Re: Credit when credit is due

Amel is ranked above all other boat builders in terms of supplying parts to boats built 20+ years ago. I agree and it is one of the reasons that Amel owners support Amel and have given Amel this special reputation. This special reputation sells new Amels and will allow Amel continued success. It is in the BEST interests of all Amel owners to support Amel SAV and all of the people that support us every day.

Hi Eric,

Thank you for recognizing Thiery and the factory like this. I will concur with your appreciation of Thiery, Maud, and the entire Amel factory team in relation to how they care for Amel owners, even though some of our boats left their factory so long ago.

We had the exact same experience with Thiery and the factory team in April 2018. We were in a very remote part of the Maldives Islands, about to sail for Chagos, Rodrigues, and then cross the Indian Ocean, when we had to replace the entire leg of our bow thruster. At that time I got Thiery and Maud on our satphone (whilst the factory was under significant pressure to get 55's out) and learned that they had zero spare Super Maramu 2000 bow thrusters in stock. Long story short ... Thiery arranged everything, even stopping a busy section of the factory to prioritize making us a complete fresh new thruster then urgently air freighted it into Male for us, all in 3 weeks, along with a new underwater fitting tool and required spares so that I could replace the thruster in the water in a remote atoll!!

What a champion Thiery is, and this goes to the very heart of the entire Amel philosophy of superior Quality and Customer Care! At the time Island Pearl II (2001) was already 16 years old, and yet Amel factory was still prepared to prioritize our job at our time of real need, with weather windows closing, our overdue Chagos stay window diminishing,  and the prospect of crossing the often dangerous Indian Ocean with a hole where the thruster should be! You could simply imagine how appreciative we were as a month later we hit 3 wild days mid-Indian Ocean of 55kts winds and white out conditions with 6m swells between Chagos to Rodrigues.

Bravo Amel! Also, since this was our 7th cruising yacht, from experience with other well known brands, we know for absolute certain that none of the other manufacturers would have done this for a client on a 16 year old boat under her 2nd ownership! Simply amazing stuff from an amazing company!

Although we have since sold, and are land-based working for the next 5 years, we will certainly be back!

Re: Problem with bowthruster

Willem Kroes

Hello Eric, Thierry and Paul,

October 2018, I had the same problem with the bow thruster and I ordered the kit from Amel. The mechanic of the Ascar boatyard in Cartagena (Spain) complained that the new endcap did not fit well. In any case, the holes were not on the same spot. Therefore he used the old endcap. After using the bow thruster not more than 12 times it failed again in the spring of 2019. Same problem as before. I sailed to Preveza in Greece and looked for a mechanic who was familiar with Amel boats and with the Amel bow thruster. I found such a mechanic at the Aktio boatyard (Mr Markus). With the Amel special tool, I managed to get the foot on to the deck and took that to the Aktio boatyard. The conclusion of Mr Markus was that there was too much play on the gears and the mechanic in Spain failed to check this. According to Mr Markus, it was not a problem to use the old endcap, but then shims were needed to get the amount of play down. After communication with Maud on this, she came back to me after consulting the Amel technicians, and they confirmed that with the old endcap, shims had to be used. So I ordered, with a small discount Maud granted me, another kit for the bow thruster foot. Mr.Markus told me the new endcap included with this kit was deeper inside than the old cap and therefore, reducing the amount of play to be within the margin of tolerance. In the new endcap, the holes were right on the spot.

So, it seems that there was a difference between the endcap as part of the kit they sold before when the boat was in Spain and the endcap as part of the second kit.

I think this is an important point to check with Amel before ordering a new kit.

Best regards,

Re: 24 v main switch

Jose,

Should be? According to who? 😀

I believe that Amel has connected the chargers to the battery side of the main switches for some time. I know that at least some Amel 54 switches were wired with the 24v Alternator on the load side.

I will let a marine electrician answer the "should" question, but I believe that you could have a problem if the chargers were wired to the load side and you had shore power ON, Charger ON, and the Main Switches OFF. Again, I will leave the last word to a marine electrician.

I have attempted to illustrate a typical battery switch.  Any help with improvements in the illustration below will be appreciated. Note, I said "typical." The negative main switch should basically have the same connections at the same poles.

It is indeed the way it is..  also the same for the 110v inverter.  I, in upgrading to my Lipo / Victron added fuses and a switch for the charging devices and the inverter.

