I negotiated an Amel Owners Yacht School discount for my clients. It is significant. Every one of my clients that have bought from Gn Espace seems to really like the product. I actually think that they are the best and since ENO was acquired, I am not sure that there is any other choice at any price that provides you with reasonable quality. Frankly, I am surprised that Amel has not moved to GN Espace. It is not only about electric/conductive solutions it is about quality and engineering. You should also check out how the stove and the containers that GN Espace have been engineered.

If you are referring to induction OceanChef3 I'm interested.

Here is quote I got 3 days ago: The cost of our OceanChef 3 zone gimbaled Induction model (with a glass door) is: £3995.83 excluding VAT and the current lead time on this model is 3- 4 weeks from order confirmation payment

Shipment is extra cost.

I asked confirmation is quoted price is before or after Yacht School Clients discount but no answer yet.

Companionway hatch removal

I've heard much discussion about renewing the vertical  companionway hatch.  The veneer on the hatch takes a beating from sun and rain. I've seen several boats that had their doors sanded and new veneer applied. The new veneer surface is less than 1/32nd thick and cannot be sanded.  It is an easy process.  A one day DIY project and shouldn't cost more than $100.00 US. (Woodworkers are charging much more)

A better solution - I  cut the door horizontally, in the middle,  reattached the pieces with a piano  hinge, added a gasket between the two halves, replaced the sweep and viola! I can now remove the hatch in less than 5 minutes. (See the results on the attached photos.) Cost was about $100.00 US including the hinge, sweep and varnish.   I have a full set of pictures of the process if anyone is interested

Personally, I think double braided dyneema (with polyester core) in this application is a mistake.

4mm Single braid (uncovered) dyneema has almost TWICE the strength as 4mm double braid (dyneema core with polyester cover). Further, with double-core, I am unable to reliably form an eye splice with a tucked cover. If I was concerned about chafe, I would rather have dyneema exposed than a polyester cover.  

Also, I don't think you should rely on the lifting lines to hold your dinghy. I only use it to lift and then use ratchet straps to secure the dinghy.

Herman,

That area behind the B&G analog devices or chain counter is accessible by opening the sliding panel in the ceiling above the galley sink. Inside that panel, you will see 2 or 3 conduits that lead to the Nav Station. Amel left a pull-string inside the conduit and it is there unless someone has removed it.

You can use a cable gland, or there is another solution for the cable which I used. 
My solution: When not in use my cockpit monitor laid face down at the Nav Station with the cable coiled on top. When in use, we brought the monitor and cable through the companionway hatch. No holes to drill. I initially did it this way because I was not certain of the final location of the monitor. Since I also resist drilling holes of any kind, and because this worked so well, it became the permanent solution for me. If I were you, I would try my solution at least temporarily.

8+ Liters in the C-Drive. Buy 9 because you need 0.3 liters for the bow thruster. the following is a part of the original Amel maintenance schedule. The red-colored note and the photo of a container of 80/90 oil I added.

I refused to pay any more money to Simpson so I just changed the wires without any modifications to the davits themselves. No problems so far and I wish I did it far earlier. 

When I had them changed, I didn't know how to splice a metal eye into uncovered dyneema and well, I had other things to get done, so I just paid someone to buy and make the lines for me. That said, it's really not that hard to splice an eye on uncovered dyneema. The end that attaches inside the davit has a regular spliced eye and the other end, the other end has a metal thimble to prevent chafe and strengthen the eye. I believe I used 5 meter lines. Very useful when I'm on the hard and wanted to raise big items up. :)

About the weights, I left the big weight on starboard side and the port side, I put a much smaller weight. Agree with Thomas that the big weight is another thing to worry about as it has hit me on the head once or twice. :) But I do think a smaller weight is useful as it helps when you have the lines fully wound up (eg- when you store dinghy on deck for passage) and then need to lower them. Not sure the weight of the lines alone will allow for easy lowering and winding onto the spool.

But yes, get rid of the heavy weight.

Either will work. 

Amel changed the spec from 10-40 to 80-90 gear oil about 6 or 7 years ago. I found out about it when we were in Martinique from Amel Martinique.

Logically, it should have been gear oil from the beginning because it is all gears just like the bow thruster lower unit or the lower unit on an outboard engine.
