caused by water getting into the combustion process. If it hangs in the air and leaves a sheen on the water, it is most likely from a petroleum source. I have seen the water caused type come from a blown head gasket. The petroleum caused type usually comes from lubrication oil or a failing injector but I have seen the odd case of the transmission cooler failing and putting transmission fluid into the raw water that eventually gets injected into the exhaust elbow and makes a weird wispy type of smoke. Good luck with it.

All the best,

Joel

Subject: [AmelYachtOwners] Onan 11kw white smoke on running

Hi
The fun continues on Coder's shakedown cruise. Yesterdays problem were two fold:

The generator raw water pump appears to be leaking. Worked this with Bill.
The other issue is the generator makes white smoke as it warms up from the dry exhaust.

The generator has about 840 hours on it. Has been serviced properly as far as I know. Denis (previous owner) was pretty meticulous. The boat was on the hard for 12 months while being sold but it was winterized, it was recommisioned, surveyed and then we got it in late June. We changed the oil and filters on it after purchase. Oil level looks good (full) and is "clean" on the dip stick.

Generator is running with no codes (I have the simple generator panel so no other data).

I am trying to get an onan field tech to come to the boat (Port Washington, NY mooring right now). The generator 5 year warranty is still in effect as far as I know.

Currently charging batteries with the engine but can't make water with out the gen.

Any ideas appreciated.