Re: Victron Quattro charger/inverter installation

Jose Venegas

Hi James,
Great to know you are in Cartagena.  We are in Curazao waiting for the port of Cartagena to open, which theoretically will be next week but it has been delayed several times.   I decided to buy a 5 kW inverter and install it outside of the engine compartment.  See https://amelyachtowners.groups.io/g/main/message/55033.  It made it much to deal with the 60 50 Hz issue to buy a new charger and rewire it using the connections of the old 30 a battery charger.
Also, while doing the work within the engine compartment, I wired a double fan to blow into the engine compartment that kept me less hot while I was doing the work in the engine room.  Mounting an inverter-charger in the engine room requires to pass very large cables from the engine compartment to the battery box.  (The Victron Phenix inverter required 2 1/0 gauge cables for each positive and negative poles.  Mounting the inverter near the batteries avoids the problem and you only need to pass the 220V 20 amp 3 wires cable, not an easy task but much easier than passing the 4 DC cables.

Hope to see you soon,

Good morning Eric,

In 2017, I had a similar happening with the bow thruster.

High pitch sound and no propeller turning….

The gear also did not look that bad.

http://supermaramu2000.com/bow_thruster_spin.html

Previously I had purchased from Amel the Tufnol shaft, but the one I received was not the one I had on the boat…. Pictures I sent to Amel at the time:

http://supermaramu2000.com/bow_thruster_tufnol_shaft.html

Maud told me at the time, that they did (from memory) 3 models/size/gear dimensions.

So, I opt to purchase the complete kit:  Amel part 1110 - called in French “MECANISME PIED DE PROPULSEUR SM”

Which you can see at the bottom of the page:

http://supermaramu2000.com/spare_parts_bow_thruster.html

When I received it, I was a bit disappointed that I had to re-machine one of the gear to fit the key.

So back to your issue, I believe that Amel sent you the wrong gear dimensions.

Either measure the gear to have to give them, or purchase the complete kit (small and big gear).

Hope that help, sincerely, Alexandre

Below  is the answer from AMEL—I wonder if anyone else had the same problem. I had to order an entirely new kit.

I also had to redrill the holes in the end cap. I noticed that the thickness of the back if the new cap was 2mm higher than my old cap.

When they drilled and tapped the cap the drill and tap ran into the cap material inside. I thought that was odd at the time.

I think this was the problem. I believe there are a number of bad end caps. The gears in the photos have about 15 minutes on them.

The pair that I changed out after 18 years looked better.

Unfortunately I cannot discuss this at length with Amel as I am leaving Wednesday for the Caribe.

I would love to hear from any other owners who have or had the same problem with a new kit.

Please keep me posted..

Dear Eric

Sorry to read such trouble.

The bow thruster mechanism kit is in used since years without having heard about similar problem.

The only way is to send you again a new complete kit (we can’t mismatch the parts )  and to be fair a 20% commercial discount will be granted.

If agree please confirm where to send it

With my kindest regards

We had the same issue I bought a new kit from Maud this summer, put everything together, but the new lid did not fit with the old screw holes , so I used the old lid, looked very similar to me.
I tried it when finished with, it worked. Next time when we were to go up on the hard the thruster motor is spinning but not the prop, a great disappointment. Have not digged into it further as have other project ongoing, My guess is that the new shaft is too "short". Further the shaft had a very rough surface so all oil has leaked out by now. Will sand it down to a smooth surface when at it.

Re: LiFePO4 Conversion on sv BeBe - SM#387

Hi José,

I think they are willing to deliver also to the USA. I don't know what import regulations exist and what the import tariff is.

All these companies are offering guaranties (1 or 2 years, but it is worth to negotiate the terms).

Bill Rouse is right that there some factories using polluted substances and this can result in a catastrophe, such as meltdowns or even a fire. On the other hand also with lead-acid batteries, there are lots of cases with big problems. Bear also in mind that Lithium-Iron-phosphate batteries are less vulnerable to fire-risks and also in general much more stable than lead-acid ones. Also, notice that LifePo4 batteries don't contain dangerous chemicals, such as lead-acid batteries do.

Ask for testing reports, such as for the CE certificate. It took me weeks daily emailing with the representative, asking for testing reports, references of other clients, numbers of batteries exported to which countries etc.  I ordered also 2 extra BMS modules and they put these in 2 extra cases. The extra cost of this was around 90 US dollars.

Doing business with the interference of Alibaba can result in a guaranteed contract and you will not lose your money in the event the factory fails to deliver the batteries on board of the container vessel.

I the best practise is to do the research, the negotiating, the contract procedure and the import procedure with a group of boaters together. This will save a lot of money and work.

I recently rebuilt my bow thruster, . Upon leaving the dock today my bow thruster  did not work and made a whirring noise. When I took it apart I saw that the gears were worn. My gears on my old bow thruster did not look that bad after 18 years of use. I know I assembled it correctly. My thinking is that the new end cap that I received from Amel with the rebuild kit is too deep and allows the gears to move apart and not mesh properly. Any Thoughts?

As a p.s., when i received the new end cap the mounting holes did not line up with my bow thruster. I simply drilled and tapped 2 new holes.
