Notebooks - Another Approach

Ian Shepherd <g4ljf@...>

I have read with interest various methods of powering notebook computers. I have done this successfully, but through a different approach. Targus do a splendid line of accessories for those on the move with lap tops. They make a range of neat compact power supplies for most lap tops that will run from a DC input voltage from 2V to 24V. When you order, you chose the appropriate connector for your make of laptop. The appropriate web page is www.targus.com/accessories_power.asp and the price is US$119.99.

Although I have a 1300W inverter, apart from the dangers of having 220V near the cockpit opening whilst under way, it makes more sense not to waste unnecessary quiescent power on such a lean item as a laptop, so I bought the Targus. I fixed it with industrial Velcro under the computer shelf and connected it via a 'free type' cigar lighter socket that I wired via a fly lead to the 12V terminal box at the back of the nav desk. I wired the socket supply through a push pull switch mounted on the left hand vertical panel above the nav desk so that I could easily switch the Targus off when the computer was not in use. I chose the 12V terminal box rather than the 24V one to reduce the stress on the power supply, especially when the yachts batteries were being charged. The set up worked faultlessly and there was no RFI from the Targus unit, unlike some small inverters.

John Martin <jjmartin24@...>

Walter
Glad to hear from you and hope all finds you and your family well.

In regards to your electric bilge pump problem, my guess at the source of the problem is that anything that goes down any of the household drains is likely to be pumped out by the electric bilge pump. But I don't think the electric pump is designed well to pump debris, particles of food, etc. I think it's a good idea to minimize any particles that go down the drain. The rubber pump parts likely deteriorate over time with debris passing over them.

The Amel manual indicates its a good idea to use the hand bilge pump once a week to get debris out of the sump (also just to put regular use on the hand pump). The intake hose for the hand pump is directly on the sump bottom whereas the electric pump intake is about 5 inches from the bottom (to keep it out of the debris). If you don't regularly use the hand pump to clean out the stuff at the bottom, then it's possible that alot of stuff accumulates there. Another problem is if the electric pump is pumping at the same time you rinse off your dishes (pretty likely) then it will pick up the particles before they have time to settle to the bottom of the sump.

Regards
John Martin

[Amel Yacht Owners] Notebooks on board for SM electrical wireing

Amel fitted an 800 watt pure sine wave inverter 24>220 volts to Bali Hai
We use this for mains requirements when the gen set is off and there is no
shore power. This solves the forecabin computer power.
The 12 volt supply is ancient technology as fitted to Bali Hai SM319, as
the Sailor 24>12 volt converters are only glorified resistors to drop the
voltage by dissipating it into heat. I therefore fitted a modern power
supply unit behind the panel to the left of the radar and this gives me
ample 12 volts as needed ( it is always on ).I then connected a car battery
charger supplied by my laptop manufacturer to provide 18 volts to my laptop
on the chart table. I have a major phobia about having mains power on or
at the chart table as there is a remote possibility of sea water coming in
and making me another electrocution fatality.
Incidentally if you are getting an inverter is should be a pure sine wave
type and not a modified sine wave if you are going to use the power to
charge high quality electronic equipment. The modified sine wave fools the
voltage sensors in some battery chargers and damages the battery or the
charger. I used to wonder why my laptop and video batteries did not last.
It became obvious when the modified sine wave inverter I was using
overcharged a Bosch drill battery thus melting the plastic socket on the
unit.

The idea of fitting a wireless LAN sounds dangerous as the radio waves
could well screw up some or all of the boats electronics with disastrous
effect

Best wishes, John Hollamby

Hi Jim,
I still believe the basic problem is that the water above the flaps in the
bilge pump is leaking back so that there is no water on the flaps to weigh
them down. You could take the cover off the pump and look to see that the
flaps are closing properly and either way take them off and reverse them so
that they work properly. Of course a better solution would be to get a pair
of the improved flaps from the makers or from Amel. The complete set, two
flaps and a spare diaphram ( not needed ) cost me about US$ 45 in Malta
through a chandlery which had to gt them from Italy.

Try it, incidentally why pump the sump dry so often ? John

It is a good explanation, but I had never used the manual on switch

These are the little flapper valves inside the pump housing. The
problem is that the pump cycles normally, but moves no water. Mine
began to malfunction about 2 weeks after delivery. On disassembly by
the Amel agent in Lisbon they appeared to be perfectly normal, but
replacing them cured the problem, and has lasted 5 months now.
