Thank you.

My understanding is that the 55s do not have the additional twin Pullman bunk berths which for me is a negative. I have been more drawn to 54s but am overwhelmed by changes during production run having heard that initial furlers were so bad they needed to be replaced and Volvo engine woes. It is a pitty there is not a spreadsheet that details when Amel made the various changes and associated issues. This forum has really opened my eyes to so many issues.

FW: Comparing Amel Super Maramu to the Amel 54 & 55
amelforme
Hello Ms. Sloman and Mr. Harries. I wrote this not too long ago and although there are no graphs and polar charts, I think I can promise you that the information is accurate and fully representative of the sailing characteristics and some other information regarding these three Amel boats. The only incorrect information is regarding the development of the Amel 54. Jean Jacques was already the elected chairman of the shipyard, not being groomed for the position as I wrote. I regret the error. The changes from model to model were mainly upgrades and evolutionary changes. The quality of overall construction improved slightly as the newer models were introduced, mainly reflective of newer materials and improved construction techniques. I could probably address more specific questions, preferably by conversation. I’m dyslexic and typing is almost painful… I hope this is helpful. All the best, Joel

I would be interested as well and it would be even better if anybody could had some "hard data" to the discussion like stability curve and polar chart of her/his "preferred" model.

Re: Deck hatch dogs reinforcements
Thanks for pointing that out, Eric. Here's the photo in a different format. See if that works. Bill Rouse, those photos were a part of that thread discussion I was looking for. There was a stainless steel replacement part that someone either bought or had fabricated. I'm trying to run that down before I go out and have my own idea fabricated. -- Dave Kurtz SM2 #380 S/V Celtic Cross Detroit, Michigan

As a matter of contribution to the community which includes some SM owners I share below some pictures of the solution we're using. [Note] I like using it a a temporary shelf ;-)

Re: Portable freezer
We installed an Engel frig/freezer under the forward saloon seat (where the optional 2nd freezer is on some SMs) great for extra freezer space, but we mostly use it as a drinks frig. Bonus it runs from 12-24 VDC...wired it up to the already existing breaker for the 2nd freezer on the DC panel.

A55 - questions about design for resilience and differences from A54 & SMs
Julia Sloman
Greetings all
My husband and I are looking for a boat to complete a circumnavigation and are familiar with SMs having crewed on one extensively. While recognising that the primary function of this forum is for existing owners to share suggestions about your vessels, we would be very grateful if any of you are happy to share your thoughts with us about factors to consider with an A55 compared to a 54 or SM - sailing / comfort performance, layout, reliability, energy consumption, storage etc. The A55s that are within our budget are closer to the early end of the release so we would also be interested to learn about any major changes from the initial hulls.
One of the themes that is often quoted about Amels is that they have a much better level of resilience through manual overrides and availability of manual systems / less dependence on high tech solutions than other blue water cruising boats; can anyone give us some specific examples of these on an Amel 55? We are trying to understand whether it is that these systems come as standard on an Amel whereas they may only be options in other Bluewater cruisers (eg dual autopilots), or whether there are some elements of the Amel 55’s design for resilience that are very hard to replicate / instal later in another brand.
We can see that the majority of discussion on this forum is from SM and A54 owners - are many of the discussions also relevant to A55 owners, or has everything changed so much that lots of the discussions won’t apply in the case of an A55?
If there is a pre-existing thread on this topic (we couldn’t find one), please let us know! We have seen Chris Beeson’s A55 review on YouTube which was helpful. We are very happy to receive private replies instead of ones directed to you all if this forum is not the place for general discussion on this topic, or alternatively, we will trust the moderator to remove our post :-).
Many thanks for your thoughts!
Julia Sloman Hopefully soon-to-be Amel owner

I forgot to mention that I purchased a short piece of PVC pipe. I use the same piece of pipe to tighten the packing when I change it, and also install the lip seals in the C drive. Fair Winds Eric Kimberlite Amel Super Maramu #376

I didn’t want to confuse the group, but I have had a 5-ring stuffing box for years. The only modification that I made besides making the stuffing box taller is I made it wider. On my stuffing box there is an L shaped stainless-steel plate to hold the nut in place. While under way it is difficult to remove the two screws that hold the plate in place. By making the stuffing box in a wider diameter, and a longer L shaped plate I can easily remove the plate and tighten the nut a bit. Fair Winds Eric Kimberlite Amel Super Maramu #376

I think when you have a problem with the stuffing box, it is less likely to be the nut than the box itself. The spares you need are the packing material and this: take a stuffing box nut, wrap the threads in teflon tape, immerse it up to the top of the threads in a resin/hardener mix in a circular mold with the nut hole sealed, and voila- you have a 20 mm stuffing box penthouse to attach to the top of your stripped old stuffing box. Holds 5 rings of material and can be installed in the water (just don't take that last ring out). Three screws and 5200 work well to attach; just let it set before pounding down the material.

Somewhere on this forum I recall a couple of Amel owners posting information about some stainless steel reinforcements for the hatch dogs that seem to fracture like this one. I’ve searched on a couple of occasions and cannot find the thread. Does anyone recall who makes these parts?

Re: New LiFePO4 Batteries for Aquarius
Danny and Yvonne SIMMS
Hi JB, I have had a starting battery for each of the gen set and main engine in battery boxes at the rear of the engine room for 12 years. Replaced them once maybe 6 or 7 years ago. Ocean Pearl has an active life and has seldom been left sitting for long periods. I like the short cable run. Regards Danny SM 299 Ocean Pearl

Re: tb/AMEL 54 electric water pump/
Arno, I agree completely. I watched this video about 2 years ago. This video is a perfect example of what NOT to do and a perfect example of how to compare an Amel-designed system to another. Amel designs things that are difficult to operate incorrectly. I call this child-proof design. The complicated system shown in this video has the risk of many built-in possible operation issues and operator failures, like the failure to set a valve correctly or the failure of dozens of added parts. Obviously, the owner of the boat enjoys over-complicating things and enjoys tinkering with his boat and its systems. My comments are not to criticize him, but rather to use what he has done as an example of what not to do. Can you imagine if you just bought this boat from him? Would you completely understand the operation of what he has installed and the risks with setting a valve wrong and the risks with failure? I am sure that this is not the first thing he has modified. One-way valve installed before the seawater filter: Wow!!! More, also notice the flow sensor is orientated so that debris falls into the sensor This was probably an afterthought because it wasn't there when he first showed the completed project. He just added further complications and increased the risk of something going wrong. I urge all Amel owners to restrain themselves from this type of overcomplication. Especially because if you simply change the Onan impeller every 250 hours and do it correctly with an OEM impeller, you will not experience losing impeller parts into the heat exchanger. Also, the heat exchanger should probably be removed and completely cleaned every 1500 hours.
On Sat, Apr 17, 2021 at 3:54 AM Arno Luijten <arno.luijten@...> wrote: Nice video. However.... It passes very quickly over the main problem of this setup. The Marco pump is not self priming. He puts a non-return valve in the circuit that typically work quite poorly for raw sea-water. The system does not notify you if the waterflow needs priming so that can be quite annoying as well.
