Re: Searching for outdoor, motion activated 24V LED light for stern arch

Matt,
As it relates to this, seems you're light years ahead of me! I don't need a wide nor a long range, in fact, I want it to only cover the transom area or perhaps the lazarette area. The Digital switch sounds fantastic! If you figure it out and find a way to implement it, please let us know. I know it would add to cost and likelihood that it will fail, but it'd be great if you could do it without running control wires. Perhaps a bluetooth/wifi activated relay to switch on the lights? -- Scott 2007 A54 #69 SV Tengah http://www.svtengah.com

Greetings all,
While cruising Mexico’s Pacific coast this year I had the Garmin Pan optic PS-51 forward sonar start to behave irregularly and ultimately overheat and fail. Garmin replaced it on warranty but I spent several weeks anchoring about in different bays with no depth readings available at the helm. My take-away from this experience is to have a back up available whether it be an on-board spare replacement transducer, or a complete functioning back up system. BTW: a toilet plunger with a diver underneath worked great for minimizing the water entry when we exchanged the transducer. Peter de Groot La Querida SM207 Barra de Navidad, Mexico

Re: Searching for outdoor, motion activated 24V LED light for stern arch
We have a motion activated solar light on the arch. It works well. However, the motion sensor is sensitive. You must ensure there is nothing back there to constantly trip the sensor. If you keep your dinghy in the water overnight then the sensor can be activated by the dinghy itself or the davit lines.

Re: Searching for outdoor, motion activated 24V LED light for stern arch

Scott,
I am still building my marine experience, so you are far ahead of me. From a terra-firma perspective, motion sensors are used for their greater range verses IR sensors. IR sensors tend to get pretty expensive to pick-up a person/animal in a large back yard in the US. I like your security idea, and by no means was intending to insinuate you eliminate that option. My thought process was that a 4-6 output IP68 digital switch (~$200) would give you many options to do both with flexibility and ease of install/maintenance. For example, you could use the digital switch to: 1. Turn the light on manually with a simple wifi gateway and your cellphone (tender arrival) or some external device (i.e. FOB) 2. Turn the light on with a motion/IR sensor as a first alert sensor when on the boat (when you are on the boat) 3. Turn the light on when unwelcome guests board, but also send you a cellphone alert if the companionway hatch is opened (when you are away form the boat) 4. Send a cellphone alert if your bilge is running at a set 'excessive' rate Maybe more than you want to take on, just what I have been noodling lately as an option for Talia. Matt SM#209 - Talia

Re: Searching for outdoor, motion activated 24V LED light for stern arch

Matt,
My understanding was that passive infrared sensors, the type normally used, detect heat emitted by humans/animals, not motion. Some of them have sensitivity adjustments too, just haven't been able to find a 24v one! The human detection part is to detect both us and unwelcome guests. :) Your solution could work if you don't need the unwelcome guest detection. Make sure it's well sealed against the elements and won't go crazy with all the interference on a boat. Our Simpson davits came with a remote controller and the receiving unit would sometimes randomly lift or lower the dinghy. -- Scott 2007 A54 #69 SV Tengah http://www.svtengah.com

Re: Depth Sounder Replacement in a SM 2000
I think all of the B&G Hydra depth transducers installed when SMs were new were 38mm. B&G makes a 51mm 2" depth transducer that is also forward looking sonar. Something to think about with a new B&G System Your wallet might suffer. But I know I would love to have this with a new B&G suite.

One more thought on this. It is a good idea to add washers to the screws holding on the deck light part. My new one was slapped with the halyard and came apart (made in China). The screws pulled through the plastic housing.

Hi Tim,
Mine fit perfectly and the holes aligned. 3 wires – easy peasy. It is mounted with pop rivets. I carefully drilled out the old ones and had no issue getting the new one to align.

Chris,
I cannot speak to your hull number (we need Bill's expertise). We are hull number 209. The AMEL installed transducer at the fwd head is 38mm diameter. The new transducer (DST810 and DX900) is 51mm diameter. I refuse to leave the old thru hull, so I will oversize the exiting for the new install. Matt SM209 Talia

I am changing my navigation electronics at the moment. I ordered the Airmar UDST800, no moving parts, less power consumption than the DX900 (125mA instead of 400mA) and i think as cruiser i don't need necessarily to mesure the lateral speed through the water.

So, from your experience you think I will have to replace my ST850 P17 houseing to accomidate the DST800 I linked or the DST810? It says ut us a 2" houseing. Chris

I bought the same light for my steaming and deck light, but have not installed it yet. It will not fit the same holes, and due to the fact that the SM has the Deck light mounted lower than the Steaming light, the wiring will also need a bit of work. So, expect to do a bit of rewiring, and new mounting holes for the rivets on your new LED lights. But, it should look and work wonderfully for the next few years.

Mark, Alan,
My steaming/deck light just self-destructed. Did the holes line up for this new unit versus the original Amel installed, or did you have to drill any new holes in the mast? Thanks Tim SM2K #306

Scott,
Michelle and I will be doing something similar in the near future. In addition, I would like to add the ability to turn on the mizzen light on command as well, upon return to the boat. We are looking at moving to a digital switch to perform both functions. With the digital switch we can use any marine light we want, and use a remote (key fob, garage door opener, etc) to carried with us on the dinghy. Simple tap into switched 12/24V, a little programming of the relay, and routing to device. I think it cleaner than dealing with motion sensors on a moving vessel. Matt

Re: Depth Sounder Replacement in a SM 2000

Chris,
All the major electronics brands use the Airmar sensors. All will work on your NMEA2K network. We elected for a DST810 sensor with the paddle wheel. Now Airmar has recently brought out the DX900 that is all ultrasonic. Seems like a cool piece of kit...lower maintenance for sure. However, I can't seem to find one in stock in the market, and the quoted prices are at least 2X the DST810. I am now questioning if I change to the DX900, or just have a spare DST810 (clean it in my own time after change). Either way you will have to replace the original thru hull with a larger unit. We opted for the bronze unit because I just don't like the idea of a plastic fitting as a critical component. Matt

I have three devices in the forward hallway floor hatch- all of them seem to be analog and designed to connect to the Hydra. 1) Some small temperature sensor transduces that is not hooked up. 2) A "small diameter" depth sounder (two wires pins 29,30 oh hydra) with a cable that has Airmar tranducer printed on it. 3) A "Larger diameter" Airmar ST850 device (Speed and Temp) (ST850-INS-BG P/N: 31-590-23-02) I "think" that the ST850 device is a P17 housing ( 51mm or 2") from searches. Proposed soluton- There is this device that seems like it could be fit for replacing the ST850 that has NMEA 2K Speed, Depth, and Temp. https://www.westmarine.com/buy/simrad--dst800-nmea-2000-thru-hull-traditional-transducer--12019311?recordNum=7 Am I correct that this would work? I am sure otherse here have done something simalar- I also think Brian for Delos may have for instance. Am I not thinking of something or have this all wrong? What have you done? Thank you !
