Re: Port side Front Navigation Light unreliable
Hello a few more tips, I did this job last year. The backing plate on SM#387 was iron and very corroded from moisture that had run down inside the stanchion. I had to break and grind enough of the corroded iron first. I still couldn't budge the wire. Went home for Christmas, came back a couple of weeks later and I was able too work the wires out. I took the port side wire out first and then tackled the longer starboard side wire. Second tip: if you have not replaced your bow locker floors yet, then put a supportive board in there to hold your weight. Or you might be adding that to your list of improvements (I picked up that tip from another SM owner who replaced their wires). Third tip: if you do run into a frustrating situation then I suggest you to a search in this Amel forum and you will find lots of supportive posts on the project. Good luck, Daniel Carlson on sv BeBe, SN#387, currently near Great Bird Island, Antigua

Re: SSB Not Receiving - IC M801
Hello,
how about PTC II, is it sending and receiving? On my previous boat I had IC802 with tuner and Pactor SCS. How far were the boats you have been testing the transmission? What happens when you push TUNE? You should have a sound of relays and then on display Tune or THRU. With this one can manually adjust the transceiver to tuner. If there is TRHU tuner is not calibrated to the frequency. I am not sure if this has any effect when receiving. On 802 there was clear sign that transmission is on when one was transmitting. Sorry for more questions than answers at this point of time. Regards -- Slavko SM 2000 #279 Bonne Anse in Portoroz

SSB Not Receiving - IC M801
Chris Likins
Hi All,
I will not pretend to be an expert on HF/SSB because I am very far from it! On my Amel 54 I have an IC-M801 SSB with SCS PTC II Pactor modem.
I seem to be able to transmit just fine as other boats can hear me, however, I am not able to receive anything. Squelch and NB are off, the RF Gain is turned all the way up to 9 and AGC is ON. Nothing but static. I'll also note that the antenna current indicator (little black bars) do not appear at all, even when transmitting. I have checked all the connections and wiring at the tuner and transceiver and I cant see anything thats loose or corroded.
I really feel like this is almost certainly user error on my part and likely something simple like a setting in the unit itself. Can anyone point me in the right direction for receiving trouble?
Thank you! A54 #133

Re: Waterleak
Another way to skin the cat - tape plastic over the inside of a large area like windows, put in a hole and blow in air from small shop vac, Leave air running and spray diluted dish soap on outside and watch for bubbles. Great for hairline leaks. Then apply "Captain Tolley's (Amazing) Creeping Crack Cure". Guaranteed!

Re: Port side Front Navigation Light unreliable
FYI, The Belden Cable I recommend is round and is .222" or 5.6mm in diameter. Available on Amazon in 50 foot and 500 foot rolls. I think I bought a 500 foot roll and ran out.

One bit of advice- finding a leak on a boat would be easy if it never heeled or stressed during sailing. But since it does, the path of the leak can appear uphill or circuitous when moored or at anchor. We use baby powder in strategic places to try to trace the path of the liquid. Works well.

Re: Any SM owners use a Beta engine??
Good day Amel lovers,
Thank you very much for your response. I am afraid that the Beta 60 will be removed from the range. I just think that our Maramu and the Beta 60 can form a good couple. Bill, I also e-mailed you in person for the discount that I might be able to receive through you at Beta. Thank you again for this.

Dennis Johns
"Alternators are highly reliable". If that were the case you would never see alternator/generator repair shops. I've had my Maramu for 19 years and have replaced the house alternator three times. It's electronic and the marine environment is not kind to electronics. Each time my alternator has failed, all I had to do is switch the batteries to "both" until I arrived somewhere the alternator could be rebuilt (the alternator recharging the starter batteries could handle the entire battery bank -slowly but it could do it). Never underestimate the value of redundancy, I'm quite sure Henri didn't. Dennis Johns Maramu #121

Re: Any SM owners use a Beta engine??
I believe the Beta 85 is a good choice for the SM or the 54. This engine does not have a computer with multiple sensors and is made with a reliable Kabuto 4 cylinder diesel engine. Several of my clients have purchased Beta engines and have had mostly expected results. The Beta 60 is going away, so if you are interested in the Beta 60 for a Maramu or Santorin, act quickly or you will miss out. Thank the EPA. My clients enjoy a significant discount from Beta. Email me if you want more information. Bill

Dirk,
I can't think of a good reason to have two separate 12V alternators. Charging a separate engine battery and a house battery bank can be handled in many less complex ways. Alternators are generally highly reliable, so a redundant system really isn't much benefit. If you will have a lead-acid battery for the engine, with your lithium house system, a battery-to-battery charger would be the way to go. That way you can program the B-to-B charger to match the charging profile needed by the other battery chemistry. So... I would definitely go with the single large alternator. Having Beta do the install is a lot simpler, since the PTO on the engine will be all set up for the heavy loads of the large alternator with brackets and mounting points all using their standard engineering. Re: Any SM owners use a Beta engine??
Good day Amel lovers,
We are also planning to replace our perkins with a Beta 60 on our Maramu. We also plan to replace our batteries for 8 x 100 Ah lithium batteries. Is it sufficient to have one 175 Amp, 12 Volt Alternator installed on the engine by Beta marine or is it better to install a 175 Amp, 12 Volt Secondary Domestic Alternator separately in addition to the standard 70 Amp, 12 Volt Alternator?
I would like to know from Amel lovers who also use a Beta 60 which Aternator configuration they have applied to their Beta 60.
Ps: what a great forum this is. My thanks to all those who make this forum possible.

Jose,
The O rings might look good, but still a good idea to change them out if you haven't already done so. Make sure you put a lot of grease on the shaft before you put it back in the hole. Ken Aquarius SM2K#262

Re: Water ingress
There is one more possible source. Call it #7. It is the hose and its connections from the anchor locker. The anchor locker hose is connected to a T fitting in the floor near the Depth Sounder. It is about a 25mm hose. Follow it back to the anchor locker, checking the hose and its connections.
