The best mod hands down we inherited from our wonderful previous owner: an aft cabin conversion into a single wall to wall bed taking normal mattresses and bigger than king size bed. For a three person marriage, it just about sold the boat for us. 

Another brilliancy was to put a waeco freezer in place of the nav station stool...with a solid enclosure and a cushion on top, it rocks.

We cut out the admittedly beautiful table leg wine holder, and replaced it with two robust pistons to convert it into a huge daybed/guest bed/movie couch, with a 40 inch screen opposite. Also wonderful. We usually eat in the cockpit, or on our laps, so we have raised it maybe twice in 3 years. We enjoy our movies so that mod was pretty necessary, sitting around the table for film nights got old in about 2 weeks. All the bilge space was preserved underneath, and the wines are in a milk crate under one side of the seating. 

A tiny mod I did immediately which has been replicated at least once for being so handy: I cut out a 3/4 inch half circle from the top of the bin holding the shower hose...that old hose is precious, and now it can be out without getting squashed by the lid. There is no need for that to be 1000 percent watertight as the SM cockpit stays dry. 

Edit: another ESSENTIAL to us mod our po made: two additional hatches in the roof of the aft cabin. I don't see how people survive summer without it. One over the head, the other in line with it over the entrance. We pull the back of the dodger out over the sundeck with a line in the rain, and can keep these open under almost monsoon rain. Gets the steam out of the shower in 30 seconds too, and they face forward to scoop air on anchor. Absolute must for us... 

We installed a litter box under the galley sink, but I don't think anyone here is interested in that 😅

On S/Y Lady Annila we have changed to electrical stove and oven, built a drawer cabinett in the wardrobe area next to nav table, added an extra shelf for the nav. computer above the nav tabke, added a smaller table in the cocpit,  cut some 10 cm off the extension cushion and board in the forward cabin to gain some extra floor space when it is in use. 
So not so much.

Didn’t you and Karen also install a hatch on the aft cabin deck just aft of the mizzen mast?  I absolutely remember being fascinated by your innovative mizzen traveller adjustment (just like the main traveller) and thought that I remembered noticing that you had an extra hatch that I hadn’t seen on other Super Maramus.

It's not a long list, we are pretty happy with Capt Henrie's choices.

Did you pack the back of the lip seal with grease and install it with the edge covered in silicone sealant, with a lithe over the front edge of the seal?

I have new gears, new shaft and a new lip seal, all from Amel, and it leak badly,  the new shaft surface was rather rough, I have now smooth it with 2000 grit paper, hope that will improve situation. I will install with a new lip Seal and gear oil and see how it work, else I might try Dannys on Ocean Pearl way on doing it

The "Amel Owners Insurance Team" consisting of Teun BAAS, Kent Robertson, Ken Powers, Brent Cameron, David Kurtz, David Vogel, and JB Duler have been "working to come up with a Group Insurance Offering for Amel sailboats that recognize that Amel yachts are a safer and less risky offering than other sailboats and that might represent a safer bet for Insurance Companies to cover." I know well many of the Amel Owners Insurance Team: Teun BAAS, Kent Robertson, Ken Powers, Brent Cameron, David Kurtz, David Vogel, and JB Duler. Most are clients of my Amel Owners Yacht School. Many of you know that I also attempted to do this about 18 months ago and was not able to get any underwriters interested. But, I believe that if at first, you do not succeed, try again and again. 

I believe if this Amel Group Insurance Offering can be accomplished it could be very good for Amel owners to be part of a group in dealing with insurance companies, and today, even more important. Today, it is not the price that is most important, but rather the policy terms and how the claim is handled. There are too many stories of insurance companies refusing to pay a claim. You should know that I don't believe that underwriters will necessarily look at Amel owners as lower risk than others. Underwriters will learn that Amel owners actually sail their boats and log many more miles than others in different brand boats. Underwriters will consider this a RISK and probably not necessarily offer lower prices. However, the benefits of Group Leverage are worth paying more because when you have a claim or if you have some other issue, you are not just an individual, but an individual within a large group. I believe there are many challenges that will need to be overcome, including the higher risk of more miles above, and the venue and governing laws because the Group is made up of Europeans, Americans, Brits, Australians, Kiwis, and the other nationalities. Even some states, divisions, and territories want to regulate insurance purchased by people within their borders. That said, I really hope something can be accomplished. Amel Owners Insurance Team needs your help.

You might have answered that question before but I was wondering if we could find the make of your batteries in Europe ? They seem to be 300a/h in 24v a piece ??
I was planning to upgrade to only 600A/h LifePo4 which would be more then my 660 A/h with 12 AGM 110/12v but you seem to think 900a/h is better ...!

Llike Paul, I used a mix as well.  I put some waterproof lithium grease on the gears then filled it with the proper amount of Gear Oil.

It is very important that the part of the shaft that touches the lip seal be as smooth as possible.  If there is a slight abrasive spot on the shaft it send the lip seal to an early grave.  If there is a nick in the shaft, like I had a few years ago, the oil will drain out within a few months.  If this happens to you, your gears will probably be OK, but the bearings will rust out.  When this happens, you won't notice anything until you try to 1) remove the lower end of the bow thruster and find it is completely rusted to the the motor, or 2) you try to use the bow thruster and it blows out everything.  I was lucky I found the problem when I did.  The bearing were just about frozen.  A few more months in the water and I would have had a $2000 to $3000 problem.  Lucky!

I take Aquarius out of the water every years, and when I do I remove the lower end of the bow thruster and check the fluid.   This is one of the reasons why I didn't put Copper Coat on Aquarius.  I plan to Take Aquarius out of the water every year to check the bottom carefully.

Hi Paul,

I use a mix of gear oil and grease that has overcome the propensity for the lubricant to leak out at the lip seal on the bow thruster propeller shaft. The mix has to be liquid enough to work its way to the bottom. I insert it with a plastic tube thin enough to fix down beside the driveshaft attached to a squeeze bottle. Has served me well for 10 years.

I completely agree with Bill Kinney. You will find a few people who have used grease without any issue. Remember, a few successful changes or modifications prove nothing. The bow thruster design requires gear oil.

Ulrich, I think they called them rubber boots but I don't remember. When I ordered, I ordered the joysticks and boots separately. That is the way they work.
Again, the name is APEM.

This is the reference to one of the ones I ordered: SILICONE BOOT FOR 600H SERIES - JOYSTICK plus APEM DPDT Toggle Switch, (On)-Off-(On), Panel Mount

Hope that helps get you pointed to the right terminology RS uses.
